I have Valter Longo's book and it explains very well the aim is not weightless but cell repair.
If you buy his book, you still have the details of the Fasting Mimicking Diet. It also involves fasting for quite a longer time than the 5:2, includes also a longer night fasting. He also really stresses the importance of doing it under medical supervision and with a nutritionist assistance.

I am waiting for a quiet weekend when I am not doing any driving to try it. Starting the Friday morning after breakfast and finishing it on the Monday morning , so 68 hours more or less. I will not buy the sachet as there are not yet available for patient purchase yet in Australia so I will follow the book with some adjustment .

antimatter · 02/06/2017 22:34

King which book do you have in mind?

KingIrving · 11/06/2017 09:36

Sorry, just saw your post.
Valter Longo's book www.amazon.com/dieta-della-longevit%C3%A0-rivoluzionato-invecchiamento-ebook/dp/B01FXVJDIU/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21 in Italian or spanish and German www.amazon.com/Books-Valter-Longo/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Abooks%2Cp_27%3AValter%20Longo&tag=mumsnetforum-21

The book is a collection of medical research on the fasting mimicking diet and details how it should be done: for 4 days with a transition day before and after, so essentially 6 days.

It is not so much about weight loss, but health and disease prevention, from cancer to Alzheimer. The fasting diet and the research behind it only represents half his book , The second half is about eating for longevity. It is a calorie restricted diet, mostly vegan with 3 meals including fish/shellfish and a very tiny amount of cheese ( 5g or 20 gram) of cheese, fats from nuts, lots of dark leafed vegetables.

I'll wait for the English version. Thanks for your explanation.

I have just started day one of this today. Has anyone else tried it?

Lumene · 22/02/2019 08:57

Just to update on how I got on with Prolon. Lost 4 or 5lbs and found it reset the way I eat quite a bit so have kept the loss off and added to it without really trying. It feels like I just want to eat healthier, although this has worn off a bit over time. Now 8lbs down on where I was pre Christmas. Hoping to do another cycle of Prolon again soon.

Lumene · 09/05/2019 15:45

Another round, another few lbs down. Now getting on for a stone in weight loss over 5 months. I find the week a challenge but it’s only a week so still doable.

LiliesAndChocolate · 12/05/2019 06:17

What do you eat in a day while on prolon

Lumene · 12/05/2019 20:13

A breakfast bar with nuts and honey. Soup for lunch and dinner. Vitamin and omega oil supplements. Snacks include olives (lovely but not many), small coco crisp bar which is delicious and kale crisp things that I initially liked but now make me feel sick. You drink water, an energy drink thing and herbal tea with no caffeine.

The food is surprisingly palatable but I am a bit sick of some of the soups by this point. The olives Choco crisps and some other soups I look forward to.

LiliesAndChocolate · 12/05/2019 20:48

Thanks.
Do you do it on your own or under the supervision of a health practitioner?
Here in Australia, a 5day box is over 300$ (roughy 150 pounds) and you can't order it yourself, a doctor has to do it.
Do you do it for weight loss or health purpose? How do you feel during the day?

Lumene · 13/05/2019 20:31

You are encouraged to do it under supervision and/or to have a chat with a Prolon nurse prior to embarking.

It costs similar here and the expense is the main downside. I did manage to get some discount via offers but it still ain’t cheap.

I am doing it mainly for weight loss, but that for health reasons as I want to be back to a healthier weight. I like the idea of the health benefits suggested by the clinical research of autophagy and stem cell rejuvenation etc as a bonus but wouldn’t have thought to do it for that.

Basically I want a way to lose visceral fat and keep it off and this seems to work well for me. Other diets I yo yo and this also seems to naturally make me eat more healthily. I wouldn’t do a water fast outside of a professional retreat/clinic setting and don’t have the lifestyle to do that.

During the day I feel functional but have limited energy so have to use it wisely. First day is fine, third day is the worst. I get spurts of energy and focus. First round I got an awful headache most days but since then that hasn’t been an issue.

LiliesAndChocolate · 13/05/2019 20:45

Very interesting! Thank you for sharing!
I would do it for health purpose. I have a genetic condition called NF1 which has a 60% lifetime risk of cancer with unfavourable prognosis in case of cancer. According to Valter Longo, I should do the FMD once a month. I tend to follow the dietary recommendations from the book, but haven't done the fast for 5 days yet, as I am on the light side (BMI 19) . I have had a very low food intake for 3 days but was feeling quite unwell.

Lumene · 23/08/2019 00:09

Hey Lilies did you end up trying Prolon? Or if not how is following the book going?

annabelindajane · 14/10/2019 13:37

Have just started day 1 of this - got box 60 pc off - hoping it will kick start an ongoing fat loss

annabelindajane · 21/10/2019 14:55

Finished this and lost just over a kg - only about 3 kgs overweight -

Best not done if a lot of activity and was ready for real food by day 6 which funnily enough didn’t taste as amazing as I thought it would . Had huge energy surge and feel head is clearer . Will keep to smaller amounts now to lose 2 kgs . Will do again in 6 months time

annabelindajane · 21/10/2019 14:56

Had no headaches or constipation which was goodp

Lumene · 04/11/2019 17:14

Wow how did you get 60% off @annabelindajane

annabelindajane · 04/11/2019 18:02

It was last January- I got an email with the offer. I had been in touch with them previously with various questions. The box had only a few months of “in date “ on it so maybe that’s why . However everything was in perfect condition. So impressed with after effects I’ve got one for my husband who has some immune issues . It had £50 off.

annabelindajane · 04/11/2019 18:05

If you get book I think you could make it all yourself . Just so easy to have it prepped . Hated the Kale crackers at end of week .

Lumene · 04/11/2019 19:06

Thanks! I got £50 a box this time but 60% is a great deal!

I also hate the kale crackers by the end of it. But love love love the olives.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 10/11/2019 18:38

I’m just embarking on this. Aside food. Mainly for health reasons. Wouldn’t mind losing a couple pounds.

I’m already shattered

Lumene · 07/12/2019 10:16

How did you get on @Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow

I get really tired too, I just sleep early and long.
