Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Can someone explain to me...

5:2 was invented by a TV doctor after he made a piece about intermittent fasting .
Fasting has many health effects, and there are several way to obtain similar health effect without a complete fast. The original Fast-mimicking diet was created by Valter Longo , featured in the tv piece, then there is the 5:2 , and other formulas. Luigi Fontana is another of the doctor seen in the documentary and he promotes Calorie restriction all life long.

In the 5:2, you eat normally for 5 days and go very low cal for 2 .

The main difference I guess, is what you eat on the normal day, as the doctors tend to favour real food, whole grains, high vegetables, no processed food (bacon included), The normal British food with fried food isn;t part of normal.

5:2 is more a weightloss program whereas the original fasting is more for cancer prevention and longevity.
