Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

Beyond your recovery sounds like it's going well. I'm so impressed that you're even thinking about exercise - you're inspirational Flowers
TOTM here so I have been a bit rubbish but I'll get back on it next week.

Oblomov16 · 24/11/2016 15:08

Welcome back Moo.

I think my scales are broken. I had 7 lbs to loose 3 or 4 weeks ago. I wanted to get down to the next stone, where the scales change from a 10 to a 9. That was my objective. I did it in April, but put back on 3/4 of a stone, so wanted to lose it again.

Then, next objective is to lose the final 1/2 a stone, which I think will be the trickiest bit.

I have eaten well for the last few weeks (you've seen my meals) but I have also had a few crisps nuts and wine along the way and then all of a sudden I weighed myself today and I was 10 stone.

but I found that a bit upsetting because I knew I wasn't 10 stone. I've been 10 stone before and the skirt that I'm wearing today was hanging off me and now it's still quite snug.

really I wanna go somewhere and get weighed properly. The trouble is, I always weigh myself naked at home in the kitchen. Perish that thought for all of you with that version of me standing naked in the kitchen!!

So I can't exactly go and get myself weighed naked anywhere else!!

and yet I just don't think the scales are right.

Oh well, we continue onwards. I will carry on trying to be good and see if I can get weighed somewhere else, to get a true weight.

Scrubs image of MN'ers weighing themselves!!

BeyondTheHarpy · 24/11/2016 15:27

Haha that is exactly me, I hold my boobs in so I can see the display Grin
I do keep my knickers on though!
Weight loss isn't all weight though, the skirt sounds like a good sign!

Thanks aplace :) it really is minimal stuff though. Focussing on increasing my steps atm - I'd got up to 3000 steps a day pre op so my week of 500-600 a day looks a bit sad!

Dinner today is halloumi, veg and giant cous cous with quinoa (this groceries.asda.com/product/steam-packs/asda-4-steam-bags-giant-couscous-quinoa/910002345217 )

Oblomov16 · 25/11/2016 21:22

As expected my scales weren't working and today I am 5 lb's heavier!!

BeyondTheHarpy · 25/11/2016 21:34

Shock 5lbs?! That must be a mistake

In bed again now, step total for today is 2012, so aiming for 2500 tomorrow

BeyondTheHarpy · 25/11/2016 21:37

NSV... My resting heart beat is down from 92-95ish (yes I have a rather fast heart) to 87 for the last two days

yumyumpoppycat · 25/11/2016 23:55

Oblomov your scale is lying LTB!

Well done Beyond have no idea about heart rates but that sounds like a really good nsv.

Ok day here today but am v hungry and need to go to bed. I did eat some artichokes with mackerel earlier and that has caused all kinds of awfulness in my digestive regions.

It's been quite a stressful week here and there has been birthday cake so although my calories are ok on average, my carbs have been high.
Thurs: I had sweet potato and winter veg soup; then Jamie Oliver chicken traybake. Fri: avocado and gouda salad then chicken curry.
It's the snacking that has been my downfall. I can avoid eating lots of carbs if there aren't in the house but since we've had parties this week, there have been crisps; chocolates; cake, etc. I've managed to avoid the scales for most of the week. I might be brave enough to venture on to them tomorrow.

BeyondTheHarpy · 26/11/2016 14:38

My carbs are higher than I'm used to as well, but I'm trying to make them healthy choice ones.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/11/2016 19:27

Hi everyone.
It's been a very stressful few months for me, moving house two weeks ago (finally) and lots of things going wrong (roof falling in and electrics lethal!) but I really am back this time. I'll reread the thread tonight to catch up.
I've put on ten pounds since July which is when I stopped caring counting cals and carbs. It could have been so much worse, but I really want to get that off before Christmas. I'm just about to do a menu plan for the week ready to shop tomorrow.
Hope you're all doing well? I've missed this lovely friendly thread but I felt I shouldn't really lurk while eating Nutella from the jar.....

APlaceOnTheCouch · 27/11/2016 20:18

Happy new house bear 🏡 and welcome back!

CharlieChipmunk · 27/11/2016 21:30

Welcome back Bear. There's still time before Christmas to get those 10lbs off again

It's my week 5 weigh in tomorrow and I'm crossing my fingers for a 2lb loss which will mean a total of 19 lbs altogether.

Hi keepon, I'm hardly an expert given my recent behaviour, but when I was doing it properly for those first 8 weeks I found that having a brunch and dinner combination worked the best for me. Omelette or something eggy, or flat mushrooms and goats cheese at about 11am, then dinner at about 5.30. I find that if I eat too regularly I begin to just graze and that's where the calories really add up.
I also really believe that planning is the key. I do my shopping list from the book or recipes, make sure I've got everything in and that it will last the week. I found that I'd be more varied in my foods if I could see the whole week rather than just thinking what to have today IYSWIM? I also cut out fruit entirely last time, which I'm going to do again, although I will be taking a multivitamin as I found I got a bit run down last time I did the plan properly.

Today I'm having omelette with feta and spinach for lunch, and chicken casserole for dinner with lots of veg.

BeyondTheHarpy · 28/11/2016 10:17

I need to have three meals (well, I need to eat breakfast) as I need to take my morning tablets with food, however a good day for me gets all three meals in 8-9 hours, so I then fast for 15-16ish. I don't snack in the day then, as my meals are pretty evenly spread so I don't feel the need to.

Bumplovin · 28/11/2016 11:26

Just found this thread im on a similar diet for gestational diabetes. Ive lost weight in my pregnancy because of it and baby growing healthily ( my bmi was normal before the diabetes) can I join for some tips after birth as ive been told type 2 diabetes can occur after GD and following this type of diet sounds a good idea

BeyondTheHarpy · 28/11/2016 11:51

That's very sensible bump :) how long do you have to go?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/11/2016 12:31

Bump I had GD in all 3 pregnancies and the consultant told me that even if you don't develop it straight away there's a higher risk of developing it in later life, and by the third time he said its 'not if but when' which is why I started this plan earlier in the year.

diamantegal · 28/11/2016 12:52

I'm back too - have had a couple of weeks off due to a stinking cold meaning I just wanted stodge, but today I'm starting again.

Today's lunch - halloumi, parma ham and a load of lettuce and cucumber. Really tasty actually - I dip like halloumi. Anyone know if it works cold, or does it just go rubbery?

Tea will be spag bol but I'll have courgetti instead of pasta. And try to resist the garlic bread DH and DS have requested!

diamantegal · 28/11/2016 12:53
