Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Failed to fast last week due to my period! But managed 3 mini fasts. Today I've done my fast. Kitchen closed at 581. Well done to all who fasted today 💪 💪 💪

harriethoyle · 13/05/2025 20:25

Well done @Hdjdb42 - back in the game!

kitchen closing here on 759 to make 1402 for my impromptu b2b complete with PT session this morning. Happy with that!

Last week was physically and emotionally challenging for various reasons, with no possibility of FDs. This week things are back to normal, thankfully. I did a big weights session on Monday and played tennis for 2 hours yesterday, so couldn’t fast but was sensible. Going for either a proper FD or a mini today, I’ll see how it pans out. Planning homemade burgers and salad for dinner.

My weight went back up by one pound to 10.2 1/2 (which was fine considering last week) and is resolutely stuck there. However, I’ve really been hitting the weights lately, so perhaps there is some body re-comp going on. My stomach feels flatter, and my biceps are looking bigger 💪🤣.

Well done @harriethoyle and @Hdjdb42 ! Anyone else fasting today?

aberjenagain · 14/05/2025 18:40

Evening all! FD-ish here, not sure on calories, but I’ve only had miso for lunch and leftover lasagne for tea. I’ve also not had leftover birthday cake on several occasions today - looking forward to that tomorrow 😁It’s been a chaotic week with 2 birthdays, dodging a stomach bug that everyone else in the house has had (I’m still not safe, last one had it last night), and an insane work week culminating in travel this weekend (hence especially desperate not to get the stomach bug 😬) Very much looking forward to normality resuming next week!

TeaRose29 · 15/05/2025 09:44

Wow-eee! Just weighed myself (weigh every day - controversial I know 🤣) and I’ve had a “whoosh” - 2 pounds off overnight, so I am now 10.0 1/2, the lowest I’ve been for months. Yesterday was a mini BTW.

I’m going on holiday in 2 weeks time, so I’m very motivated to carry on. I set myself a target - complete with spreadsheet 😊 - of 7 pounds in 7 weeks, so if I can shift 2 more pounds, I’ll hit it.

Think I will try for another mini today. I seem to find 3 or 4 of these a week more effective than a proper FD, which I struggle with, especially as I do a lot of exercise. Anyone with me today?

Well done on avoiding birthday cake several times @aberjenagain 😊. The beauty of this WOE is that you can have a chaotic week and then jump back on without feeling like a failure.

aberjenagain · 15/05/2025 10:31

@TeaRose29 i had cake for breakfast today 😁Congrats on the whoosh!

harriethoyle · 15/05/2025 10:41

Fabulous @TeaRose29 ! I am also a weigh every dayer - I find it far less triggering than once or twice a week.

I'm on for a mini today and did a mini yesterday. A tantalising 0.3kg from my lowest weight ever so am hopeful I might get there next week with a bit of discipline! Out tomorrow night and Saturday lunch with friends though so doubt very much it will happen this week.

Checking back in after a FD. Good to hear everyone's news.

Found FD easy today. I just had a boiled egg for lunch and with 3 cups of tea and lots of herbal teas that saw me through to 8pm. FIL unexpectedly came for tea so I had to eat with everyone, but it was a chickpea bake with filo pastry, boiled potatoes with butter and mint and green beans. I give DH all but two of my potatoes and enjoyed the filo. Don't think it did too much damage.

I'm interested to know how I sleep tonight. I've slept really badly after FDs (hungry I think) but hopefully I'm getting used to them now at the end of week 3.

CrazyCatMam · 16/05/2025 00:16

Jumping back in after a looooong absence.

DH’s birthday in 4 weeks.

I have been slacking - start, stop, half attempts…

Tomorrow will be a successful FD!

CheshireSplat · 18/05/2025 21:24

4 weeks is a good time to focus, @CrazyCatMam .

I'm starting week 4 tomorrow and I am really looking forward to my FD tomorrow. Feeling uncomfortably full after 3 days of lots of food.

SmellyMe · 18/05/2025 21:51

well done everyone on your hard work! Urgh, I did not register a loss last week and I thought I was pretty good. That was before I went out to my indulgent do on Friday. Back to the grind tomorrow. I’m on to week 7. I’m yet to overcome my sabotage/hurdle weight. Fingers crossed for progress this week. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼 good luck to everyone else on FD on Monday :)

harriethoyle · 18/05/2025 22:10

I’m joining you tomorrow @CheshireSplat @SmellyMe - had a new low on the scales yesterday then spent the day and night feasting lavishly so it’s gone again 😆 this week is crazy with work events so all I’m committing to is one true FD tomorrow and then damage limitation and gym when I can squeeze it in…

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 19/05/2025 07:41

Didn’t lose last week (for the first time), and have had a bit of a sod it all weekend. Also finding the allure of a cold alcoholic beverage very difficult in the sunshine and that a) destroys my willpower and b) makes me feel bad.
Hoping for a more virtuous week. Back today for a FD. Am out tonight unhelpfully so can’t crawl into bed early but think I’ll be OK. Good luck everyone else fasting.

TeaRose29 · 19/05/2025 09:44

I went back up by one pound after my whoosh, which isn’t surprising, and after a few days of “sensible” eating I am holding steady at 10.1 1/2, which I am really pleased with. Today I’m going for a protein based mini, as I’ve got my PT this afternoon, and am also planning on some gardening. So the menu is:

B = collagen coffee
L = protein shake
D = homemade sort of bouillabaisse

I’m also getting close to a NSV. Tried on some much loved jeans yesterday, and while they were too tight for comfort, they did fit and I could do them up!

Good luck to everyone fasting today! 💪💪

harriethoyle · 19/05/2025 09:58

Same same @eekwhatnow - we taste tested four different rose wines in the sun on Saturday (we had friends round not just me and DH!) and each one became progressively more delicious! 😂

Stuck within NFD calories yesterday and did the gym and my steps so I've taken a pound of bloat off overnight which is good. Just hoping this week won't be too much of a bin fire...!

OP posts:
CheshireSplat · 19/05/2025 22:51

Off to bed. 553. Didn't find it easy but wasn't particularly tempted to give up either so that's a result.

SmellyMe · 20/05/2025 06:58

Snap @CheshireSplat!

harriethoyle · 20/05/2025 08:25

Kitchen closed last night on 728 and aiming for something similar today with a PT session. Scales were kind this morning so that’s motivating!

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 20/05/2025 08:37

My MyFitnessPal says 353 for yesterday but I then had a gin and tonic at the pub. Will try and come in a bit under on today’s NFD to make up for it. Next FD tomorrow.
This was all a bit easier in winter when I never went out in the evenings and was in bed with my book every night at 8 😃. But still keeping on keeping on and hope it gets me somewhere eventually!

TeaRose29 · 20/05/2025 09:25

I felt really hungry yesterday so some extra calories crept in and I am 1/2 pound up this morning ☹️ in spite of gym session, although apparently weight can often be up after excercise, due to muscles holding on to water, so not too bothered about this. I have a very busy day today including two tennis sessions, so will be eating on the run, and I’m playing cards tonight, which always includes a cold drink or two 😊. So, planning FDs on Wednesday on Thursday.

Well done @harriethoyle , @SmellyMe , @CheshireSplat and @eekwhatnow. BTW eek, there aren’t many calories in a G&T 😊.

Darker · 20/05/2025 09:43

I’m on a break for a couple of weeks because I’ve been celebrating a big birthday and there has been a lot of food and drink with more to come. I really can’t face the scales until I’ve been able to get back into the routine of some fast days. 😬

harriethoyle · 20/05/2025 09:54

Personally @Darker I get on the scales straight away after holiday/extended feasting etc - it's always horrifying but then a couple of FD usually takes a big whack off which I find very motivating!

OP posts:
Darker · 20/05/2025 10:11

I know what you mean but there is a big Italian feast coming up and no opportunity to fast before then so I am just going to ignore everything until my head is in a leaner place.

I am exercising, which is something!

harriethoyle · 20/05/2025 20:23

Kitchen closing on 795 which makes 1550 for the b2b and a PT session done tonight. I’ll take that!

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 21/05/2025 08:31

Well done @harriethoyleand thanks for the reassurance on the GnT@TeaRose29!
Checking in for FD2. It’s chilly and rainy, working all day so I’ll be busy, and the kids have no clubs so I can crawl into bed early. I think the stage is set for a good FD. No excuses!
