Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

If I'm particularly hungry, I might have a second egg

coulditbeforever · 10/11/2016 11:32

Morning Beyond,
Well done on your weight loss so far Smile

diamantegal · 10/11/2016 12:40

You're very good Beyond - I'd have had the wine as a naughty extra and just not logged it!

Currently munching my way through a lot of lettuce for lunch (with some smoked salmon and hard boiled egg thrown in for flavour!). Tea is going to be another Hairy Dieters dish - harrissa chicken and bulgur wheat salad. Worth digging the books out keepon - they're low calorie rather than low carb but I've managed then within my 50g limit - and they're a lot tastier than most "diet" food.

wow Beyond! Can I be your my fitness pal friend please so I can steal ideas (only half joking).

Had a deliberate higher cal day today with less deliberate pear tart for afters , so will try and have a high veg low carb 800 day tomorrow.

On the topic of books I have just got davina's book as it was in the bookpeople sale with an extra 15% off code too, also only £3.99 on amazon www.amazon.co.uk/d/Books/Davinas-Smart-Carbs-Still-Lose-Weight-Amazing/1409157679/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478803723&sr=8-1&keywords=davina+smart+carbs. Haven't cooked anything yet but all the recipes have cals and fuller nutritional info at the back. Lots of the recipes would work and many of the rest would be ok for maintenance. There is a very interesting looking recipe for chickpea chips.

I have finally got organised, back to batch cooking:

M Mosley's roasted aubergine, with turkey mince, carrots, onion, and I added some cannelloni beans, just because, with , cinnamon, cumin, oregano, lots of chilli flakes (I shook the pot and half of it fell inBlush)
Enough for 6 meals / lunches.

Had home cooked gammon with oranges and cloves, one new potato and lots of broccoli for dinner.

I am definitely getting there.

Oh wow oblomov well done! that looks amazing.

Batch cooking looks good! We had the harassed chicken tonight - and very tasty it was too!

Only problem is that in laws are coming tomorrow (and I'm not telling MIL I'm dieting) and then I have to go abroad for work for a week on Sunday (and ditto for my work colleagues). Expectations will be much wine, hotel buffet breakfasts and probably many carbs. I'll do what I can, but may have to suck up w backwards week, and get back on it the week after.

Oblomov16 · 11/11/2016 07:58

Don't worry diamant. Consider it just as 'one week' and enjoy. Plus, even within that one week, you with the mindset you have now, will make different choices: instead of having a full breakfast with 3 slices of white toast and 3 sausages (or was it just me that did that Wink) you can now choose more tomatoes, more bacon, more mushrooms etc.

No one will ever know.

Including mil!!

My mil was totally lovely, and she passed away this summer, and in a couple of weeks we have our family Christmas party ( we have it quite early, because we are a huge family, so we can get everyone there) and it will be the first time we've ever had one without her there )and there is tons of food and puddings and everything there!! )

BeyondReasonablyDoubts · 11/11/2016 08:58

That looks good oblomov. I might grab some turkey mince and aubergine while I'm shopping today... Grin

Down 11.8lbs so far today. Turned down cheesecake, crisps and champagne, and stuck to my red wine last night Halo

yumyumpoppycat · 11/11/2016 11:00

Beyond you are a weightloss machine ;)

Flowers oblomov, your family sounds lovely.

Diamental defo use it as a break from calorie counting and enjoy rather than feel guilty, maybe use it as an opportunity to try and nourish your body with good food and eat as well as pos within whats available.

Am making davinas spanish chicken in the slow cooker now and smelling yum. Had smoked salmon baby leaves and houmus for breakfast (and a free latte at waitrose ;) )

I don't know what it is - someone must have swapped my metabolism with a fit persons!!

I did buy turkey mince and aubergines Grin

diamantegal · 11/11/2016 14:19

I want Beyond 's weight loss! Although I do think you win the award for sticking closest to the plan - maybe a lesson there!

Agreed, I'm not going to beat myself up over next week, equally I'm not going to go mad - that's what got me here in the first place, so I'll treat it as more of a maintenance approach and see how that goes. I'm 6.5lbs down after nearly two weeks, so as long as I keep some of that off, I'll be happy.

coulditbeforever · 11/11/2016 16:00

Can I ask is anyone doing any of the exercises from the book or otherwise?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 11/11/2016 17:27

coulditbe I didn't do the exercises from the book. I just upped my walking.

Oblomov your family Christmas party sounds lovely Flowers

yumyumpoppycat · 11/11/2016 18:37

I actually exercised less during the first 8 weeks as wanted to focus on the diet, I did this 22 minute HIIT/ bootcamp workout from time to time prob 3 times a week not sure. I walk a fair bit but dont log etc.

Exercise is difficult for me (I can't remember if I already mentioned this here?) so I'm working on getting a reasonable amount of steps this week and hoping to add in some Pilates next week

yumyumpoppycat · 12/11/2016 17:14

Sounds good Beyond. Don't worry its 80% diet and you are doing amazingly. What types of exercise are ok - one of the main things to include are resistance/ weights as this is to protect muscle which get's lost during weightloss. There are benefits with exercise too but don't let it side track you if its difficult.

:)

Having an off day today, it had to happen eventually. DH and the kids have chip shop chips for dinner. However I compromised, have just 100g of chips and cooked some fish at home to go with them, and my still come in at under 1000.
