Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

What’s going to have the biggest impact - no booze or 16:8?

If I only do one or the other for a fortnight?

I would say booze, but it depends. How much/what are you drinking, and do you eat when you're tipsy.

If it's a couple of vodkas and soda three times a week and no munchies, 16:8.

Youngatheart00 · 25/05/2021 00:34

It’s wine. I’m a terrible wine fiend. I can easily drink a bottle in a sitting or close to it. I reckon I probably drink 4 bottles a week (which I know isn’t good, let alone the calories).

I don’t tend to snack much with the booze but the wine is calories enough

If I did the fasting plan I wouldn’t eat or drink past 8pm which would naturally limit my drinking to a couple of glasses...but might that in itself be enough to wipe out the rest of the days efforts?

BMI is 31 so I need to do something after a very tough year where food and booze has been the only pleasure. Im not necessarily looking for a quick fix but just to feel healthier and better about myself.

If you do the 16:8, you won't be drinking much booze anyway! Unless you drink during the day Smile

Youngatheart00 · 25/05/2021 00:36

That’s the thinking @LovelyGirlCompetition and no I don’t drink during the day - maybe I would have a couple with a Sunday lunch but that’s it.

I can’t bear calorie counting as I feel it drives me towards processed foods which have the calories marked

Cut the booze first

LovelyGirlCompetition · 25/05/2021 00:42

I have been doing the 16:8 for a few weeks now, and I feel so much better. Not calorie counting at all, but just trying to retrain myself to eat less junk. I don't generally drink, but chocolate buttons were my alcohol! Go for it.

Youngatheart00 · 25/05/2021 00:43

Thanks all. I think I can do both then, reduce alcohol but not deny myself and make sure I have more alcohol free days than drinking days. Should I do the fasting every day or give myself a couple of ‘normal’ ones (might have to make them 2 of my booze free days though so I don’t waste all the hard work....)

I am doing it every day. Just works for me. If I had days off, I think it would be a slippery slope! Besides, after a few days of not eating on an evening, I felt so much better. More comfortable in bed and sleeping better. I don't know about you, and how you will cope without the alcohol if you are usually drinking a lot.

starsinyourpies · 25/05/2021 13:10

I am doing 16:8 and just eating sensibly rather than calorie counting, much easier for me. I don't drink though so not very helpful for you!

Youngatheart00 · 25/05/2021 18:02

I wish I didn’t drink! The wasted calories are horrific! I have come to realise I drink out of boredom and habit rather than anything else. I think a period away from the booze would do me the world of good (not least my waistline).

Thanks for sharing your experiences all x

Yes, cut the booze first Op. The discipline that comes from doing that will ease you gently into the 16:8.
