blood sugar diet thread 5

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

Beautiful cat diamentgal Sad Flowers

diamantegal · 28/12/2016 19:24

Thanks both. It's better every day although I still keep expecting him to walk in and jump on my lap...

Anyway, in other news we spent today at the zoo so much walking - and a very cute red panda which I'm thinking of adopting as a cat replacement. Offset by the fact we've just had a tea of leftover M&S canapés, washed down with sparkling wine. But hopefully it's net neutral!

And my Good Food magazine arrived today with lots of diet friendly recipes so starting to make a New Year New Start shopping list - scrambled eggs with feta, chilli and spinach lined up as breakfast on the 1st!

Lovetunnocks · 30/12/2016 09:40

diamantegal - so sorry about your cat, he looks lovely. Sad

Do you mind if I join? I'm not pre-diabetic but I had gestational diabetes twelve years ago which puts me at risk, plus I am very overweight (especially around my middle!). But if I'm honest my motivation is vanity - I simply cannot bear the thought of being any fatter. I've got more than 50 lbs to lose and every diet I've tried lately has failed so this is my last hope!

I've been doing a version of the diet without knowing it since mid-December (eating 800 cals on two days, and 1200 on the other five). I did this up until Christmas and lost 6lbs in ten days which is amazing because I normally lose very slowly. I put two of those pounds back on again over Christmas so got back on the wagon yesterday. I had the BS book on the shelf and have now read it properly and am committing to my first 8 week cycle. Was hungry yesterday but that was because I was winging it a bit, today I've got my meals planned and pre-counted in advance. Having a ploughman's for lunch, then courgetti with smoked salmon and creme fraiche for dinner. I had devilled eggs for breakfast and am absolutely stuffed!!!!

pklme · 30/12/2016 09:51

Can't make 'watch' work, so place marking for a proper look later.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 30/12/2016 10:28

Morning all. It's been a high calorie week for me and still another 2 celebrations to go! Roll on January (literally!)
I'm going to go back to the book and plan my meals properly ready to start on Monday.
Welcome new starters!! I feel like a new starter myself tbh, I have no doubt gained several pounds over Christmas but I'm really looking forward to getting back on it! Happy new year everyone

APlaceOnTheCouch · 30/12/2016 15:21

'roll on January'
That sounds about right for me too.
I've tried to up my walking but not enough to counter all the carbs and alcohol which sounds like a BSD version of 'cigarettes and alcohol' Grin
We're away for NYE then back home for a few days, then away again. I genuinely have no idea what weight or size I will be by the time Jan 9th comes round, and I'm back into my normal routine.
I hope you all have a lovely New Year Wine

Papercaper · 01/01/2017 08:52

Do you mind if I join this thread? I have a couple of stone to lose, maybe three stone. Is it realistic to lose a stone in a month on this diet? I'm hoping to make quite a big difference quite quickly. Thank you.

Lovetunnocks · 01/01/2017 13:43

Hi Paper - I'm a newbie but if you stick to it apparently you will lose between 10-15% of your body weight in 8 weeks. So depending on your starting weight a stone could be doable in a month. There's a facebook page called 8 week blood sugar diet support group and lots of people this morning posting about the results they had last year.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 01/01/2017 14:36

Hi paper and welcome! I lost 22lb in my first 8 weeks on BSD and another 8 or so after that. I think it's totally possible if you really stick to it.

Weighed myself this morning and I'm 12.5.5 which means I've regained about a stone of what I lost (but that is since July)- so I'm really going to try for a good 8 weeks stint, starting from tomorrow. I'm going to do a menu plan this evening once the dc are in bed and do a big shop tomorrow morning.
Currently assessing the leftovers situation, I 've just binned all the dips and snack rubbish and only kept the unopened things and the kids stuff. Found a pack of mixed nuts which will be my breakfasts this week with yoghurt. Making ham and lentil soup later with what's left of the new year gammon, and I'm going to have a stock take in the freezer too. We really need to cut down financially this year as we have bought a 'project house' so it will require careful planning if meals.

Happy new year everyone- I can't wait to get back on it to be honest and get that lovely BSD motivation, energy and clear head back!

APlaceOnTheCouch · 01/01/2017 20:39

Welcome paper . I lost 11lbs in the first 8 weeks and that included going on holiday (which meant I was a bit lax).
I'm still avoiding the scales tbh.
bear your soup and nuts plan sounds fab.

diamantegal · 01/01/2017 22:50

Hi paper, tunnocks and any other lurking newbies - come and say hello!

As the others said, quick weight loss is eminently achievable - if you stick to the plan. And it is quite hardcore. I started at a bad time because of work engagements and Christmas, but I lost 8lbs in the first two weeks and have kept half of that off despite Christmas.

I'm like you bear, I'm almost looking forward to being back on it. Am having a gentle start this week so may go over the calories but will stick to the principles (still have Christmas cheese to finish!) and then calorie count next week

notsoold · 01/01/2017 23:52

Hello all....
Back for another 8 weeks if you all allow me in please? Starting from today or tomorrow if matches everyone weigh in.
I still need to lose another 3 stones according to gp but happy and very happy if I lost another 2 stones.
So 8 weeks here I come....
Back to read the whole thread....

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2017 09:03

Hi notso welcome back!
I've braved the scales, 173 and s bit pounds (12.5 ish) so that's going on the calorie tracker as my starting weight. As I haven't tracked since July, there's a very noticeable upward trend on my graph!!
I was up in the night for several hours with the baby (chicken pox!) and did eat a few bits but I'm counting that as yesterday! This morning I 've had a splash of milk in coffee, a slice of cheese and 2 pieces of Parma ham. Must drink lots of water today, I feel all shrivelled and dehydrated!
Enjoy the bank holiday everyone! It's a beautiful crisp cold day here and I'm determined to get the kids bundled up warm and out in the fresh air.

Oblomov16 · 02/01/2017 09:07

Weighed today. Put in 1.5lbs and so need to loose. Will try and seriously get back on it.

Oblomov16 · 02/01/2017 09:21

I was planning a second 8 weeks. But I have 2 parties this week. And I was planning a dry January. I've had nothing for the last week. Only lemonade on NYE. But last night I poured myself 2 glasses of red wine, without even thinking! Oops! Blush

APlaceOnTheCouch · 02/01/2017 09:31

You're all very inspiring and sound reinvigorated. I was going to start on the 9th because I have a lunch today and a short break before then. But you are inspiring shaming me into starting today. Off to weigh in...

Lovetunnocks · 02/01/2017 09:53

Morning! Managed to stay on track yesterday after a bit of a blow out on New Year's Eve - I ate a massive amount of cals but managed to stay pretty much within the bounds of the plan foodwise. Just had lovely scrambled eggs and bit of black pudding for breakfast. Lunch will be teeny as going to parents for dinner tonight and that's bound to be a carb fest. The whole Christmas/New Year festivities seem to be dragging on endlessly - I've got a girls 'prosecco' night out later this week too!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2017 12:37

I don't know if this is any use to anyone but in asda today they had a new Paul McKenna book for quitting sugar with a hypnosis cd. I've heard mixed reviews of his diet cd but I did use his sleep cd and it was brilliant.

Oblomov16 · 02/01/2017 15:09

I was very shocked at the earlier clothes discussion, re size 10 and 8!! Shock
I was a size 12, my whole life, for 20 years, at 9 stone. For the last 10 years, I've been a size 14, at 10 stone ++.
I need to get below 10 stone again. That's my first goal.

BeyondTheStarryNight · 02/01/2017 15:36

Ob, I'm with you - I don't think I've been a size eight since I was eight!
In my case, my height makes a difference - I'm 5'10"

Anyway... I'm back, starting again tomorrow for at least eight weeks :)

BeyondTheStarryNight · 02/01/2017 15:37

I could not have been further off track the last few days. Stayed with my sister in veggie household, so I am chock-full of carbs (and alcohol...)

yumyumpoppycat · 02/01/2017 21:07

Happy New year everyone new and oldtimers Wine

Sympathies on chicken pox Newaverage remember that was a mare with dc2 she had them on her head and couldn't lie down Sad hope your lo is better soon.

Not been v good, 4lbs up but am just really glad I have stayed in the 130s!

I am doing a new workout program so that is my January focus, if my weight can go down a little without proper calorie counting I will hopefully just need 1 or 2 strict 800 days a week. Fingers crossed.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/01/2017 21:17

Thanks yumyum it's a pita isn't it? I'm feeling very compassion fatigued right now after having one pox ridden boy before Christmas and now number 2! Currently sleeping on my shoulder while dh and I attempt to book our summer holiday....
Didn't have a bad day today though, soup for lunch and some left for tomorrow, chicken tray bake and broccoli for tea, and zero snacks except I did snarf a wedge of Stilton while I was cooking dinner earlier. I'm hungry now, but I'm not going to risk waking sleeping beauty!

yumyumpoppycat · 02/01/2017 21:37

Well done new, on a good day despite being in house of pox Flowers hope you get a fairly ok night, v good idea to book a holiday, I am picturing sunnier days as I type.
