Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

@Gemi33 do you have the book on kindle? I found I could skim read it in an hour and then I went back and re read bits over the next few days.

Ditto busy week at work though 🙈😆

Everything I have seen says it's easy to do this as a vegetarian, it's only impossible as a vegan.

If you're not ready to start, why not just cut down on carbs over the next few days? I actually wish I'd done that rather than straight into it!! Good luck ;-)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/07/2019 10:59

Gemi if you eat eggs and dairy I think the plan is quite manageable, you can have tofu and some quorn products; I think it's quite hard to be vegan on this diet but it is possible. I'm finding it a real challenge to be dairy free although it's getting easier now I'm more used to it, ;but I'm not vege or vegan )

Gemi I'm vegetarian and have been doing BSD for a year. I found it quite easy and haven't missed pasta at all which was a real surprise to me. So long as you eat cheese and maybe eggs you'll be fine. I eat some Quorn products but will admit getting a decent amount of protein can be difficult.

Ohyesiam · 18/07/2019 17:35

Gemi33 I’m vegetarian and have lost 2.5 stone since May.
I did fret about protein and were pulses too carbs, but then I forgot about it all and just lost weight!
I am not a quorn fan, but their pretend ham is sooooo low in calories and makes a good snack late afternoon.
I usually skip breakfast( doing 8:16) have a 400 cal lunch of salad nuts seeds , goats Brie and olive oil.
Then dinner of various curry, stir fry type thing. Or halloumi skewers, or omelette. I’ve had weeks where I’ve had a portion of purses every day and still lost.
Good luck with it x

PhoenixMama · 19/07/2019 07:04

Well I'm still moving down which is amazing. Apparently my body needed more calories to lose which I've heard before but didn't think was true! What do you guys think? Yesterday was an insanely frustrating day so I'm glad it didn't get totally derailed!

mommybear1 · 19/07/2019 09:07

Morning all. Well the scales have finally moved again 2lbs down Grin. Slow progress but still progress I've been doing HIIT in the mornings which I have found hard but I think it's really helped - sadly it's helped my appetite as well but I have stuck to my 800 I really want to at least get through 2 weeks at 800. DH and I have agreed to review it at the end of the 2 weeks and see if we will continue or go to a 5:2 or other regime.

GreyBasket · 19/07/2019 12:02

@mommybear1 that's good news!

Have you cut all pasta out of the 800 calories? I know when I was doing the previous version of IF from MM, that's the thing that made the biggest difference. Even if it's wholemeal, it's still best to drop it I think.

But great the scales are going down!

PhoenixMama · 19/07/2019 13:13

Well done @mommybear1 How much is that in total so far?

mommybear1 · 19/07/2019 15:01

Thanks @GreyBasket yes I have dropped the pasta I did start off having the wholewheat pasta for the pesto pasta in a jar recipe but as you say I found the calories just to high to justify it. Thank you @PhoenixMama it's now 9.5lbs GrinI think if I had done the exercise daily I'd be even better but I'm focusing on what I have lost and the fact I'm actually enjoying the food I've got used to the smaller portions and I believe this is going to work for me both in terms of weight loss and maintenance - hopefully the health benefits will kick in soon as well.

GreyBasket · 19/07/2019 16:34

Hope everyone else is having a good Friday.

I bought some keto sticks from eBay for a few pounds. They arrived today and I tested and I am definitely in keto 😆

That's good to know as I just wasn't feeling it!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/07/2019 17:14

It's my birthday today, so although I did go for a nice 10km run this morning, I have also been out for a nice pub lunch and we'll be having Chinese delivery and wine tonight! Tomorrow will be family celebration so probably definitely off plan again but then I'm back on it for next week.

In fact, I'm planning a very strict week as my kids are away from Tuesday to Saturday and we go away on Saturday so I could have one last blast week with no distractions!

What keto sticks did you buy Grey? Are you actively trying to get into keto or are you just testing to check?

Happy Birthday 🍰 🎁 @thenewaveragebear1983 Hope you have a lovely evening

PhoenixMama · 19/07/2019 18:21

Happy birthday @thenewaveragebear1983 Thank you for all the inspiration & encouragement!

I'm just off out to dinner with a friend and I'm so over this week & I feel like my body is humming with rage and I want ALL the alcohol. This is not going to end well!

HadleyM · 19/07/2019 18:38

Hi all - I was wondering if any of you ever had a s total slump. I felt like my batteries had been taken out yesterday. Had to go bet at 6 and pretty much sleep through until 10!Shock
I can't remember being so tired.

Is this the 'metabolic switch'? Or am i just coming down with something (no other symptoms)

Happy birthday @thenewaveragebear1983 thanks for the thread.

PhoenixMama · 19/07/2019 19:30

@hadley How far in are you? Sounds like the keto flu. You just feel really run down, usually lasts a couple of days-a week.

mommybear1 · 19/07/2019 19:31

Hi @HadleyM yes both DH and I have had this I found after drinking a LOT of water I felt better the next day. Good luck Wink

HadleyM · 19/07/2019 20:12

@phoenixmama @mommybear1

I'm W2D5. I'm hoping it just lasts a couple of days as I have things to do. My old WOE was very much wine pasta haribos though so I suspect this may be a bumpy landing into my current WOE .

I think I've been drinking a lot of water but will give it some more welly!

PhoenixMama · 19/07/2019 20:52

My rule of thumb is at least 3L minimum but my keto flu segwayed into a chest infection so I have no idea where one ended and the other began!

HadleyM · 20/07/2019 00:38

THanks, I'll aim for three, I think I'm doing just two atm.

I've also seen a free tracking app called 'keto' which I've downloaded last night- it seems quite good although I Haven't actually used it (I figured that if my first entry was birthday cake and wine it might make it implode...) but it seems to adjust your macros to help you achieve Ketosis and it has some nice functions. Now, we aren't necessarily keto focussed on this plan, although it can be one of the tools in our armoury to use so if anyone is interested then it's there.

@thenewaveragebear1983 Happy Birthday weekend 🍰 🎂 🥳 I hope you have a lovely time celebrating.

Yes, don't try the keto thing quite yet 😆

I was just curious about myself about it. MM said it would probably happen in the book and be very useful for draining the fat from around the organs, but I just didn't feel it was happening. I bought 100 for £3.65 from eBay from a seller called deanyfabrics, and they are the proper simple medical ones. Can recommend.

I don't know if I will be in keto still though as after a mammoth day shopping with my teenager for clothes yesterday, I snapped and had some three glasses wine and a handful of the little one's sweets 🙈 I resisted crisps and all other crap though at least.

I am going to the gym this morning but then I have to brave shopping AGAIN as the teen has school shoes reserved in a different city.

onanothertrain · 20/07/2019 09:09

Happy birthday bear hope you enjoyed t e cake and wine!
I've stayed completely on plan this week, between 800-1000 calories a day and under 50g carbs. Also managed 3 runs this week including 10k last night in the pissing rain.

Super123 · 20/07/2019 09:31

Happy Birthday for yesterday Bear 🎉💐🎁.

Super123 · 20/07/2019 10:03

Thanks for the succint OP.
This thread is exactly what I need right now.
Last Christmas, I was 13 stone 8, I'm now 11 stone 6.

I've done this by doing the following. I try not to be too rigid about anything though, as I'm aiming for long term sustainable change.

1 Getting a Fit bit and walking as much as I can every day. I have just increased my target to 11, 000 steps a day, with 40 active minutes. Its natural now for me to walk to the shops, GP etc.

2 Stopping eating at 7pm ish. I realised I ate out of habit and every cup of tea was accompanied by a biscuit. I still drink tea all night and if I feel like a snack I have one, but I rarely do.

3 Getting weighed at local community health venue each week for motivation.

4 Being generally more mindful about what I eat. It was reasonably healthy, but room for improvement, especially snack and sugar wise.

5 Discovering MM and tweaking my diet to move towards this as my long term sustainable eating plan.
