Blood sugar diet and Fast800 thread 15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2019 07:34

Here’s the new thread for the BSD followers, plus those following the Fast800 plan. Everyone is welcome to join us. Here’s a quick recap!

The BSD/fast 800 is a low carb, Mediterranean style way of eating, with the primary aim of stabilising your insulin response when you eat. You achieve this by: eating fewer carbs, cutting out sugar and sweet tasting foods including most fruit, and by following a low calorie plan that reduces your visceral fat meaning that everything functions more effectively. Less insulin means less fat storage (in a nutshell, although more info can be found on this online). The diet was designed to reduce T2 diabetes symptoms (or even reverse it entirely) but can also be used for weightloss.

Eat:
Meats and fish
Oils
Eggs
Full fat dairy products
Nuts, seeds
Pulses/ beans
Veg that grows above ground
Limit fruit: apples, pears, berries- in moderation, with meals, with fats

Occasional alcoholic drinks allowed (spirits, red wine are preferable to beer, lager, etc)
Tea and coffee, herbal tea etc.
And water- drink lots of water!

Avoid
sugar, sweets, and ‘naturally occurring sugars’ such as fructose, maltose, honey, agave, puréed dates etc....

Potatoes of any variety
Pasta
Rice
Breakfast cereals (occasional steel cut oats are ok)
Breads/ flour based products

Exercise:
Michael Moseley recommends HIIT workouts to increase calorie burn and help to tone up, and recommends walking more (increasing your steps weekly until you hit around 10000 a day)

Mindfulness
MM also suggests a programme of mindfulness, meditation, practised for a few minutes each day.

How to follow the plan:
Fast800: follow the plan above, sticking to 800 calories every day for 2 weeks. Ideal to give your weightloss a real kick start, plus improve your insulin function and reduce your sugar cravings.
8 weeks BSD- 8 weeks, follow the guidelines above- 800 calories a day. You don’t need to count carbs grams because the diet is naturally self limiting.
BSD 5:2- for a more leisurely weightloss journey, or as maintenance, or once you’ve done an 8 week stint or 2 weeks of Fast800, you can play around with a combination of increased calorie count, ‘free eating’ and fasting days (800 cals) until you achieve your goals. Many of our long standing members now follow this approach.

You can stop 800 calorie days at any time once you achieve your goal. It’s advised to limit yourself to 12 weeks maximum at 800 calorie days, but you should get excellent results in 8 weeks. Depending on your weightloss goals, you can do further ‘rounds’ of either the 8 week BSD or the Fast800.

Fur forks are you vege? When I go to harvester I always go for the half chicken, ask for veg side instead of chips, and then revisit the salad bar to add onto my main! I agree with you though- their portion sizes are huge and it's very high calorje stuff (and annoyingly even the BSD compatible things tends to be very high calorie or 'smothered' or 'glazed' unfortunately) - it's a shame because I bloody love harvester! Still, it's one meal- enjoy it, don't worry about the calories, just get back on plan when you can!

FurForksSake · 16/06/2019 19:43

I'm just back. Not a veggie, love halloumi though!

I did ok, too much icecream but otherwise pretty ok. Salad was nice but I didn't manage to finish it. I had some of DS1's grilled chicken, which was nice. I am still shocked at the calorie values of a lot of it, I really was in denial about how unhealthy it was!

I've booked Coal Bar and Grill for our anniversary, they have nice sounding grilled meat skewers I can have with veg.

But I agree, I love the harvester. My kids are 6 and soon-to-be four and it really works for us.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/06/2019 20:34

I think it's the psychology of free but not free salad.

My second day dairy free has been ok. I've not been nearly so grouchy today! I missed my yogurt this evening after dinner, that's my only 'pudding' treat really, and I did have a single roastie with my dinner, plus a homemade sausage roll (although that was technically taste testing for PTA event on Friday!)

My food's been good, I had a salad lunch with tuna, and we had roast beef and veg for dinner. I've not snacked at all which is a positive change recently. Maybe it's because I would normally snack on dairy stuff and because I'm not, I'm just not having snacks? Interesting anyway.

I would imagine I'm over on calories, and as I haven't weighed anything it's pointless speculating what I've had. I'd hazard a guess that I'll weigh in tomorrow as a maintain over the weekend. Although that's a whole weekend with no dairy, no alcohol, no sugar....so who knows?

Week ahead: strict week needed! I've been very relaxed about it all recently, but it's not paying off. My appetite is too big to trust it that much! So: I'm going to really endeavour to weigh and track everything before I eat it. That's really the key for me. I plan my menus but then I don't monitor what I'm actually eating which is a bit daft.

Can some kind person please remind me how many grams of carbs per day to aim for?

Thanks

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/06/2019 17:44

Ohyes a lot of people aim for 50g a day. You can also look at percentages of total intake, so I usually aim for 20% total calories (as I usually have more than 800 cals these days)

However- you don't need to count carbs on this plan. If you stick to 800 calories and avoid the big 5 or 6 (bread, pasta, potatoes, grains, rice and sugar), it should still work for you because it's about having the right type of carbs (plus the calorie count naturally limits the carbs anyway)

If you find you're having more than ideal, (let's be honest we know if we've had a carby day) or if you're not losing weight, then it can be helpful to check how many grams you're having, but it's not vital to success.

Closing the kitchen today on; 880 cals (all weighed and measured) 32g carbs, 12k steps (which includes a 5km treadmill run)

Sugar free✔️
Dairy free ✔️
Alcohol free✔️

Not a bad day! I feel strangely calm and not hungry, which is good. And my godawful raging mood seems to have subsided too.

Tomorrow is my wedding anniversary but we're not celebrating particularly (as we only recently celebrated 10 years since we met). I might put my wedding dress on and flounce around a bit though! Lunch will be a nice salad, and dinner will be some sort of ready meal most likely as Dh is 'cooking'Grin

Hello!

Well apparently I am 3lbs up after the weekend. I was perfect yesterday and did 11miles of spinning. So hopefully I am due a woosh.

I've just started taking a multivitmain for hair, skin and nails as it seemed to have the vitamins MM recommended. What do other people take?

Tonight I am making lamb koftes with a freekah and pomegranate salad. Hoping I can make it come out at 500calories.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2019 13:19

Furforks 11 miles spinning?? Good grief! How's the glutes today????

Tight!!

TriSkiRun99 · 18/06/2019 19:19

Can I ask does anyone else really struggle with acid reflux when reducing their carb intake? I’ve got no gallbladder and I’ve tried a few times over the last couple of years to go low carb but every time I give up because I just end up really uncomfortable and living on gaviscon. It goes away again if I put carbs back into my diet Sad

TriSkiRun99 · 18/06/2019 19:20

I can’t work out if it’s the no carb effect or the corresponding increase in fats as a proportion of diet that then occurs which then triggers acid production. Hmmm

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2019 20:21

Tri do you think its too high in fat to do if you have no gallbladder? I don't know much about the gallbladder op but I Remember my bil has his removed and had to go low fat.

OP posts:
Justalittlebitfurther · 18/06/2019 21:20

I think it might be the fats TriSki I also don’t have a gallbladder but I don’t eat dairy and I take an anti reflux medication due to other medications I take. I have struggled in the past when ‘dieting’ as it always seems to give me acid reflux. I would ask your GP for their help.

I put on this morning - not sure why 😔 I’ve got a few social events over the next week including a hen do at the weekend. Any idea what I could eat at Prezzo’s?

TriSkiRun99 · 19/06/2019 07:33

Thanks bear & just, it’s just really frustrating as eating like this helps my cravings for sugar/carbs but then makes me feel ill Sad so I end up putting the carbs back in and up they creep again. I did look at my nutrition splits last night in MFP and yes the “fats” proportion was high because I’d reduced carbs, but I’m not eating high fat foods because I can’t eat them, Hmm it’s mostly meat and eggs, salad and fruit. I will track and note symptoms as I really want to crack this and lose some flipping weight. I’ve successfully lost 3st in the past, then over 5yrs 2st has crept back on ironically back to the weight I’ve been for years, it’s almost like your body just resets it’s self..

Ohyesiam · 19/06/2019 16:27

Ooh today is hard.
I’m
Premenstrual( yes at 53, why???) and struggling after a really bad nights sleep last night.
I decided to stay on plan but abandon calories, and so far I’m on about 1500.
The up sides are I’m still logging it all on MFP, where previously I’ve had an all it nothing helter skelter approach. And I did a good intense gym class today and my abs are really feeling it, which I take (?perverse) pleasure in.

Ooh and I think I’ve found my wedding dress! I love it and I look quite slim in it!! Not bad for just over 13 stone.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/06/2019 17:40

Ohyes amazing, what's it like?? I know what you mean about the perverse pleasure In aching after working out.

I've had a good day, I was 2lb down this morning which was good As I did eat rather a lot yesterday. My dinner today was so delicious- a minted lamb burger, cauli rice with peppers, tomato, garlic, and a blob of houmous. Tasty!

I'll be closing the kitchen very soon on 1153 cals, 63 g carbs, 21k steps (10k was a run) and today's been:
Alcohol free ✔️
Dairy free✔️
Sugar free ✔️

I've found my groove with the dairy free now, I haven't eaten any cheese since Saturday which is absolutely unheard of, plus no yogurt or milk. I don't even really miss it. I was just in such a habit of just adding it to pretty much every meal, like a garnish, plus snacking on it and not weighing it and god knows how many calories it was adding up to! I was worried I'd feel hungry without the fat content but I really haven't.

OP posts:
Justalittlebitfurther · 20/06/2019 07:37

Ohyes - well done for finding your dress. Is it traditional or unusual?

I’m a bit confused as I am see to be stuck at a particular weight - I’ve lost exactly a stone but I can’t seem to loose anymore. I have been out but I’ve stuck to no carb options. Is it because I lost so well the first two weeks? Am I not eating enough? I am only two and a half weeks in but it’s demoralising when I’m trying so hard!

FurForksSake · 20/06/2019 09:39

I am also totally stuck. I am going to trust the diet and that it will come off and try drinking more. I am pre-menstral and craving carbs and chocolate and feel massively bloated. Hoping when that goes my weight will shift.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/06/2019 11:24

Just and fur plateaus are quite common on this diet, usually in around 2-3 weeks in- I think as a result of such quick losses in the first few weeks. A few things you can do: exercise or mix up your exercise routine; drink more water; eat more fat/protein; try a veggie day; have a few really strict low carb days; change your eating window times.

Or just stick it out. Its very common and yes it can be frustrating because you're doing all the right things. Have you done your measurements? I found if I had a plateau, often my body shape was changing/losing inches

OP posts:
FurForksSake · 20/06/2019 13:05

I had two poached eggs, some smoked salmon and a big salad dressed with EVOO and lemon for lunch.

Doing sea bass, asparagus and salad for dinner, no idea quite what to do with it!

We are going to a wedding in 5 weeks and I tried on dresses yesterday, still depressingly bigger than I want to be. But, I’ve booked a cut and colour for next week so at least that’ll look nice!

Ohyesiam · 20/06/2019 13:17

Justalittlebitfurther

You are not alone this WOE is notorious for plateau, often at week 3 or 4. If you look back through these threads where people share their weekly loses you’ll see that is often the case.
You will get a “ whoosh” soon. How much wAter are you drinking? Try for 3 litres, it’s what got my weight loss on the road again.
And as for my wedding dress, it’s not traditional, and it’s like a summers day! bear you were asking about it too. I might get brave enough to post a picture.

FurForksSake · 20/06/2019 13:28

Because I love seeing photos… I offer you a photo of me in the dress I think I will wear to the wedding in 5 weeks. Hoping it will be a bit looser by then!
