All very interesting anyway re T2. And yes, I expect the book examples are extreme.

I did think a target of 1 stone in six weeks would be reasonable with the calorie allowance and the exercise I've added in but I'm really struggling. Weighed myself this morning and I'm the same as I was Saturday. It's massively demotivating and I don't know how long I can keep going with it if I'm not losing any weight.

My fitness pal keeps telling me I'll weigh a stone less etc in 5 weeks but it's just not happening.

bear I do that when I'm cooking the children's dinner. A slice of cheese here, a too big spoonful from the pan to 'taste' etc.

I think I'm going to cut out cheese for the rest of the week. I think I always add more than I write down and I'm bad for slicing a bit off when cooking. Mind you, a slice of cheese shouldn't be the difference between losing a few lbs and nothing!

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 19/09/2017 06:40

That's great ramsey!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/09/2017 06:50

Ramsey that's fab! Well done. It really gives you a boost when people notice doesn't it?

I fell off the wagon spectacularly last night. Watching secret eaters, of all things, and eating fecking Cadbury heroes- I knew those delicious little bastards chocolates would get me in the end. Now feel crappy today.

I really should go for my run but I've been struggling to fit it in as ds has been very clingy and snotty. Will do it this morning.
I'm still avoiding the scales, so no idea if I've lost or gained either!

Have a good day everyone!

bear snap!Except it was chocolate cake for me rather than Heroes. tbh I think this week is going to have to be about damage limitation. I'm tired, stressed and frustrated with BSD. I want to eat all the carbs and all the calories am currently eating maltesers
If I can get to the end of the week without putting on weight I'll consider it an achievement. [grumpy smiley if there was one]

purpleviolet1 · 19/09/2017 16:37

Hi all,

DH and I started yesterday as per planned. Well I say DH 'and I' but I'm only really joining him for dinner if that. With 6 month old ds and my own health being not too great I'm not going to stress myself anymore than I already have but just generally try to eat better and support him by making his meals and eating the same thing for dinner. He has enjoyed all his meals so far - all from the BSD recipe book so that's a plus.

We took measurements last night but don't have scales unfortunately.

SpaghettiAlphabetti · 19/09/2017 22:53

All done on 1026 which included two small glasses of red wine when catching up with a friend.

yumyumpoppycat · 19/09/2017 23:13

Purple, it's really lovely that you are on here to support your dh!

Long termers I think we need a new strategy, we all seem to be having the same issue right now! swap secret eaters for something even worse - mama june not to hot and instead of chocolate (whispers) a crisp sandwich

Shock

what about we have a 3 meals no snacks challenge for a week? Aim for lots of veg and nourishment, if we have to have desert it's either a small glass of wine or a small pudding , with/at the end of a meal. No calorie counting for a week - I am unsure about this myself and up for any better ideas!

yumyumpoppycat · 19/09/2017 23:15

Well done spaghetti - that is excellent to have done some socialising and kept on track.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 06:44

That sounds like a plan yumyum

I went totally off the rails yesterday, ate loads of crap. Literally loads. I'm too ashamed to write it down here. But it was baaaaad. It was definite comfort eating, 'shoving thoughts down and burying them' eating, but I felt yuck doing it, and feel worse today.

So I'm with you yumyum except I need to calorie count too. I can eat too much with a free rein so I'm going to need to still stick to the 800-900 cals.

It's annoying, I had the best week I've had in a while last week. Yes, I had days that weren't great, but overall I felt like I was doing everything I should- and lost nothing. This week I've gone the other way, terrible eating, and have gained. Friday is my day 1 week 4 weigh in, and I know I'll be either heavier or the same. It's quite depressing really.

Anyway- onwards!
Drinking a pint of water as I type this. Lots of water needed today. We're having chicken, bacon and cream sauce for dinner which is quite calorific, so lunch probably a salad. I need to cut the carbs right back today and deal with the detox as I've been having more this week that is really acceptable. And just keep on keeping on I guess. I agree that I feel a bit tired of BSD right now, but I can't see me ever switching back to a low fat plan, so this has to be the way.

Nakedavenger74 · 20/09/2017 08:58

Any ideas for low calorie, low carb snacks for the terminally disorganised?

This seems to be where I go off the rails. No breakfast (not hungry till lunch) then a salad or a low carb soup. The afternoon is then a battle of wills against my mind to devour anything in sight! I'm also the same after my yoga class (5.30 to 7) before I have dinner at 8.

I cannot be trusted with nuts, fruit (too carby anyway for me) or cheese. I don't like eggs by themselves.

Anyone have any low cal/ carb snacks, preferably on the crunchy side ( I crave crunch) that are their go to when they just have to eat something?

Thanks!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 09:10

Naked if you have the calories to 'spare' then the advice is probably to use them in your lunch. Something protein or high fat ideally (eg add half an avocado or a chicken breast to your salad) which will be more substantial and keep you full for longer. I find the issue with soup particularly is that a) it's quite high carb if it's a veg soup even if they are allowed veg, and b) like with a smoothie, the fibre content is less effective as you've cooked and blended the veg.

If it was me I would add for example some crumbled feta into a soup or salad, or have some full fat Greek (you can buy 125g pots in list supermarkets) as part of my meal, rather than eat those calories at 3pm as a 'snack'. In theory the longer you can fast, the better your insulin control and your weightloss. If you split one meal into a meal and a snack you will have 2 opportunities for insulin to be released, and effectively halve your fat burning time.

Nakedavenger74 · 20/09/2017 09:27

Thanks @thenewaveragebear1983 good points. It's home made soup crammed with leeks and brocolli never potatoes but I can see how it can be carby. Salads are usually leaves and tuna with a dollop of mayo. I get your point about a bit more protein in the lunch though. Maybe an egg.

Totally forgot the Greek yoghurt thing. I guess a couple of seeds would be fine too for that elusive crunch? I supposed a chew on a celery stick might cull that craving.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 09:38

It's not that it's excessively carby (the soup) it's that the 'souping' process changes the absorption of those carbs, and it's quickly digested. The ingredients in themselves are good. The whole broccoli will always be a 'better' choice than the broccoli soup. Greek yog is a great choice, you could use something like chia seeds for extra fibre too if you are getting hungry mid afternoon. I find nuts way too Moreish but I do love them in yogurt. Or frozen cherries, slightly defrosted.

As a rule of thumb, carbs will make you more hungry than either protein or fat, but I get what you say about the crunch! Protein/ fat isn't often crunchy. You could make Parmesan crisps?

OP posts:
Nakedavenger74 · 20/09/2017 10:15

Thanks bear. Super useful!

Yes I realised a few days ago that protein tends to be soft or chewy. Foods that have the crunch are bad brown foods (crisps, toast, crackers). I miss crunchy things terribly and crave really badly hence why I have to steer clear of nuts. I can't limit myself to 6 almonds, as you say they are beyond moreish!

Nakedavenger74 · 20/09/2017 10:17

Actually DP has perfected roasted sprouts and kale that give a bit of crunch (or rather shatter). Delicious

Flightywoman · 20/09/2017 11:48

I'm struggling SO much at the moment.

Last night I was killing time while daughter was at Brownies and I got the shakes so badly I thought I was going to faint. It was hard being clear-brained enough to drive home and then I just FELL into the fridge.

The main problems were a wrap, and then some chocolate. I mean, it could have been worse I suppose, but I want baked potatoes so much, and I am not losing on 800 calories now. I'm just not.

I'm so low about it all. A few years ago I was running 3-4 times a week and eating 1200-1500 a day and I STILL didn't lose weight and yet my GP seems to put it down to 'fatitis' so is no help at all.

I don't know where to go with this.

Oblomov17 · 20/09/2017 12:19

Oh dear. I am with you all. Seriously struggling.
Also craving crunchy foods.

My meals have been fab : courgette and meatballs, salad and chicken kebabs, Roasted peppers with feta, (and yes that saltiness IS helping), Cauliflower curry, steak and mushrooms.

But the hula hoops, milky way crispy rolls, classic chocolate biscuits......

Not helping.

I don't know what to suggest for us all.

Flightywoman · 20/09/2017 12:48

Over 2000 calories yesterday Sad
There was a lot I forgot till I added it all in.

sigh

APlaceOnTheCouch · 20/09/2017 14:58

naked when I was being good on BSD, for an afternoon snack, I'd have sugar snap peas or mange tout with salt, pepper, chilli flakes.
I'm still struggling here. Maybe I need to check back my old food diaries from when I started and follow them.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 15:47

Sorry to hear so many of us are struggling right now. I don't know what to suggest really. For me, it's simply that I decided to eat something I shouldn't, and then it opened the floodgates; I've been ok today. Kept busy with loads of housework, and had a glass of water every time I even thought about eating something. That's not sustainable long term though, it requires quite a lot of mental energy to keep reminding myself. While the boy had his lunch I cooked tonight's tea rather than picked at bits, and then ate mine afterwards in peace so I could actually appreciate it. That seemed to help.

Flighty you've done so well. Is this your second round? Did you have a break between? The 800 calories is supposed to be only 8 weeks, and if I recall, you really did do 800 a day, so perhaps you do need to up your calories for a few weeks? With regards to the jacket potatoes- could you do some sort of loaded skins- scoop the potato out and stuff it with bacon and cheese, or even an egg and cheese? That way you'd get the potato taste but much less carby and loads of fibre in the skins?

Oblomov do you think the pressure of looking good on your holiday is actually making you go too far the other way? If your meals are great, but then you're eating extra treats, is there any way you could remove those things from the house so you're not tempted? It's amazing how 800 calories can last a whole day when we're focused, but also that they can dissapear in seconds when that feeding frenzy takes over. I ate 100s of calories in literally minutes last night.

Place sorry to hear you're struggling too. I liked your idea of a no count week- would that help you do you think? For me, it might help me maintain bug I don't think I would lose because my appetite is still so massive I can eat a lot of calories on a no count day. I do think a break from constantly thinking about food could help me though- do you find that you're always thinking about food??? Would batch cooking and freezing a week's worth for lunches and dinners help? Have a 'no think' week instead of a 'no count' week?

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 15:48

Oh place just realised it wasn't you who suggested the no count plan! Sorry!

OP posts:
yumyumpoppycat · 20/09/2017 17:15

Well discount my suggestion as I did not stick to my plan at all today!! What the heck is going on. Is it the time of year maybe? I think dropping snacks is something I really NEED to do though as a lifestyle change.

Flighty would it be worth seeing a different GP? Good idea from newaverage to swap a jacket potato for potato skins - these aren't too high in cals (113) as very small and prob processed as anything but might hit the spot in an otherwise healthy meal www.waitrose.com/shop/DisplayProductFlyout?productId=127699 .

thenewaveragebear1983 · 20/09/2017 17:45

Just had the nicest dinner- I made bolognese for the kids, and used the same mince, layered it up with sliced aubergine, (2 layers) and on the tip did a mixture of soured cream mixed with grated cheese and baked it. A bit like a moussaka/lasagne - delicious comfort food. Excuse the pic, I overcooked it because I love the crispy bits!

It's so hard to break the snacking habit isn't it? I'm a total boredom snacker, I'll wander into the kitchen and suddenly end up in the cupboards. Even 'allowed' foods adds up very quickly, probably more so actually as everything is so high in fat.

Thanks everyone - you are supportive gang!

Bear - I think I'm on my second round. I did the initial stint of around 11 weeks then had a kind of break while on holiday - didn't go completely back to old habits but drank a lot and did eat chips once or twice, and some bread. And put on 8 lbs or so.

The problem is that as soon as I add any carbs again, I gain - it doesn't seem to matter what I do in relation to staying within VLC, if there's a potato then I gain - I appear to be majorly carb-sensitive. And I really don't want to be! I had exactly the same problem with doing the Harcombe diet, as soon as I step off phase 1 I gain.

And re: the GP, our practice has lost 4 GPs in the last 18 months so we are down to one and a locum AFAIK, so the options are very limited. Sad

I am going to keep trying but allow myself a leeway of going to 1000-1200 if I really need to, and see where that takes me. I'll give it a couple of weeks, but if it doesn't work I shall have to reconsider.

I'm not diabetic, or pre-diabetic so I should be able to have a small amount of pasta, rice or a potato sometimes.

I just want to be 'normal'. To be able to eat something and not have to agonise about it and then physically and emotionally pay for it with weeks of not having it again.

Oblomov17 · 20/09/2017 20:11

Dh has lost 7 lbs in a week.
He has been religious. Eating the same meals as me, but Not eating any cheaty chocolate.
