Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

My weight seems to have stablised at a new low of 10.00 1/4, which I’m very pleased with, but I’m still trying to get down to about 9.10. Going for a mini today as playing tennis, and will be going out for dinner tomorrow, so I want a bit of a calorie deficit beforehand 😊

Sorry to hear you are feeling stressed, @harriethoyle . I’ve been rather the same lately, worrying about something I really shouldn’t be fretting about. I gave myself a good talking to yesterday and also did something practical about the problem, and I feel much better today. Totally agree about balance and routine when other aspects of life seem out of control.

harriethoyle · 07/07/2025 11:02

Morning all! Happy Monday.

Thanks @TeaRose29 I'm still chugging on, trying for a bit of routine and stability. Gym was derailed yesterday by a horrendous traffic jam so I stomped the dog uphill and down dale instead and felt much better for it.

I have a funny week with two work socials (usually we have none!) and friends staying from Thursday so I am aiming for consistent gym attendance and minis tomorrow and Wednesday. Damage limitation is the name of the game!

Hello all! Anyone fasting today?

moving was indeed tortuous @harriethoyle. Eurgh, I’m never doing that again or if I do, I’m paying someone to do all of it. Still unpacking, but love my new home :)

im pleased that I didn’t gain weight having had a week off. I super over indulged the day before moving including a burger and beer (AF) in the pub. And again on the day with a later dinner. I did a bit of damage control with calorie counting and not eating if I wasn’t hungry which seems to have worked.

back on it today, though. The DH forgot and is trying to get me to move it until tomorrow. No way!

SmellyMe · 08/07/2025 06:56

Yesterday = FAIL

Got talked into trying a local restaurant and caved. It was sooo yummy! I had only had around 200 calories before dinner, ie between 7am to 7pm so I don’t feel like I can face that again today. Back to backs are not something I’m capable of. I wonder if I might just try standard calorie counting this week as I’ve got a busy work week, away for the weekend, and still lots to sort out for the house.

Formel · 08/07/2025 09:13

I've had a week off but back to it this week. My problem is I've got no willpower when I'm socialising - I think partly due to my upbringing, I can mentally hear my entire extended family condemning the idea that I might have a side salad and a glass of water at a restaurant while everyone else has a proper meal as "attention seeking" (the worst of the deadly sins in their book!)

harriethoyle · 09/07/2025 08:40

Try aiming for a couple of minis @SmellyMe - that’s what I do when things are manic.
@Formel i find socialising impossible to combine with FD too! I tend to do treat that day as an intermittent fast so skip breakfast and a minimal lunch if I’ve got supper out planned.

I’m fasting today - done pt this morning so it’ll be a slightly higher FD than usual but aiming to come in around 650 or so 🤞🏼

Kitchen closing on 618. Happy with that!

Morning all - what's the week looking for you? I am FD tomorrow, and a mini on Wednesday (PT) and Thursday (houseguest). Have had a VERY boozy long weekend with dear friends and I am totally shattered - we are going to a party on Saturday and I am tempted to be the designated driver so I can have an excuse not to drink!!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 15/07/2025 19:27

Kitchen closing on 709 today and tempted to try for a loose b2b tomorrow. PT done tonight and designated driver committed to for Saturday!

TeaRose29 · 16/07/2025 10:06

I’ve had 2 very physically demanding days and am feeling a bit depleted, so planning a “normal” high protein day today, and may do a mini tomorrow.

Bufftailed · 16/07/2025 12:08

If I can hop in and join. BMI 28, heaviest ever. Want to start 5.2 and get back to normal BMI. Any tips for starting? Am veggie. Do you eat most in the morning? Go for days when you are more active or others? Would appreciate advice.

harriethoyle · 16/07/2025 18:19

Kitchen closing 1068 which makes 1575 for the last two days. Happy enough with that with two sessions of PT on top.

It’s amazing how a couple of days of sobriety and virtuous eating and exercise can restore you!

Sounds very sensible @TeaRose29 i find PT the day after a restricted day harder than PT on the day itself!

welcome @Bufftailed come and join in. I tend to push through to lunch and then eat about 1/3 cals then 2/3 at dinner. It helps me sleep better! I always fast when I’m in the office. It’s impossible on a WFH day in my experience 🤣

I am back in. Had a few weeks off due to various things and paid the price. Want to get back into some kind of shape before my holidays. Did my two fast days, but also was more careful during the week, cutting down on processed food and had got into a bad habit of a cup of tea and a biscuit in the evening, which then crept up to two or three biscuits and a piece of chocolate!
Had a good loss which I am pleased with as a boost.
Hope everyone having a good week and good luck.

harriethoyle · 17/07/2025 10:57

@Lucylurker I got into the mid-morning biscuit at work habit and have knocked that on the head!! It's amazing how quickly bad habits take root and how slowly good ones take to embed...!!

Can I join you all please?
a bit of background; I’m 58, lost a couple of stone a few years ago by 16:8 and upping the exercise.
over the last 18 months I’ve put on a stone and a half due to menopause issues and self medication with daily wine!
im now on HRT for two months and feel so much better so I now have the energy and enthusiasm to start again.
i have been moderating the alcohol since mid June, although fell off the wagon as been on holiday for the past fortnight.

i have 15 pounds to loose to get to a normal BMI, but would love to loose a further 7 pounds .

I need 1625 to maintain and 1300 to loose

not quite sure how to measure the calories accurately though ?

I will be exercising more consistently, I run and do yoga. I have been reading about the need to do resistance exercises to increase muscle mass so will investigate hand weights and YouTube classes .

have a food Delivery on Sunday and before then am eating up what’s in freezer so will start with 16:8
got a big “do” on Saturday night but am planing on driving so no alcohol!

Lucylurker · 17/07/2025 15:43

You sound very similar to me Sonnet, I am trying to up my strength training as well, I used to do a Pilates and a body sculpting class but have let that go for a while now but am going back next week. I can see my strength deteriorating as I get older and don’t start me with the bloody menopause. So welcome and good luck.

harriethoyle · 17/07/2025 16:52

Welcome @Sonnet - I use MyFitnessPal to track my calories and it’s pretty user friendly. Download the app and have a go. Good work limiting the booze too - it’s not only empty calories but it depresses your metabolism too. Shame it’s so delicious 🤣

I think today might be a fast day given I’ve succumbed to a stomach bug 🤢

harriethoyle · 18/07/2025 08:45

Get well soon @Sonnet

TeaRose29 · 18/07/2025 08:52

Hello @Sonnet and @Lucylurker ! I am very into strength training (and so is @harriethoyle ) and I lift weights at least 3 times a week, both in the gym and at home. It’s a game changer.

I was derailed yesterday by DH going for a walk and coming back with croissants (men can be such saboteurs 🤣). So going for a high protein mini today. Working this morning then going to play tennis, and will probably relax and watch the golf this evening 😊🏌️‍♂️

harriethoyle · 18/07/2025 09:01

Yes I agree @TeaRose29 - I’ve lost kilos through lifting heavy things and doing minimal cardio. And I love how strong it makes me feel!!

OP posts:
Lucylurker · 18/07/2025 10:23

Thats so good to know @harriethoyle and @TeaRose29 . I need some inspection. I was doing some arm exercises with weights but got disheartened so any advice would be very welcome.

harriethoyle · 18/07/2025 12:02

I joined a gym and signed up for 12 week programme with PT and classes @Lucylurker - it was expensive but I thought of it as investment in my middle years and I am so thrilled I've done it. I now lift 3 - 4 a week at classes and have PT once a week. It's made a hugely positive difference to my mental health as well.
