Who wants to start intermittent fasting?

I'm no expert but I have been doing Intermittent Fasting (IF) since September and I've lost 9kg/ a stone.

I eat breakfast at 7:30, lunch and the tea at 4. So my eating window is finished by 4:30pm. So it's a 9 hour eating window and 15 hours of fasting.

I haven't read any books about it but I do listen to podcasts about it.

I don't know anyone in real life who does IF so thought there would be a community here.

Didn't bother weighing on Monday as it was entirely the wrong time of the month (which also led to too much chocolate this week), but stuck to fasting including throwing in one 22 hour fast this week, and jumped on the scales today. 2lb down, so down to 10.9 so I'm happy with that.

I'm trying to take a fairly relaxed and flexible approach, as I want to stick with it for a while.

HairScratcher · 20/01/2024 09:20

Did a 24hr fast yesterday for the first time and it was fine! Have a weekend away next week though so will be back to 10-8 eating for 3 days

pippablackwell · 20/01/2024 11:04

Congratulations to all those who’ve lost weight!

@cosypompoms I broke my fast with vegetable soup. Then in the evening I had takeaway pizza with a friend! I’m trying to keep my fast up until midday today, because mine and my friend’s main hobby when we’re together seems to be snacking 😂

NewYearNewYu · 20/01/2024 11:50

Well done everyone losing weight and those still here doing their best.
@HairScratcher if it’s any consolation when I’ve lost weight fasting in the past, I haven’t gained weight when I’ve been on holiday and widened my eating window. I don’t think fasting screws with your metabolism in the way other diets do.

HairScratcher · 20/01/2024 12:15

I think my biggest problem is quantity as we have already planned the delights for breakfast, lunch and dinner!!

cosypompoms · 20/01/2024 14:59

@NadjasNightclub good idea. I don't like weighing when it's my period but also I like to understand what it does to my weight.

@HairScratcher well done on the 24 fast. What did you break your fast with? Also did you have black coffee? I usually do.
Also I have three meals a day in my fasting window and still lose weight.

No loss or gain this week but I think that’s normal as the habits embed

BranchGold · 22/01/2024 10:19

Morning everyone, hoping to rejoin the fasting after a year off where I definitely over indulged in wine and carbs!
Im hoping to lose two stone (2 and a half really!) and maintain it. Fasting with a lower carb approach really works for me, I find carbs are so triggering in giving me hunger swings and cravings for more salty/sweet snacks that I give in to, so having the structure of an eating window and being mindful of my meals within that works best for me.

Had a litre of water so far this morning and on a black coffee now. I’m aiming to do 2pm to 8pm as my non fast window, so we’ll see how that goes.

pippablackwell · 22/01/2024 10:47

Morning everyone. I managed to stick to the fasting windows I wanted to this weekend, which is a good thing. I ate way too after though, so my blood sugar probably didn’t get a break. It’s interesting that the foods which I’m really drawn to when I’m with my friend, I didn’t actually enjoy that much when I was eating it.

PrincessPotato · 22/01/2024 11:06

Hi all - joining this. I want to lose about 10lbs and keep it off so my old clothes fit properly again - also just booked a holiday in July/Aug to plan for. I try to stick to 1pm - 8pm eating window; however my work is incredibly busy (I’m right on the coalface) and sometimes I will genuinely not find a minute to eat until maybe 5pm.

This is not a good thing - I’ll get home, sit down and eat my way through alll the junk, then not eat much of nutritional value for supper. Thankfully I only work 3 days a week. Trying to eat more filling nutritious things this week and less crisps/chocolate. Currently on day 3 of my cycle so bloating/cravings will hopefully abate soon!

For 1pm today - either eat the Bol Spanish stew I have in the fridge, or make broccoli and cheese soup inspired by someone I think further up this thread.

cosypompoms · 22/01/2024 13:06

@HairScratcher staying the same can be frustrating but it's better than a gain for sure!

@BranchGold @PrincessPotato

welcome to the thread! I live on soup for lunches as they just live in my freezer so feel very convenient

PrincessPotato · 22/01/2024 13:52

@BranchGold thanks 😊! I’ve actually gone for broccoli and salmon instead (just finishing off in the oven) so I can have kimchi on the side - gut health is also an area of focus this year.

NatureGlimmers · 22/01/2024 15:28

Well done everyone and welcome to those who are starting out. I weighed in last week and lost another 700g/1.5lbs so I'm very pleased. Not expecting this week to be very good though as I went away this weekend, hosted by someone else, and had no control over the food so I will no doubt have reversed a bit of progress. Managed to at least skip breakfast so got in 12-15 hours of fasting each day.

cosypompoms · 22/01/2024 15:38

@NatureGlimmers you never know you may be pleasantly surprised. What day do you weigh?

OP posts:
NewYearNewYu · 22/01/2024 15:55

@NatureGlimmers well done on the loss, focus on that and getting back on track, we all need a break sometimes, that is normal life. I also had a bad weekend but hoping to have reversed it by the Friday weigh in.

NatureGlimmers · 22/01/2024 21:45

@NewYearNewYu totally agree, and I sometimes think it helps to boost your metabolism by having the occasional crazy weekend!

@cosypompoms I do the Gin Stephens recommended method of weighing daily and taking a 7 day average of Monday to Sunday. So last week I could only take 5 data points as I was away Sat & Sun without a scale. I used to always weigh weekly on a Wednesday but because I try to intuitively eat and honour any hunger signals (within the eating window) I have found this method easier for me psychologically because it stops me from thinking things that go against intuitive eating like "I'm weighing in tomorrow so I'll eat less today" etc

cosypompoms · 23/01/2024 21:28

@NatureGlimmers that's really interesting. I've never heard of that method

OP posts:
cosypompoms · 25/01/2024 20:33

Anyone still fasting? I'm weighing tomorrow and I always dread it. I've fasted all week but I feel a bit bloated so think maybe I've eaten a fair bit of white bread!

OP posts:
MrsPositivity1 · 25/01/2024 20:36

@cosypompoms me!! Middle of my 2nd week. Forgot to weigh myself at the start 🙄

NatureGlimmers · 25/01/2024 20:41

Me. Had a few days of eating too many refined carbs because I was stress eating, but kept to 18:6. Definitely noticed the fast is harder on refined carbs. Today I went back to eating a mostly whole food plant based diet so I will note with interest whether I find fasting easier tomorrow. Good luck with the weigh in @cosypompoms !

cosypompoms · 25/01/2024 20:43

@NatureGlimmers I had some
Gorgeous loaves of tiger bread given to me and it's been irresistible with soup

OP posts:
NatureGlimmers · 25/01/2024 21:08

Mmmm I love tiger bread. Paired with some salted butter, bowl of soup and a big bag of crisps. Totally addictive.

AuntieJoyce · 25/01/2024 21:33

Weighing tomorrow. I’ve definitely had a reset. I had some lunch at 12 and then I barely thought about food till 7 when hen I got home.
