blood sugar diet thread 5

Continuing thread for Blood Sugar Dieters:
Phase 1 lasts 2 - 8 weeks and involves restricting calories to 800 a day. Eating healthy fats is encouraged as is limiting carby foods (no specific guideline on this but some people aim for under 50g), small amounts of complex carbs are allowed but should be balanced ideally with green veg, protein and fat to lower the glycemic load and reduce the effect on blood sugar.

Tips
You may get headaches at first so drink lots of water, possibly try mixing a teaspoon of marmite into boiled water and having that to replenish salts etc
Exercise: aim for 10,000 steps a day and ideally consider adding in resistance training and some HIIT workouts.
Fasting some people find it helpful to have an eating window e.g 14:10 – 14 hours fasting and 10 hours to fit in the 800 cals. Avoid snacking and grazing - split your calories into 2 or 3 meals for potentially better weightloss.
Use the menu plans in the book or plan ahead on My fitness pal app

Foods to avoid
Sugar, sweets, milk chocolate, biscuits, cake
White bread, pasta, rice, chips etc
Processed Junky food with added sugar
Alcohol, fizzy drinks, juice etc
Diet foods, artificially low fat foods
High sugar fruit

Foods to eat
Full fat Natural/ Greek yoghurt
Fish in particular oily fish, Meat, eggs, nuts seeds
Non starchy veg, cauliflower, leafy greens, avocados, peppers, tomatoes, broccoli etc
Olive oil, coconut oil, rapseed oil

Berries and low sugar fruit (2 portions or less)
Lentils, beans etc

Foods to include in small amounts and be careful of
Full fat dairy is fine but some people do better with less of this
Starch veg such as sweet potatoes and squash
Wholegrains (quinoa, buckwheat etc) limit to 2 tablespoons
Low carb crackers and breads made with coconut flour, almond flour etc

Phase 2/ 3
for more sustainable continued weight loss and then maintenance add in some days with higher calories but still lower carbs, and have 2 – 5 days at 800 calories. Continue to avoid processed simple carbs like white bread, chocolate etc but possibly add in small amounts of dark chocolate and red wine or less sugary alcohol if you wish to.

I've got 5 pounds to go but know it's achievable but I imagine will come off slower now.

I have a "tea@ at 6 ish then our normal dinner at 8-9 as get so hungry at night but can easily go all day

Tea - chorizo and beef stew from slow cooker , ready and waiting for when I got in
Dinner - will be curry night saag aloo and chana masala and a glass of fizz yum

focus800 · 18/11/2016 19:02

Also had a. 1200 day yesterday of sugar basically pre menstrual so I just accepted it and carried on

BeyondTheHarpy · 18/11/2016 21:06

It was very reminiscent of maternity packing!! Grin

I have... bags (of 50g weighed out) of low sugar muesli, uht almond milk, little cheeses, olives, raspberries, bottles of water and a new green tea to try. And DH is under instructions to visit with vegetables (special request for carrot sticks and houmous!) cause the nhs food i remember is bloody crap at providing even five a day!!

yumyumpoppycat · 19/11/2016 12:21

Sounds like a healthy stash Beyond, hope it goes well and you have a quick recovery. I had a minor fix when first dc was 8 months and dh bought me the complete sex in the city box set to watch (no healthy snacks in sight ;) ), I was all set with a blow up cushion and my mum on hand but it was fine compared to post childbirth.

I've got course work with me to do if I feel up to it, or a few films and the first few episodes of elementary on my sky q if I don't :)
Just waiting to go in...

yumyumpoppycat · 19/11/2016 12:45

Sending you lots of luck and wishes for a speedy recovery Beyond and some virtual carb-free cake Cake Wink

CharlieChipmunk · 19/11/2016 15:32

Best of luck Beyond

Well I'm out for my birthday meal tonight and stressing! It's my week 4 weigh in on Monday and I've lost around 17 lbs so far and I've tried really hard and just stuck to it

My husband thinks I should have whatever I fancy tonight - and this would usually be chips, bread rolls, pizza type stuff along with brownies for dessert. This would then trigger me to fall off the wagon as it always has in the past

So, I've looked at the menu and I'm going to have the large house salad full of veg and quinoa and beans with goats cheese. I'll have a sorbet selection for dessert

I've already had a bulletproof coffee, yogurt with half a melon for breakfast. A superfood salad and cottage cheese for lunch. So I'll be over my 800 calories

Will this be ok? It's not carb heavy and it's the best I can do

yumyumpoppycat · 19/11/2016 15:50

Charlie you deserve a Halo that sounds like an excellent compromise, it wouldnt be healthy to be counting calories on your birthday tbh, enjoy sounds like some lovely food. Happy Birthday Wine

I'm done, recovery is so peachy that I might be discharged today!!

I had one little slice of regular cake last night, but apart from that all eating and drinking has been on plan :) the nurses were impressed with the colour of my wee due to the amount of water I can get down Grin

Oblomov16 · 20/11/2016 11:21

Was just about to wish Beyond good luck, but clearly I'm too late. Speedy recovery Beyond.

CharlieChipmunk · 20/11/2016 17:39

Managed to stick to my restaurant choices last night although it was a struggle. I nearly caved and had the baked Brie followed by fries and pasta and a brownie but held firm and ate the house salad with goats cheese and then three small scoops of sorbet

Today's food

Bulletproof coffee

Yogurt, orange melon & pumpkin seeds

Protein bar

Cottage cheese with salad & mushroom soup

It's my 4th weigh in tomorrow and I'd like to see another two pounds off which will give me a stone and three lbs loss.

BeyondTheHarpy · 20/11/2016 18:44

I'm home and in bed. Had dinner that was 100% not BSD friendly (big fast food company beginning with M...), and I'll be properly back on the wagon in the morning :)

APlaceOnTheCouch · 20/11/2016 22:12

Beyond I'm glad to hear you're home. I hope you enjoyed your McD's. Smile
I was in a cooking mood today so I had winter veg and chilli soup for lunch. Dinner was low-carb meatballs with konjac noodles. I forgot pics again!

BeyondTheHarpy · 21/11/2016 12:31

It was rather nice Grin

Muesli and almond milk for breakfast today, with green tea. Hummus and veg for lunch, DH is making it now :)

yumyumpoppycat · 21/11/2016 13:56

Good to hear all went well Beyond - glad your dh is taking care of you and v impressed you are back on it.

Charlie - hope you enjoyed birthday meal, don't put too much pressure on yourself but hope weigh in went well.

A place your food sounds delicious today! I am aiming for 800 today as had mulled wine and crisps yest, at least mulled wine is made with 'heart friendly' red wine ;)

Not that healthy (eggs, cheese, coffee and nuts) so far so need to get some veg in with my main meal in a bit. At least I have exercised.

OP posts:
CharlieChipmunk · 21/11/2016 19:55

Evening all

God I'd love some crisps Yum!

Weigh in was ok. 2 lbs off making 17 lbs lost in four weeks. I'm definitely struggling a little with this 800 calorie sticking to!

BeyondTheHarpy · 21/11/2016 20:00

Dinner was a portion of the turkey mince and aubergine thing that I had put in the freezer, and I can confirm that it freezes and defrosts well Grin

BeyondTheHarpy · 22/11/2016 13:16

Food today similar to yesterday...

Muesli and almond milk with green tea
Carrot and celery with houmous
Fish, veg (cabbage, I think) and whole grain rice/quinoa mix

Comes in at 832 calories and I am trying to get a few more steps today than yesterday, which is still very few as I am officially bedbound

mootime · 22/11/2016 13:25

Can I join you all again please. I was here a while ago, then fell off the wagon. I'm going to try my hardest to get stuck in properly. Hoping to loose half a stone before my 40th in 28 days.... but really need to shift 2 stone overall.

CharlieChipmunk · 22/11/2016 14:39

Welcome Moo what sort of things do you plan to eat?

My food today

Bulletproof coffee

Yogurt, pumpkin seeds & blueberries

Quinoa, broccoli and rocket salad with some cottage cheese

1/2 an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter

Leaves me 200 cals for later

mootime · 22/11/2016 17:38

Hi. I'm planning on eating twice a day. I need to revisit the book and get some good recipes back out. Feeling a bit depondant about it all but hoping to kick myself up the behind...

yumyumpoppycat · 22/11/2016 18:13

Welcome back moo, dont be despondant. Just stick to it for 28 days and you will feel miles better, nothing like a goal for focus.

Good days charlie and beyond. High day for me, almost prefer the low cal days.

OP posts:
CharlieChipmunk · 23/11/2016 18:42

Another OK day food wise

Bulletproof coffee

Green lentils, edamame beans, quinoa and kale salad with cheese

Protein bar

Yogurt with seeds and a pear

BeyondTheHarpy · 24/11/2016 09:09

Mmm, that salad sounds nice! Having a bit of a bpc craving too as I'm off coffee Grin

My food is going well, hoping to get my exercise a bit closer to normal levels now I'm five days post op. Which is hardly running marathons - as I keep saying to people here when they pull Shock faces - my normal is far below what most people will think of as normal already, cause of my health problems!
