Combining fasting with low carb 1

StuntNun · 07/02/2021 14:21

This thread is for people who want to combine fasting with a low carbohydrate way of eating such as Low Carb Bootcamp, keto, paleo or primal.

Disclaimer – I am not a health professional – I am relying on my own reading and experience. If you have a relevant health condition then consult your doctor before introducing fasting. For example, people with diabetes or high blood pressure often require medication adjustments if they cut carbs or start fasting. In many conditions, medications must be taken with food which may dictate one or more regular meals per day. If you have had an eating disorder, or tend to be obsessive or controlling about food, then fasting may not be appropriate for you. I’m happy to chat about any of these issues but this thread is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Why fast?

  1. To lose weight
  2. For the health benefits (e.g. reducing insulin resistance, triggering cellular repair, lowering inflammation, reducing blood pressure)
  3. All of the above!

Types of fasting

  1. Intermittent fasting (for example 16:8)
  2. Fasting mimicking diet (such as 5:2)
  3. Extended fasting (over 24 hours)

I will describe each of these over the next three posts. Most people start out with, or working towards, either 16:8 or 5:2. Before we get started, my top fasting tip is to make sure you have plenty of calorie-free drinks: water, black coffee or tea, green tea or herbal teas. You may need to drink more than usual because you aren’t getting any water from food during your fasting window.

I'm just the same Stunt, it's the boredom of not eating rather than the hunger that gets to me when I go past about 40 hours.

LittlePearl · 09/08/2021 19:27

loveyouradvice I'm old Grin - late fifties.

I'd like to lose about 10k (from today's weight) but not sure that's achievable / maintainable. My BMI is 25 so I'm not massively overweight, but so much happier when I'm about 5k less than current weight.

loveyouradvice · 09/08/2021 22:21

littlepearl feeling just a little, dare I say it, jealous.... THAT IS SUCH AN AMAZING RESULT - 4kg in one week when you've a BMI of 25 and are in your 50s!!! Wow.....

I'm sure you'll get the next 5k off ... though perhaps a tad slower!

I'm fascinated to see whether my body reacts differently with these longer fasts. I am so hoping it is an easier way to lose weight

And loving the extra benefits that Stunt is getting... I can definitely see this becoming a way of life

Keep us updated Stunt ... you're 26 or so hours in so that's a great start....

LittlePearl · 09/08/2021 22:41

Yeah, I must admit I was very (pleasantly) surprised myself.

I'm expecting it to slow right down this week, but it's got me off to a good start and reminded me that I really can do it when I put my mind to it.

StuntNun · 10/08/2021 07:35

I'm 37 hours in right now and feeling good.

Well done Stunt.

When do you plan to break your fast?

StuntNun · 10/08/2021 19:35

I usually aim for 96 hours which will be another two days.

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 10/08/2021 20:46

Over half way there Stunt .... cheering you on from the side lines!

How are you feeling?

StuntNun · 11/08/2021 06:03

I'm good thanks for asking, Loveyouradvice coming up to 60 hours now. One of my ear piercings is trying to heal which is a little uncomfortable to sleep on. I have sleeper earrings in so I can keep turning it through my piercing to stop it healing up. I had my ears pierced in 1986 so it goes to show how powerful autophagy is that it can start closing a 35-year-old scar like that.

StuntNun · 11/08/2021 14:56

Well I caved at 68 hours and 37 minutes. I have been sleeping very poorly and I've spent the whole day thinking about food. I'm a firm believer in listening to your body and usually I find day three of a fast quite easy so I feel good about stopping when I needed to rather than trying to meet an arbitrary time goal.

68 hours and 37 minutes sounds great... especially those last 7 minutes!

I'm realising that my body is starting to tell me more... Ihad planned an 18 hr fasting window and my body just wanted food a couple of hours earlier so I did... and it was the right decision, felt better immediately.... other days 40 hours is no problem.

It is so long since I've heard my body tell me sensible things, rather than just saying it fancies ice cream and chocolate right now!!

StuntNun · 11/08/2021 22:49

That's a good point loveyouradvice, it's not too long ago my body was telling me I couldn't skip breakfast, let alone lunch and dinner as well.

OP posts:
StuntNun · 13/08/2021 09:49

I've never done back-to-back extended fasting before but I had lunch and dinner on Wednesday then went straight back into another fast, currently on 37 hours.

Well after last week's great weight loss this week the scales have hardly moved this week!

Only to be expected though, and fortunately fasting for health as well as weight loss is more likely to keep me on track regardless of what the scales say.

Have just heard OH is out all day tomorrow so while I generally avoid fasting at weekends I think I'll do another stretch after dinner tonight and then eat again on Sunday. Not sure how many hours yet but I'm trying not to be too prescriptive about it, so that's ok.

loveyouradvice · 13/08/2021 18:43

Interesting Stunt.... I wonder if two extended fasts so close is too much? What are your thoughts?

I know Gin Murphy is very clear you need to do at least 8 hours eating and plenty after just a 40 hour fast so I've been doing that... and rather like my Mon and Fri spacing.

I'm still expecting to do a longer fast - like you - but not til DC heads off to uni....

Congrats Littlepearl and great way to look at it ... I'm in it for the long haul too, but can't help wanting the first stone or so to melt away fast!!

StuntNun · 13/08/2021 20:06

Loveyouradvice I think it depends how you eat during your eating window. I eat big meals and make sure I'm getting plenty of nutrition in so I'm not worried about my nutrient intake. It might be harder on plans like the Fast approach where you're only allowed 500 calories on your non-fasting days. I make sure I get nutrient-rich foods such as liver, bone broth, kefir, red meat, fish, etc.

This sounds like the most suitable thread for me as I'm doing something that doesn't strictly fit into any of the other diets... So mainly 16:8, low carb and calorie counting as well. I've successfully done both Fast800 and 5:2 before but gained it back over the years. I'm 5ft3 and 38 with a desk job so really need to keep my calories in check or I gain weight.

I started at the beginning of August and so far half a stone gone. 😁 Another stone to go to get me to a healthy BMI, and then ideally another half from there to a happy weight. Strangely finding it really easy this time, I don't have any cravings and don't feel hungry.

StuntNun · 14/08/2021 11:28

Welcome Nordica it's been a little quiet lately but I think that's because it's the summer holidays. What does your usual week look like? I follow a meat-heavy low carb diet following Weston A. Price's principles (so lots of organ meats and raw dairy but no nuts or seeds) combined with daily 16:8 to 18:6 fasting, a three-meal refeed day once every week or two, and a 96-hour fast once a month.

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 14/08/2021 13:14

Great to see you Nordica ... similar ambitions to me... I've lost half a stone, another stone to go and then half more I'd like to lose

Good luck and welcome ... like you I love eating like this. Don't feel hungry or deprived and am enjoying it

loveyouradvice · 14/08/2021 13:17

Darn littlepearl ... like you this week has been disappointing scales wise... lost nowt.... 0..... ah well, it will come off... just going to hang on in there. This is a way of life as much as a way of losing weight.

I feel your pain!

It can be a bit dispiriting can't it? But keep going, you'll get there.

I managed another 40 hour stretch and broke my fast at 2pm today. This week is tricky because I've got social stuff and meals out Mon - Weds this week so I need to do the best I can and be prepared to pull things back on Thursday / Friday.

nordica · 19/08/2021 21:28

Thanks for the welcome!

My weight loss pace seems to have settled to about 1kg lost every 10 days. Super impatient for it to go quicker but on the other hand, if I can keep this up I'll get to healthy BMI by the end of September. Smile

Are most of you having two meals a day? I've been doing that this week without even thinking really because I'm too busy with work in the mornings so end up having breakfast close to lunch time and then an early dinner.

StuntNun · 20/08/2021 12:34

I generally have two meals a day Nordica but I try to have three meals at least one day a fortnight as change seems to be the secret to fasting success.

OP posts:
loveyouradvice · 23/08/2021 12:25

Nordica - great approach - healthy BMI by end of Sept sounds fab and not too far away

My weight loss lurches - 0 previous week, 5lbs this.... so I'm guessing/hoping it'll be around 2lbs a week for the next three weeks or so and then expect it to slow

I do eat two meals a day, and sometimes three.... Love that StuntNun - keeping the body guessing is meant to help our metabolisms not slow down isn't it?

StuntNun · 24/08/2021 07:17

Something like that, Nordica. The most common example is where people do one meal a day (OMAD) and get good weight loss at first but then it stops. All that's needed is to keep weight loss going is to alternate between having your one meal at lunch time and dinner time.
