I’m sure many of you have listened to this, but I still wanted to share. It was really great to listen to… I particularly found the bits about hormones and the menstrual cycle really interesting

I'm 20 minutes in and will listen more on my commute to work tomorrow.

Sounds like she has lots of suggestions that I so need to make and it sounds like it may help me out of perimenopausal hell.

I had to listen in instalments too. It’s pretty long!

She talks about peri and meno.

What I never understood with Mindy Pelz is what calories she proposes or if it is a long term or reset diet.

In her book she suggests for the follicular phase - 50g carb and 75g protein and fats as desired. To make up 1600 calories which is probably as low as would be sustainable you would need 120g of fat, which is more than the 70g max recommended on the NHS and might lead to high cholesterol? Or you could stick to 70g fat which makes this a 1,130 calorie diet.

I followed her diet for a month and I had a very light period, it was barely there then gone. I also felt a bit light headed and high in my follicular phase. It's fine for a month reset and maybe up to 12 weeks max if you need to lose a lot of weight.

But like many diets it doesn't address the underlying problem (which is loss of muscle mass in my opinion).

I haven’t read any of her books, or even heard of her before this podcast but I did find her very interesting and seemingly knowledgable. Although I also questioned her take on calories. She said that each person has a calorie set, which can change depending on diet or lifestyle. To be honest I don’t really understand the calorie counting. I listened to glucose goddess and she explained how calories were first counted. Once you know, you kinda think calorie counting is bollocks.

She explained it like a book. Two books are 500 pages long but they both have different content and offer different outcomes or feelings. The same goes for food and calories… an avocado and a cookie for example.

Back to M Petlz, she does explain the 5 different types of fasting in the podcast. Some for reset and others for long term.

I currently fast 18:6 but will add in a monthly 36:12 as a reset for injury prevention. I haven’t done it yet so I’m still sceptical about whether it does actually help with injury.
