blood sugar diet thread 5

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

I wouldn't worry too much - my day started with fresh bread from the bread machine and ended with fish pie followed by bananas and ice cream (the custard was out of date!). I blame the in-laws and possibly a complete lack of willpower

The difference for me this time is that usually I'd decide to give up on the diet if I have a bad day. Whereas this time I see it as a blip and get back on it the next day - which is what maintenance will be anyway. Write off today and have a better tomorrow!

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 13/11/2016 08:00

Good good, that's the spirit :)

I stayed the same today. I was expecting a smidge of a gain after going off piste, so very happy with that :) :)

coulditbeforever · 13/11/2016 09:46

Today is the end of my first week and I'm down by 9.5 lbs. I have to say I have not done much exercise, but I have stuck to 800-900 Cals per day.

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 13/11/2016 09:59

Well done couldit!

CharlieChipmunk · 13/11/2016 19:43

Well done all

Im a poster on here but I've name changed as I've been doing for the past ten years Grin

Well I've been impeccable all week, stuck to 800 calories a day give or take the odd fifty. And I'm due for week three weigh in tomorrow. Sadly early indicators are that it'll be a stay the same

Whyyyyyyy?? I have lost 13lbs in the past two weeks and I don't know why I've not lost this week

APlaceOnTheCouch · 13/11/2016 20:39

Charlie there are lulls on BSD. We don't know why but we've all had weeks where we haven't lost. Sometimes you lose inches when you aren't losing weight. Don't be disheartened. Flowers

coulditbeforever · 13/11/2016 20:54

Thanks Beyond and Thanks for the post Place on the couch as I will keep this in mind too.
Have a good week this next week everyone Smile

diamantegal · 13/11/2016 21:14

Well I'm in Poland and let's just say the food is not compatible with low calories and low-carbing! I had veal steaks with mushroom and cream sauce for dinner and just ignored the potatoes - will have gone way over on calories, but I'm hoping the lack of carbs will have done some good. If I ignore the red wine...

Charlie, my weight loss fluctuates hugely - I went from 10st 5lbs on Friday to 10st 9lbs on Saturday. Maybe you just weighed yourself on the wrong day? I tend to do it daily, then I can see the trend and it means any blips don't worry me as much.

CharlieChipmunk · 13/11/2016 21:57

Diamanté - I'm a daily weigher too although not sure it does me any good! Im hopeful for a Lb maybe! I know I've stuck to it and my clothes feel better.

I tell you what I did do differently this week though! I ate bread on four days . I say 'bread' - its the low carb lavash bread which is only 120 cals for a huge wrap or 60 cals for half so even with toppings or fillings, it comes in at 200 cals or less each time

yumyumpoppycat · 14/11/2016 07:52

Well done coulditbe

Charlie I dont really understand this but if you had been properly low carbing then introduced the lavash bread it could be to do with glycogen stores (whatever they are) emptying and then refilling with some water this week and that this is hiding actual fat loss which may have happened...so if you keep to the 800 this week even with the lavash you should lose weight - prob not as much as in the first 2 weeks (the first 2 weeks bring the most steady loss for most people however a lot of it is water weight) and from now on a lot of the weightloss is hopefully actual fat rather than water so a bigger victory. You are also getting to the weeks where people can find they feel smaller and clothes feel looser but the scale stays the same which is annoying but shows fat loss is still happening.

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 14/11/2016 07:58

I weigh daily too. Stayed the same again here today.
Just having my muesli, almond milk and green tea. I realise relying on muesli everyday is not ideal, but it's working for me so far so not gonna mess with it til I need to start adding tweaks Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 14/11/2016 08:02

Don't know how accurate it is but this weightloss planner is quite fun. You can put in a date and weight and it tells you how many calories you can eat to get there. www.supertracker.usda.gov/bwp/index.html

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/11/2016 08:10

yum I just tried that website. It said I should eat 1800 cals to maintain Shock I think I must have made a mistake somewhere Grin

yumyumpoppycat · 14/11/2016 09:10

hmmmm it has told me I will get to me goal for christmas on 1400 a day. Not sure I am brave enought to test the theory! I wonder what would happen if I did 800 twice a week 1400 4 times 2000 once a week?

Oblomov16 · 14/11/2016 12:53

I only weigh once a week. Mosley did daily, I think. but, I prefer to wait, because I need to see a big difference, to motivate me. I am 2lbs down, for the last week. 5 lbs more is my next target, to get to the next stone down. when the scales change from one stone to the lower one. I was there in April and need to get there again.

Beyond, this weekend, I did your link to the whole roasted cauliflower with mustard powder and garlic and it was totally delicious.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 14/11/2016 15:47

I weigh daily but I'm very conscious of making sure the scales are in the same place and of trying to weigh at the same time of day, etc. tbh it makes me more aware of my menu choices when I see the scale creeping up or down.

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 14/11/2016 16:02

My version of the turkey thingy, with chickpeas and slightly burnt well done aubergine

Today's food was rubbish as I was busy

Courgetti, creme fraiche and goats cheese

Total of 800 calories

yumyumpoppycat · 14/11/2016 23:21

Is a stone in 3 weeks the thread record?

OP posts:
CharlieChipmunk · 15/11/2016 07:02

Thanks for the glycogen explanation Yum. Makes sense. I'm still going to eat the bread but not four days on the trot.

I know a stone in three weeks sounds quite good but it'll slow down a bit for me now. Which is a shame as I'm 19lbs away from my overall target. I think the chances of doing this before Christmas aren't high but it's what I'm aiming for so I'll give it a go.

Anyone cooked courgetti before? I think I boiled it for too long

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 15/11/2016 08:47

I have had my random weight loss period show up this morning. I have a mirena - I don't have periods, apart from when I'm losing weight and then they randomly appear!

Down 0.2 lb today, 12.4lbs total
