5:2 while breastfeeding?

Has anyone done this or does anyone have any tips for doing this please?

I’m currently breastfeeding my 3 and a half mo, but also need to lose some weight.

I’m planning to fast on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but adjusting the calories so that I have 1000 on a fast day to begin with. I’m also planning to cut down on carbs, especially the ‘bad’ ones, (sugar, white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes).

Also considering doing 16:8 as well.

Any advice much appreciated.

I’ve been doing 5:2 for 4 weeks and am breastfeeding my 15 month old. She still feeds a lot so I was worried about milk being affected but I don’t think it has. I think the key is to be sensible. Stick to 1000 calories on a fast day because milk is still your baby’s only source of food. You need to maintain supply and it exhausting making milk. Also make sure you drink a lot of water. I find I get very thirsty. 1000 is a decent allowance so I would recommend spreading the calories between 3 meals. Definitely no snacking though and make sure it’s good quality protein and vitamin dense food. When I was breastfeeding a lot at the beginning I got shaky if I didn’t eat regularly so just be careful of that and adjust things if you need to.

Thanks for posting @FriendlyGhost!

That’s good to hear it’s working for you with feeding. I am going to do 16:8 tomorrow and see how that goes to begin with. If I manage to stick to it for a week with no problems, I’ll start 5:2 the week after next.

I've just started as well and had my first fast day yesterday. I'm going go for 500 calories on fast days but increase it if I can't cope. I found the first fast day tougher than I thought but once I'd eaten dinner I felt completely normal and forgot I was fasting. My little one is 17 months so he's not feeding so frequently but I do worry if I should be going as low as 500?

I tried 5:2 while BF but only managed to sustain it for about 2 weeks. I just got so so so tired and grumpy on my fast days. I'm not sure if it was my grumpiness or any actual physical changes to my let down/milk supply but my baby was extra fractious and slow to settle on my fast days. Usually he'd just take a quick, full BF and nod off of an evening but on fasting days he'd take forever to feed and then not settle in the same way

I’m planning to start 16:8 when baby turns 12 months (8 months now). I just get too hungry while BF to do an all day fast.

How do you all cope on long nights where baby is up due to teething, growth spurt, etc? I always get hungry if I’m up a lot overnight.
