Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Hope you feel better soon riddle

Yesterday went rather unspeakably badly and I ended up eating a lot (lot) of chocolate celebrations. My actual meals were ok but the continuous drip feed of mini mars bars was not.
Oh well, it's Christmas.

We have a do tonight in the Cotswolds, so will drop the dc at my parents and then spend the afternoon mooching around Stow before going to our hotel, which will be nice. Food will be beyond my control today however so I will just have to go with it and see what happens!

However, I'm not casting too much scorn upon myself- this time last year I talked myself out of wearing a
very slim fitting, navy blue midi dress to this exact same Christmas do- today, a year on- and despite what I would class as a fairly busy year- I'm
Probably 2-3lbs heavier than this time last year but I think I'm actually noticeably slimmer and more toned. And I'm going to wear the dress. To have maintained to within 3 lb over a whole year is making me feel quite proud of my efforts because despite being a lifelong dieter I have never successfully maintained either the weightloss or the habits. This is now coming up to two years since my second real stint at BSD and although my loss was never dramatic (around 2.5/3 stone?) it's made such a difference to my life.

Saturday weigh-in....even though Christmas and temptation is all around, trying to keep on the straight and narrow!
I’m 11st12.2, down 0.6lb from 11st 12.8 last week, but up from 11st11.6 at the start of the week.
I’ve eaten some mashed potato every day this week. Yesterday I also had roast potatoes, stuffing, and a little bit of rice. So I’m quite surprised, given that I must have some glycogen stored and quite a lot of food ‘in transit’ through my system, as I was expecting a bit more of a bounce back up.
I’m trying very hard to avoid creeping back to 12stone over the holiday, so although I know most folks are relaxing things over Christmas, I’m going to keep recording and posting to keep me accountable. Then hoping to get down to my goal of 11st5 by end of Feb.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Maccalenny · 14/12/2019 07:22

Bear as ever you are such an inspiration.....keeps me optimistic that this time next year I might be saying ‘I’ve maintained for a year’. Hope you had a lovely day and evening - bet you looked fabulous in the dress.

My primary reason for losing weight was health, as I’m approaching 50 and was very obese. I’m so much happier now I sleep better, less aches and pains, more ease of movement now I’m smaller, less health risk....but, trivial as it sounds, I get so much pleasure every single day, from choosing an outfit to wear. I feel like I can express my personality through my clothes in a way I haven’t been confident enough to do since I was a student....although thankfully my style has changed a bit since then!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/12/2019 07:30

@Maccalenny thanks. It's tonight actually, maybe I'll post a pic if I'm feeling brave (or drunk).

But now I'm off to throw tyres around in a muddy field at bootcamp. Much more my comfort zone! I'm missing running this week and I haven't been to bootcamp for a few weeks so this is gonna hurt.....

Thanks Bear and Macca. I weighed and am down 1 lb, probably from skipping lunch and coughing! Macca I will keep weighing and monitoring over Christmas too, just to avoid gaining 10 lbs which I could easily do if I hit the bread/cheese/crackers/crisps hard. I intend to avoid bread/pasta/rice but will have roast potatoes now and again.

Today’s goal is to do a proper 800 day, no wine or crisps in house so should be a good one. Otherwise I will try and do some light housework and rest lots. This is the weekend we usually decorate house but DS may take charge of that.

Bear your level of fitness and toning is inspiring, I weigh a bit less than you but it is all blubber (waist can be 35 inches on a bad week and I am a 14/16), you are so toned and trim. Hope you have a great time at party.

Maccalenny · 14/12/2019 11:45

Just tried Asda’s marinated chilli and lime basa fillets. Really nice! 105cals and 1.4g carbs each, and they are a good size. Had them with mixed veg with a bit of soft cheese stirred in. Lovely lunch.

Riddleofthesands · 14/12/2019 20:48

Lentils, caramelised onions, garlic and cavelo nero all panfried for dinner, tastier than it sounds. Still feel lousy. Rest of family have been playing monopoly for 8 hours. It’s past cut throat and all IOU’s and mortgages now.

Maccalenny · 15/12/2019 05:15

Bear this time I hope the evening was good! And yes send us a pic of the lovely dress.

Riddle your dinner sounds lovely. The monopoly not so lovely...hope everyone has survived!

I have visitors today so we are out for Sunday lunch. I could be really really saintly and have the roast meat option with the lower carb veg. Or I could go crazy and have the veggie option, which is usually a lovely nut roast. Higher in carbs, but I get a bit defeated by the sheer amount of meat they give! It’s probably my only meal out over Christmas so I shall pick whatever I fancy at the time. Either way I’m avoiding the potatoes. But shall have cranberry sauce. There is not much logic to my planning is there!

Maccalenny · 15/12/2019 05:50

Just weighed in and got to post a chart!
I use happy scale on iPad, it’s fabulous, does lots of stuff and I really recommend it.
One of its things is the chart here - you set your goal and it breaks it down into small increments congratulates you each time you achieve them. Mine is set to 5lb increments, and I’ve only got one full one left to go, then a final 1lb. I love the part of the chart at the bottom that has gone from red, through unpleasant sludgy brown, mustard, now onto green. So close now!

Maccalenny · 15/12/2019 05:58

Oops posted before finished. So today I’m down 1.2lb on yesterday, which I think is the mashed potato-linked glycogen leaving my liver, bringing me down to 11st11.
My next weight-of-note is 11st10, which I remember being when I got pregnant with my ds, who is now 18. So hopefully in the next couple of weeks I can finally say I’ve lost my baby weight!

Riddleofthesands · 15/12/2019 10:57

Looking good Macca, I love watching your happy scales. You are so close to target it’s exciting. On the mend here. Lost 1/2 lb yesterday. Thinking about it Christmas is really just two big lunches, no reason not to keep going the rest of the time.

Today DH is making a bacon heavy fry up which I don’t fancy so I will stick to coffee. Then it’s the usual roast chicken later in the afternoon. If I skip the roast potatoes I could dip back into the 9s (just) which would be nice. I also want to measure my waist tomorrow and compare to latest NHS dire warnings.

Maccalenny · 15/12/2019 17:52

Riddle You are doing so well, even when ill which is always tough.

My lunch out was fine...turkey dinner, no potatoes, forgot to ask for cranberry sauce so angelic really! Back home, I had a small piece of Christmas cake. Then another. Then gave the rest of the cake to my visitors as they left so I would not be further tempted.

Next week should be fine....normal school week. It will be the two weeks after that, on school holiday, when snacks etc sneak in...probably all low carb, but the calories will add up. Cheeses and dips are definitely my weaknesses!

Pajamagirl · 15/12/2019 18:52

Wow @maccalenny
You have lost an amazing amount of weight! Very inspiring
Love the chart too, I find things like that very motivating
Off to start my own now
(Ps on holiday so not been great
Will weigh once home and start again )

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/12/2019 08:29

Morning all. I've not weighed myself today after having 2 Christmas dos this weekend, although last night was a gig and I didn't drink, just danced all night so maybe wouldn't have been too terrible. I've got another lunch tomorrow but that can be a salad or something light, it's just a quick daytime pub lunch.

Today I'm going to fast as long as possible. An unexpected 3 free hours means that I can whizz into town and get the last few bits I need for Xmas, so will probably not eat til after I get back.
I'm planning this week to have a 'on plan when I can' mentality and not just throw in the towel, so aiming to keep all my meals light and low carb and try my best to keep away from all the extras.

I literally cannot wait until Thursday night at 8pm which is when I officially break for Christmas- I am absolutely knackered and running on adrenaline which is not good for my sleep and therefore my food/stress goes awry too- but it's the home straight now.

Have a great week everyone!

DH cooked dinner to give me a rest, enough roast potatoes for a platoon, kids decided they didn’t want any (they are so weird and don’t much like chips either!) so I ate some as I hate wasting food! 10 st exactly today, waist 34 inches. NHS says it should be 31.5. I would be chuffed with a 32 inch waist.

Have to take DD to opticians and grocery shop, still haven’t got decorations up but going to try this afternoon if I have enough energy. 2 scrambled eggs for lunch, salmon for dinner if supermarket has it.

Maccalenny · 16/12/2019 18:52

Surrounded by chocolates and biscuits again at work. So glad it isn’t Christmas all year, I don’t think I could stay strong!

I’ve had a meatball/chickpea/tomatoey thing today, and a cheese salad. Just had a bit of dark chocolate and a coffee. All good and on-plan.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/12/2019 19:19

Lots ticked off the list today: shopping done, food shop done, iced 10 miniature Christmas cakes for teachers presents. That means now I have a few lovely spare hours tomorrow morning where I can blitz some housework and maybe start some wrapping.

My foods been good today- I ate a bag of pork scratchings for lunch (good in a bsd sense- not good at all in a healthy nourishing diet sense!) and dinner was a lovely chicken casserole, I used a Colman's sachet and chicken and bacon and just loaded it with veg.

I am exhausted after the weekend though, so an early night is in store.

Tomorrow, lunch is a pub meal but I'll happily eat a chicken salad or similar, then dinner is a beef Tagine casserole (already made) with loads of veggies.

Maccalenny · 17/12/2019 19:13

Food the same as yesterday. Still surrounded by temptation. Cant wait for Friday!

Riddleofthesands · 17/12/2019 20:13

Sausage casserole for dinner, a couple of slices of cheese for lunch. Still recovering from cough etc, going through so many boxes of tissues. Slowly feeling better. The tree is up 🎄 at last, progress! Having a couple of glasses of wine tonight.

MooPointCowsOpinion · 17/12/2019 23:31

Hello, can I join? I’ve just finished the book. I don’t have diabetes but this PST 6 months I’ve noticed weight creeping around my middle, when I’ve always been a hips and thighs person! Rather than wait for it to be a problem, I’d like to take control of it now. The next 10 days are all about prep, ready to start this on Monday 30th Dec I think... could do with the support, especially regarding hot drinks, I don’t think I can handle sugar free coffee with just a splash of milk!

Maccalenny · 18/12/2019 04:47

Hello Moo and welcome!
Regarding drinks - I stopped drinking tea for a while, as I couldn’t face it black and didn’t want to use calories on the milk. I tried lots of different herbal teas instead. I found I was ok with black coffee though.
You can have milk for drinks, but you need to keep track of the amounts to calculate calories. I think Bear did use sweetener in tea/coffee for quite a while...although the plan does not recommend them, if it is going to derail you without them, you could give them a try perhaps.

A few days for planning is a great idea. Maybe find an app to track your food - my fitness pal or nutracheck get mentioned on here a lot. Take your measurements and record your weight too, so you can look back with pride!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/12/2019 07:09

Morning moo, welcome to the group.
Yes. I used to use sweetener, I gradually cut down from 2 to half and then stopped but I did use them for a while. Almost as soon as I stopped having them I stopped wanting them, and now I wouldn't even consider having sweetener or syrups in a coffee, my taste had just changed. I have also switched to soy milk; I find I can have more for the calories and it has less carb than cows milk.

Yesterday went a bit awry: I went out for my lunch meal and had ordered a festive truffle burger- asked for no cheese (dairy) but they came and said the bread roll also had dairy and so did the coleslaw. Busy pub, big table etc so I just said ok, so what I got was a miserable burger patty with bacon, no salad, and a few fries! I should have changed my order - so that was a very costly mistake and left me feeling a bit disappointed as it was about £18 for that miserable little meal. Then after dinner (which was a really nice beef casserole I made yesterday) I had a mini mince pie and A sausage roll!

Today should be better- I'm going to weigh myself as I haven't all week. I'm going to try to fast until I get back from work at 2.30/3. Dinner will be chilli, with a portion reserved for tomorrow's tea too, with cauli rice.

I miss running now, it's been a week and 3 days. Longest I've been without a run since I started. My leg is still painful though, and I promised myself 2 weeks recovery. I'm going to do Adrienne's yoga instead and see how I feel after a bit of stretching. I will run on Friday if it's feeling ok.

Have a great day everyone. I'm counting the hours til we break up now, I'm so ready for a few weeks off

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 18/12/2019 19:09

This feels like a really long week!
Food today has been same tomato-meatball thing, and some beef stew.
Bear it’s bad when you pay for a meal that is really disappointing isn’t it. Bet your evening beef casserole was so much nicer!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/12/2019 19:13

See my post above- today was NOT better. I have eaten like a toddler at a birthday party all day. I feel rubbish too. I miss running but my leg still hurts so I'm trying not to go out, plus this time of year is just one thing after another isn't it? I can't wait for end of work tomorrow!!

OP posts:
Riddleofthesands · 18/12/2019 20:03

Hi, still coughing and so on, I start the day feeling better but run out of steam by lunchtime. Have deliberately eaten a lot today to try and get better. Poached eggs for lunch with spinach, 2 helpings of my very healthy chicken casserole for dinner which included baby potatoes. Can’t move now.
