Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Hello all
Long time lurker on this thread. Just love all the support and chat that goes on - it always inspires me.

Just popping up to say that the motivation it gives me has helped me to achieve my dream weight of a hair under 9st for the first time in my adult life except that one time I had tonsillitis with none of the angst or drama of other WOE.

Thank you bear, phoenix, mac, and all the frequent posters! Now just going to do a couple more days so that I stay in my zone after gently re-introducing the occasional bit of butter drenched toast into my diet.

BloomedAgain · 24/06/2019 10:07

I read the book over the weekend. I gained a lot of weight due to illness and medication. On top of adapting to this I feel like I don't recognise myself so am embarking on this today. I'm using myfitnesspal to log food too.

teta · 24/06/2019 10:31

Good luck @Bloomed. It's nice to wrest back control .
Really well done @VenusInfers.
@Justalittlebitfurther I went to a ball and had lots of wine plus a delicious Brownie. And then I had a packet of hula hoops when I came in. Because I was craving carbs again.
I've stayed the same all week . I think I know the reason why. I've had cravings for oats and Peanut butter for some reason. And been coming in at over 800 most days. Plus the ball didn't help. So I need to be super strict this week.

BloomedAgain · 24/06/2019 10:39

Thanks Teta. I am on track and will be batch cooking soup later.

FurForksSake · 24/06/2019 11:26

Venus that’s amazing! I hope at some point I can join you at sub 9stone.

Back on it today, spinning went well, steak and veg for lunch and halloumi salad for dinner.

Really hoping to get down to 10st11 by this time next week.

PhoenixMama · 24/06/2019 14:33

That's amazing @VenusInfers Congratulations!

@BloomedAgain a HUGE amount of my weight was from medication, and years of being told there wasn't really anything I could do about it... well they were wrong! With this WOE you can and will lose it. I went out yesterday in a dress I hadn't fit into in 6 years, and I kept catching my reflection and not initially realising it was me lol!

I do have to confess after weighing in at my goal on Saturday I celebrated by eating ALL the carbs. Which my body then rejected and I felt awful. Serves me right!!

Back on it today. Although I did a strong run this morning (still on C25K) but was starving afterwards but I've been very good the rest of the day!

nellyitsme · 24/06/2019 14:45

Hi all I've got a quick question:
I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, acid reflux and an inflamed oesophagus back in February. I been keeping to a mainly low carb Mediterranean diet and I was prescribed omeprazole, which I’ve now weaned myself off because I'm concerned about long terms use of medication.
The advice I got from the hospital was to eat smaller, frequent meals and to try to lose weight. I enjoy the Mediterranean diet, and I think it's why I feel so well, but I’ve not lost weight nor have I put any on. I was thinking the fast 800 programme may help me to lose some weight and would suit me.

Does anyone have any experience of doing 5:2 with acid reflux and a hiatus hernia? Would it make it worse or not?

BloomedAgain · 24/06/2019 14:52

PhoenixMama Thank you that's given me hope!
nellyitsme that sounds hard. I don't have experience but I would try it and see?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/06/2019 17:06

Nelly you could try reading the clever guts diet book (also by Michael Moseley), he advocates the Mediterranean style diet in there for all sorts of digestive disorders and health concerns, with some added extras thrown in to support your gut health and reduce inflammation.

nellyitsme · 24/06/2019 17:47

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 and @BloomedAgain That's probably a good combination to go for. I'm wondering about doing the 5:2 with reflux to shift some weight- about 2stone. I think I'll get myself settled back into the mediterranean eating plan then try a few fast days to see how it goes

Justalittlebitfurther · 24/06/2019 19:06

I’ve had a dreadful day. Had a square of chocolate at lunchtime because I was unable to resist and then pringles this afternoon because I was starving 😔 what do people keep at work for those times when they are really hungry me want to have something small?

Justalittlebitfurther · 24/06/2019 19:13

I’ve just totted up my calories for today and it’s just over 1000 despite the pringles and chocolate so whilst not ideal, hopefully it’ll be ok if I keep at it! Can’t let the hen do be the undoing of my start!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/06/2019 20:27

Gah, I was doing brilliantly today, had a really nice lunch of salad and lentils and chicken, dinner was all planned out and calorie counted. Then I found an Easter egg of the dc's they'd had at Easter and forgotten while I was tidying up, so I only went and ate it! The whole thing! Why do I do this to myself????!!!

I blame hormones and a rubbish night sleep, but even so! I did manage 19k steps today doing some serious gardening, which will hopefully offset some damage.

Tomorrow I'm at the dentist mid morning so I'm planning to run, then have a quick bite to eat, and will probably not be able to eat then until dinner time as I'm having some work done.

Venus fabulous results...well done!

Bloomed the batch cooking works really well for me - I prep most of my meals at the weekend and don’t need to think to much about it through the week.

BloomedAgain · 24/06/2019 23:37

Good idea Maccalenny. Tonight a friend joined me for soup to 'show solidarity.

FurForksSake · 25/06/2019 09:08

Anybodies periods go missing on this WOE? I’m 36 and usually regular as clockwork so very odd!

Shopping came last week, I bought some pre-cooked chicken breasts for a lower fat salad protein, I keep going for feta or halloumi and it doesn’t leave many calories for dinner!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2019 09:10

Fur it can definitely play havoc with your regularity especially if you're very low carb, or if you lose a lot in the first few weeks. It does settle though, mine are back to regular as clockwork except if I have a month where I train a lot. It's because oestrogen is linked to fat so when you lose a lot of fat, your oestrogen levels change.

Delurking (brilliant and inspiring thread btw) to say @nellyitsme, I’ve got a hiatus hernia and have just completed my first week. I have had no reflux and lost 9lbs! So I would definitely give it a go.

I make sure to eat early enough before bedtime, and to avoid most cheeses in the afternoon/evening too, but these are things I do normally to avoid reflux.

I’m not sure if the gut diet book would help as this is a stomach hernia rather than an intestine one, if anyone who’s read it can tell me more I would be interested.

nellyitsme · 25/06/2019 09:30

That's great,@Acrasia, did you do any fasts? I think I'll ease myself into it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 25/06/2019 10:04

Acracia I'm not sure that the gut book would help with your hernia (as that's a muscular thing, no?) but it could definitely help with your reflux as it's all about promoting good intestinal health by increasing your bacteria (so helps digestion, inflammation etc- both the symptoms and the causes of your reflux). It's also a really interesting read about how we digest food and how our bodies work. I read it to my 6year old (the journey through the digestive system bit) as a bedtime read a while back, he loved it!!!

Ha! A career as a gastroenterologist beckons! I managed to delay breakfast till now so just enjoying a boiled egg. I suspect hunger might hit me on day 3.

Gillster · 25/06/2019 13:51

Hi everyone can I join. Been lurking for a little while and decided that this is the week to properly start. Your stories have been so inspirational.

Starting weight yesterday was 12st8.8lbs which at 5’8” gives me a BMI of 26.6%. So a little overweight but not massively so. Really want to shift a stone in the first instance and then assess from there. Planning on doing the BSD for the next 8 weeks as just want to feel a bit better about myself.

I’m finding it easier to avoid breakfast and not eat until lunchtime otherwise I'd be constantly hungry. Have meal planned and done the food shop last night. Just have to keep on track with what i’ve planned.

BloomedAgain · 25/06/2019 14:24

I just started too Gillster. I'm delaying my first meal as long as I can too. Today I've had eggs, later it will be a large amount of homemade soup and possibly an early evening snack as I tend to get massively hungry at night.

Acrasia · 25/06/2019 15:11

nellyitsme I’ve been eating two meals a day between 12 and 7, which I suppose is classed as time restricted eating, with a 17 hour fast. I have been hungry, but I need to learn not to feed my hunger at the first symptom anyway!

That sounds really interesting bear. A hiatus hernia is when part of the stomach heads up past the diaphragm. I was only diagnosed last year, but I have had reflux for about 15 years. I pretty much know all my triggers, but sometimes choose to try my luck anyway Sad I can tell from the first sip of white wine, for example, if is a wine I can drink without worrying or if it will end up in burning agony in the middle of the night. However, my DP was at the doctor this morning, while I was writing that last post even, getting tested for intolerances because he’s been having bad poops (sorry TMI) and it coupe very well be useful for him.

nellyitsme · 25/06/2019 17:43

Hi @Acrasia thanks for your reply. Sorry I've not replied sooner I've been out all day. I think like you, I've been prone to reflux for at least 10 years. I think it's worse if I've overweight too. Hope your DHs poo issues get sorted out.

The whole gut/ brain/inflammation/ stress/ eating connection is understood more in recent years because of studies Michael M, Tim Spector etc. For me, my whole digestive system seems affected, from top to bottom. It took a hit from too many doses of antibiotics over a period of 5 years for tooth abscesses and a breast abscess, then last year we had a long drawn out building project for over a year and for part of that time had no kitchen so ate too many ready meals and processed foods. I think this all exacerbated my reflux and digestive problems etc.
