Alternative day fasting for health reasons

LonelyFlans · 17/09/2023 18:26

I've been doing alternate day fasting for just over two weeks.

Im very overweight, but more importantly I have diabetes, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and fatty liver.

I have literally tried everything else out there but nothing has worked for me, including fast 800, low carb etc.

I haven't weighed myself (I tend to go by how clothes feel rather than the scales) but have found that:

  • my average resting heart rate is 10 points lower than it was 2 weeks ago
  • my blood pressure is down 15 points (top number) and 8 points (bottom number)
  • I've more than halved the amount of insulin I need and my blood sugars have stayed in range most of the day

I'm struggling to believe it!

I'm hoping that this is addressing inflammation in my system and resetting some of my health problems. Once things are reduced/stable I'll tweak things to get back to "normal" eating times.

Thought I'd post this in case other people are struggling the way I have.

You posted a long time ago @LonelyFlans but I didn't want to read and run.... This is SO IMPRESSIVE. Huge congrats.

As a fellow IF, I believe it is a way of life that we adapt as we go and am deeply inspired by your health benefits. I've had some but not as dramatic as yours.

How is it going now? What have you seen since September? Would be great to know and to know how you are adapting it 4 months later

I know this is an old thread, but I do am doing ‘proper’ ADF. Six weeks in, 16lb down with 33 to go! I feel ace on it, 36 hou fasts with a 12 hour eating window. It’s utterly cured my snack/choc/crisp addiction!

Tootyfilou · 13/04/2024 00:39

@RipleyGreen That's impressive! can I ask how many calories you eat on your non fast day? Do you restrict carbs?

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 13/04/2024 00:42

I’m also fascinated to know what you eat on your fasting day - this sounds amazing!

Monkeyfloor · 13/04/2024 00:46

Also very curious about 12 hrs in 48.
what do you find works best @RipleyGreen in terms of timings? When do you schedule that 12hr eating window?

I’m so sorry to not have replied. I’m a bit of an idiot on this forum, and have no notifications et al set up. I ate nothing on my fast day, and did not calorie count on my eating day, though I was mindful. I limited refined carbs as I have a big problem with them, akin to an alcoholic having a glass of wine. All is well and then suddenly I’m surrounded by empty crisp packets and Haagen Dazs tubs…I would stop eating at 19:00 on a Monday say, and then resume eating from 07:00 (or later) on Wednesday. I would just repeat the pattern, so true alternate days. Unfortunately tho I caught a bug, fell off the wagon and a month later I’m still not back on it. I’ve kept the weight off tho, and am wondering about modifying it with 500 per day instead, as taking supplements and working out electrolytes et al is a nuisance.

RipleyGreen · 30/05/2024 08:54

I reckon I ate 2000ish a day. I initially thought 1800, but we all underestimate, so I’ll go with 2000.

bloodyeffinnora · 30/05/2024 12:41

what do you drink on a fasting day, is it just water or do you have tea/coffee?

RipleyGreen · 30/05/2024 13:15

Pots and pots of green tea! Water. No diet drinks, tho I never drink sodas or the like anyway.
