Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Not necessarily for weight loss - Eat Stop Eat (2 x 24 hour fasts per week)

Hello!

I was watching This Morning yesterday, as is my wont Smile.

They were speaking to a doctor, who has written a book about gut health. One of the things he mentioned was fasting, to allow your gut microbes to rest.

I did some googling, and this method cropped up and it sounds quite manageable.

Has anyone tried it please?

I'm starting now (from 1pm), planning to fast till tomorrow at 1pm. I will do the same from 1pm on Friday.

I'm interested in the health benefits of fasting, but losing a few lbs would be a welcome side effect.

This is a new one on me! Interesting, though. How did it go?

Following with interest!

I do more 23 hour fast 1 hour eating (so one meal a day) and I love it! I do it every day and have lost weight, but the other side effects are: no stomach cramps, no flatulence, I sleep better at night and my skin's become clearer. I know it's not for everyone, but it fits in well with my lifestyle (too busy getting everyone ready in the morning for breakfast, I only get a 15 minute lunch break so can easily avoid eating then and then family dinner at 5.30) and I find it's sustainable. If you can manage 2 days I'd say go for it, just remember to drink plenty of water - good luck!

I eat a ketogenic diet (usually) which makes fasting really easy. I intermittent fast most days when I'm on keto and have extended fasts between 24 and 48 hours. I feel really good on it and my Crohn's disease has totally gone into remission.

I think fasting would be much harder if you're a carb burner and jumping straight into a 24 hour fast might be a bit much? Maybe start by skipping a meal.

Currently not eating keto or fasting though as I'm 9 months pregnant. Looking forward to getting back on it when breast feeding had been established.

Has anyone tried it please?

Yes, me. Although the fasts actually last more like 36 hours and I have lost weight.

To be honest, the biggest gain is a totally flat stomach. No more bloating.
