Blood sugar diet and fast800 thread 16

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/08/2019 21:26

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

I am using MFP but it keeps telling me off at the end of the day for eating too few calories. Is there any way to modify this? It's annoying as I want praise not censure.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/11/2019 13:55

I use one called Fat secret, it doesn't tell you off!

OP posts:
PhoenixMama · 08/11/2019 14:30

You can change it Camper - it's under goals and then calories, protein and fat goals

Peachypips78 · 08/11/2019 18:28

Thanks guys- I didn't actually gain so very happy! Back on it today. Turmeric and root veg soup for lunch and butternut for dinner so a bit carbs but well within cals.

Welcome Camper !!

Maccalenny · 08/11/2019 18:41

Camper you may find you lose weight quickly and don’t get hungry on quite high carbs. Some people are really carb-sensitive and struggle unless they keep really low. If you are happy and losing, then enjoy the jam! If not, and you want to try changing something, maybe change that. I eat mostly protein and fat for breakfast as if I start that day with anything very carby - even natural yoghurt - I’m starving well before lunchtime.

I keep meaning to try making chia jam. I do eat berries with yoghurt quite often, but I fancy the jam idea too.

Maccalenny · 08/11/2019 18:44

Peachy the turmeric and root veg soup sounds perfect for weather today!

VenusInfers · 08/11/2019 18:50

Good day today, though I did use my last 80 calories for an end-of-the-week gin and lemon juice. Don't think MM would approve, but ooooh it was nice!

How are everyone's weekend plans shaping up? My DH is working from home most of it, so it'll be me and DS 9 mooching about and doing this and that.

Def the weekend for soup - there's that nip in the air!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 08/11/2019 19:19

Gin and slimline is zero carbs so you're alright as an occasional treat!

OP posts:
Maccalenny · 09/11/2019 04:27

I stay on plan pretty much at weekends, but don’t restrict calories, as I’ve been on this a long while! So my meals today will be:

Full-fat natural yoghurt, raspberries and desiccated coconut
Halloumi with roasted veg
Ikea meatballs with turnip mash and peas.

That will give me around 1100 cals, 50g carbs, 60g protein and 60g fat, due to all the full-fat dairy and the meatballs. There will be milky coffee too, probably bumping it up to 1200 cals.

Maccalenny · 09/11/2019 06:01

Just done the official weekly weigh-in - I’ve lost 4.6lb this week! Really surprised, as I haven’t changed what I eat, just tightened up on the amount.

The lowest weight I have been since the birth of my dd, who is now 14, was very briefly 12st4. So I’m into new territory now at 12st2.4.

My next milestone weight is 11st10, which I was when I got pregnant with ds, who is 18. It would be great to be there by Christmas, then I will have just a few more lb to go to my target of 11st5 by end of Feb. Healthy bmi here I come!

MsTSwift · 09/11/2019 06:46

Managed to get bmi from overweight 27 to 25 in a month lost just under a stone now and feel better. I am being hardcore and basically not eating if I can. So skip breakfast and even lunch. Dinner on smaller plate and minimal snacks. Had wine last night though there’s only so far one can go!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/11/2019 07:19

Morning. I feel rubbish today, I've been fighting off Ds's cold all week and I think it's finally hit, plus I have a headache because I drank too much wine yesterday and not enough water. I got myself very stressed out and tearful yesterday (I'm not a cryer normally) about my new job.

Today I am determined to stop sabotaging my good intentions. I am really burying my feelings in food at the moment and it a) doesn't help and b) makes me feel shitty about myself too - it's got to stop.

I'm going to outdoor bootcamp at 8 which is always fun, and then I plan to fast til lunch. We have my nephews party this evening which will be alcohol and party food so I will just have to exercise some restraint as there won't be anything I can really eat that's on plan.

Everyone's doing so well. Have a great weekend.

Campervan69 · 09/11/2019 08:02

Morning everybody hope everybody has a good weekend.

I weighed myself this morning and I'm 11 stone 6 so the scales are going down and all is good. My only worry is that I'm going out dancing with the girls tonight on a heavy night so I'm going to have to try not to drink too much and then not to overeat tomorrow to make myself feel better.

I have never in my life before managed to do this.....

Maccalenny · 09/11/2019 09:04

Bear so sorry the job is causing stress, on top of illness. Hope you are ok. Outdoor boot camp will be chilly this morning! I am, as ever, in awe of your dedication. I’m curled up on the settee with third cup of coffee and not planning on moving far.

Camper well done! Enjoy tonight, just get back on track tomorrow.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/11/2019 09:23

This was the mud at bootcamp this morning! -1* too!

Looks horrific. Bet you loved it!

Campervan69 · 09/11/2019 10:20

That looks horrific. My worst nightmare. I like gentle yoga or body balance in a fragrant warm studio Grin

Riddleofthesands · 09/11/2019 11:46

8 days no booze, really really pleased about that. I am sleeping much better. If anyone is thinking of giving up/taking a break it is worth it.

Period arrived so no point weighing here, I must confess to sobbing as I am so tired of these (hopefully last few) horrible menopause periods. Will stick to principles of BSD and avoid the obvious carbs, chicken stir fry today with lots of veg, ginger and chilli.

Hope everyone has a good weekend and Bear going back to work is a big adjustment. A lot to get used to. Hopefully next week will be easier.

waterandlemonjuice · 09/11/2019 12:35

Hi everyone, you are all doing so well. I’m on day 6 of BSD and no booze and I feel a lot better too. I probably went over last night as we had a chicken and I ate 2small roast potatoes and then some dark chocolate but hey ho.

Peachypips78 · 09/11/2019 13:12

Turmeric soup was indeed delicious and kept me full, but I am a pound up today despite eating 800 yesterday so I think it's too carbs for me (parsnips?)

I can't understand why my weight loss is so bloody slow. Argh. MFPing the crap out of today. Well done for all your amazing losses. I need to start exercising again. I'm afraid though.

Oooooooo desiccated coconut on yoghurt yum!

I sleep better on this diet too.its so good for you.

Maccalenny · 09/11/2019 15:11

Camper your comment on liking yoga in a fragrant warm studio stirred a memory.....I was a member of a gym before I had kids, and amongst other classes I tried yoga there for the first time. Trouble was they held the yoga in the studio where one of the sweaty classes had just finished....it absolutely stank! It was warm, but nothing pleasant about the fragrance!

Campervan69 · 09/11/2019 16:05

Ha ha terrible Envy (not envy) I'm a member of David Lloyd and one of the things I love about it is it always smells good.

VenusInfers · 09/11/2019 21:29

Ha ha Macca, that sounds properly grim! Well done bear for going out in that! Dedication indeed! And how long did it take to get the mud off your trainers? Hope you feel better soon.
I'm def in the 'naice' yoga brigade myself, with the odd run on the side. Not in the mud though, no no no. grin

Peachy it's so frustrating when things aren't going as they ought. Stick with MFP, it should work out in the end.

MsTSwift That's a fantastic achievement! Enjoy those treats, you have earned them and then some.

My day’s plan yesterday did not work out as the kids were busy with stuff so I didn’t need to cook a main meal for us all. I did make a really nice roasted cauliflower, onion and cherry tomato with turmeric and cumin. Ate half for lunch and half for tea - will definitely do again. Unfortunately I also ate a whole tub of taramasalata - that’s a lot of fat and more wheat than my stomach appreciates.

Today should be a chicken and bacon thing, the rest of the halloumi with salad, and a bit of yoghurt and raspberries. I’ve got the Yeo valley kefir yoghurt to try, and I will put some in the yoghurt maker overnight too to see how that goes.

Main meal prep for the week - a slow-cooker turkey chilli.

Have a good Sunday everyone!
