Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Has anyone tried alternate day 24 hour fasting?

I’m thinking of trying this, but can’t find anything about it online. There are lots of intermittent fasting advice but not for 24 hours; so fasting from dinner time one day till dinner time the next day. Then a day off till dinner the next day.

I think I’d find this easier than doing 5:2 / 4:3 with whole day fasts. I’d still be having 500 cals and not stuffing my face at dinner or on NFDs.

Even as a temporary measure maybe till I think I can manage proper fasting.

Any advice appreciated Smile.

I am doing ADF - alternate day fasting but not sure if that’s what you mean? I basically have 500 cals one day (usually just one meal in the evening) then normal day the next day - but I also restrict my eating window on my eat days to 8 hours so only eat between 12 - 8 pm then 500 cals the next day etc etc.

Essentially I fast for 24 hours then eat a 500 or less meal then fast for 16 hours and eat normally for 8 hours. Similar to 5:2 but just more fast days and more restrictions on eat days (because of the time restriction).

Thanks @twinkle68.

That sounds a lot harder than what I was thinking! I was planning to do a 24 hour ‘fast’ but with a few hundred calories, (maybe not 500 as that may be too many), and then a normal dinner...

Reading that back it’s not really fasting is it 😂.

Hmmmm, maybe I should try a different plan.

Yeah that sounds more like just calorie restriction which is fine and will help you lose weight but you won’t get the “benefits” of fasting really. Fasting does sound scary but it really isn’t as hard as you think. I get through it by drinking loads of water with a bit of sugar free squash sometimes. The hunger pangs really don’t last long and you can just tell yourself you are going to east in a few hours. Coffee is a good appetite suppressant too so a few cups of coffee may help.

The great thing I’ve found with fasting is it changes the way you view food, it’s become fuel for me. I know that what I eat has to sustain me for 24 hours so I make sure that the calories I eat are good calories. I do have chocolate and crap sometimes but on the whole I eat lots of lean protein and vegetables as that sustains me far longer than high sugar carby foods.

Sounds like your describing the Omad diet, fast for at least 23 hours (longer if you want) , one hour eating window.

I've been doing this for the last couple of weeks and feel great. There's some good Facebook support groups too

@Inchstonesbeatmilestones

Thanks! I’ll look into the Omad diet.

I was on a intermittent fasting fb page and a few people were doing 24hr+ fasts.

Yeah I used to do this. I would just eat at 8.30 when I got in from work. I think it depends on the person as to whether you can do it or not, I can easily because my job distracts me and I don't feel hungry.

As soon as I got pregnant though I couldn't even manage 4 hours ha
