Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Saturday weigh-in.....12st1.4 this morning, so a pound lost this week. I spent most of the week at 12st3.6, up from 12st2.4 last Saturday, so it’s all good.

It’s been a really stressful week at work, but willpower remains intact. Very excited to see new numbers in the next week or two, as I’ve been losing this stone for about three months.

Planning a cooked breakfast shortly...quorn sausage patties, poached eggs and tinned tomatoes. I’m going to find a nice fish cake recipe for later, as I’m really craving a fish cake! With some sort of cheesy mash, probably turnip and celeriac, with peas.

Tomorrow I will batch-cook a beef casserole for main meals next week. Haven’t decided on meals for tomorrow yet - will browse Pinterest now for inspiration.

I’ve done another big wardrobe purge so need to drop a few bin bags off to charity shop this morning. I’ve gone from a size 18-20 (mainly 20, although I was in denial) to a comfortable 14, so even coats have now had to be replaced. Even the few things I had held on to from previous thinner times are now too big!

Riddleofthesands · 16/11/2019 09:25

Thanks Venus and well done you too! I am rushing today but no I don’t get the body vibrating thing in bed. I have other odd menopause stuff (leg twitching) which apparently magnesium can help with. If it’s uncomfortable maybe consider saving a few calories for a late night carb?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/11/2019 10:39

I'm struggling along, but maintaining, maybe even lost 1lb or so (10.8.5 today). That's not the worst result, considering.

Will catch up on the thread later, we'll dine everyone

It's very appropriate that my autocorrect has changed 'well done' to we'll dine. That's the story of my week!!

Interesting about the way low-carb or low-cal makes people feel. I definitely felt the metabolism boost when I used to do a proper 24hr water-only fast - quite a hyper, buzzy kind of feeling. But it also made me feel quite anxious, even though it was not physically difficult.

Maccalenny · 16/11/2019 12:24

Finally brave enough to add my goal weight line to my graph - not too far away!

Venus YES! I get the quivering feeling! It's like the very central part of you is ever so slightly trembling.

I've been shit the last few days. Back today.

VenusInfers · 16/11/2019 22:36

Peachy YES!!!! Good to know I'm not mad; or at least not mad alone Grin
Riddle It's actually a quite pleasant, mild sensation and NOT one I want to stop as it means I'm on the right track. So no magnesium for me!
Macca nice graph --- inch by inch, step by step! So close now! And the getting rid of clothes is such a big step. In the months when I was lurking I was always keeping an eye on your progress - it's truly fantastic how well you have done. Flowers

Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 07:05

*Venus thank you for your kind comments - I think ‘fantastic’ is how it feels, in the literal sense....feels like a fantasy, that I cannot really have lost 64lb in 8 months. I think it will take a long while for it to sink in.
Enjoy your weekend off, hope your ds has a great birthday. Bet you will look fab in your Christmas outfit!

SegregateMumBev · 17/11/2019 07:21

Morning everyone. I've fallen off the wagon for a few months, but I'm full of good intentions to get back on! DH is away a few days this week, which will make meal planning a bit easier. So I have dug out my copy of the fast 800 book and will start thinking about what I need to buy.

Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 07:28

Bev good luck with your restart...sounds like a good plan to have a few days to yourself to get settled into it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2019 09:02

Morning all
Macca, legendary as always. Love the photo story. I've been doing similar as I've been sorting photos recently. Sometimes a bit of perspective helps doesn't it, we forget how far we've come.

Phoenix how are things with you?

Venus I get the trembling bed thing, but I don't like it. I'd never associated it with low carb before, but I do sometimes get it, it's like the blood is rushing round my body so fast. I am an insomniac though so anything like that really unsettles me. It never actually is my heart rate though, the last time I felt it my heart rate was 38bpm which is practically dead.

Welcome to any new starters!

Bev good luck on your restart. I'm re-Reading the book too. I really need to flick that switch and get back on it!

Currently, I'm muddling through. I'm struggling if truth be told, not with my food per se, but with life. I've had a very busy few months and the last few weeks have been especially so. I think my MH is suffering from the wet and cold, the clocks changing and general stress. I feel like I'm beginning to fray at the edges somewhat and I recognise this as a symptom of probably neglecting my mental health, so it's time to pull it all back together.

Today is a day of regrouping and sorting stuff out; I'm going to write a BIG list of all the life admin I need to do and I'm going to tick them off one by one, rather than dither around with post it notes everywhere!
I've planned my menu for at least 5 days using freezer stocks, so that's done.

And so today: going for a run, haven't actually done a solo run for a while, so I have a podcast lined up and I'm heading out!
Food will be a slow cooked joint of beef in ale, with loads of veg.
R&R - aside from my jobs I'm going to set aside an hour to either do adriennes yoga or listen to a hypno recording to try and regain some zen from this chaos.

Sorry for the essay!
You're all doing so well, so inspiring. Keep up the good work, folks.

Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 14:18

Bear the yoga or guided meditation sounds a good idea to steady yourself a bit. It always sounds like you are very busy taking care of everyone - can’t do that unless you take care of yourself.

Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 14:40

Weirdly I really like this time of year...I like thick coats and jumpers and woolly scarves and boots when I go out, and I like a heap of blankets on the settee to curl up under, with candles lit, when the light starts to fade in the weekend afternoons. Ive never really liked hot weather at all, I’m much more suited to the winter.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2019 16:09

Macca i am the absolute opposite, hate the dark, hate the cold, hate having to wear layers, hate the constant threat of coughs and colds, hate the snow (except to look at from inside!) I do like the Christmas things though and the log fire and all that, but just wish it was warmer!!

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 17:34

I might find I enjoy summer more now that I’m not so big... my wardrobe has always been all about the layering, but now I can do nice skirts with pretty tops. But winter will always be my favourite I think.

Maccalenny · 17/11/2019 17:36

I finally got round to making little egg muffins/ mini quiches. I put ham pieces into a muffin tin, very lightly scrambled enough eggs for one per muffin, and a bit of cheese on top. 10 mins in the oven....gorgeous! I will definitely be doing them again often. I like my usual crustless quiche but this was quicker and easier.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2019 20:16

Have you seen the ones where you use a piece of ham to make a sort of 'cup' for the egg? They look good.

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/11/2019 20:17

like these

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 18/11/2019 05:01

That was what I did, only my ham was big so they dont look so tidy! Also I part-scrambled the egg first, so they took 10 mins to cook instead of 25. I’ve eaten two and have four left - will see how they are cold later.
You could add loads of extra good stuff too, might try mushrooms next time.

Maccalenny · 18/11/2019 20:14

Hope everyone has had a good day and is keeping warm! I was weirdly hungry after my usual big breakfast, so ate a bigger lunch than normal. I think the breakfast may have been a bit lighter on protein than normal...I’m adding extra cheese tomorrow so I make it through till lunchtime a bit easier.

The ham egg muffin things were really good cold as well....they will be a regular feature for me from now on.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/11/2019 20:20

Had a good day food wise but very stressful, life wise!

Fasted til lunch, then had some leftover roast beef from last night for lunch, and dinner was a lamb mince /quorn combo with loads of veg. I've snacked on cold meat this afternoon and had some alpro and raspberries for pudding. Done 19k steps (inc a 5 km run)

Tomorrow I am working all 3 of my jobs! Invigilating at one school in the morning, at a different school in the afternoon, and then teaching my own class in the evening. Will be exhausting but I need the money!! I'm making a salad lunch to take with me, and then dinner will be a gastro fish thing with veg

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/11/2019 05:41

Yesterday was exhausting, glad that's over! I'm gradually ticking things off my list of a million things to do though. This week was always going to be manic and it's nearly half way done so that's good.

Yesterday my food was dire. I ate brown toast for breakfast as it was quick and it just set me off grazing all day- nothing too terrible but an apple here, a mini pork pie there, etc and then for dinner I had leftover quorn mince and a bread roll as I was so exhausted I couldn't think straight!

Today: going for my mid length run (10k) this morning but I'm not going to race, just put on a podcast and enjoy a bit of headspace. Working this afternoon. Food will be salad of some sort before I leave for work, and dinner will be the gastro fish I was supposed to have last night!

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 20/11/2019 12:45

Off work with a very dodgy stomach...on the plus side, I’m expecting to see new numbers sooner than expected.

Riddleofthesands · 21/11/2019 15:27

Sorry to hear you’re not well Maccalenny. Not doing great here, cheese toasties in the cold weather. Dinner is fish and salad. Will keep trying!
