Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, - in most diets, 25% of lost weight is muscle, up to 50% for sleb crash diets.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His recent article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Also this interview with a leading researcher into fasting in combination with standard cancer treatment: ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Well done apples, DD is 8 (nearly 9) and has had some friends starting to obsess about weight... she's beautifully proportioned herself and very healthy and active, she just also is deluded as keeps telling me I'm slim Grin With her I've just talked about how much better we are eating as a family, lots more veg etc which she loves so is always happy about! She asked me to tell her dad she doesn't like going to McDonald's anymore - which I've said she can tell him if she wants, or if her brother wants to go - she can always order a salad, or substitute chips for fruit (which she has done with me before).

Hope you are ok mother - have a big glass of water, might help.... ?

Blossom - sounds like you are doing well today, not sure I'd face a food shop on a FD! Though I did go through an online order last week which was ok.

PopcornFrenzy · 05/11/2015 12:17

I love Germany and it's various different types of bread! Am an Army wife and DH is away so find my evenings boring when the DC are in bed hence why I've started putting on weight Sad

Am doing well today, just had soup, bread and a 100g of strawberries so that'll last me til my turkey breast salad and banana at tea time

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2015 12:26

Good luck to the Thursday fasters

Congrats on your NSVs for towel fit (that's a first !) and compliments, MrD
Shows how this WOE has already changed your body.

Definitely don't fast this week, Short ór until you are fully recovered.
Just keep within TDEE, drink lots of water, but try to cut out alcohol.
I hope the antibiotics work their magic and you feel better very soon.

I hope you are feeling better now, Dragons
Have you been getting enough sleep and drinking enough water ?

Evening all. Popcorn I'm jealous of your access to endless varieties of German bread. In Singapore the average loaf is bloody awful. And nice bread costs a fortune.

FD today and it's gone well. Had baked chicken and veg for dinner.

I went to a strength and conditioning class earlier that was great. My hips and lower back feel more mobile than they have for ages.

I have been thinking about trying a full day fast (i.e. no food at all on a fast day). It would end up being about 36 hours. Does anyone do this? My thinking is that often on a FD by the time it gets to dinner I feel like I could easily go without. And eating seems to (sometimes) trigger more hunger, even if what I've eaten is the right kind of protein & fibre-rich meal. Do any 5:2 veterans have words of wisdom?

Lulabellarama · 05/11/2015 13:16

Hi all,

OohMrDarcy I am also trying to present my eating/weight loss in an appropriate way for my 13yo DS. He is a complete bean-pole, very, very skinny naturally (as I was at his age) and hasn't hit the teen munchies yet. He will skip meals, saying he's not hungry, which concerns me as he's got no body fat to rely on and I know teenage boys can be very susceptible to EDs.

Today's fast is going well, nothing so far and going to have some salad with a hardboiled egg for lunch soon. Dinner is a Waitrose Keralan Chicken soup. I actually had an invitation to be taken out for dinner tonight, which I have turned down - I NEVER turn down free food usually! (It wasn't solely about fasting, it would have been too late for DS2 to stay up on a school night)

lovemyway · 05/11/2015 13:49

FD today and I said yesterday that I wouldn't weigh until Monday morning after my scale disappointment on Wed(no change after FD!) BUT this morning I thought well i'll weigh because it's probably gone up again after 2 NFD even at TDEE and I'm better off knowing now. What a surprise, I was actually 9st 10, 2lbs less than morning after FD. As bigchoc said weight can fluctuate so much due to undigested food, water etc. I know scales aren't everything but it really gave me a boost for my FD today. So far so good. Good luck others.

TalkinPeas · 05/11/2015 14:13

Terror
I regularly go 24-26 hours without food - from Sunday roast through to Monday supper
so long as you drink PLENTY its fine

Personally I think its better to eat something every day - so that the fasting does not become too obsessive
but I have been known to have the Monday supper just be a massive 300 cal pot of veg soup as that leaves me too full to walk
and then I last through comfortably till Tuesday lunch.

You just have to try it and see how you feel.

m0ther
LOTS of water and tea and coffee. You'll be fine.

m0therofdragons · 05/11/2015 14:37

Cat had me up at 4am being sick on the bed so might be tiredness. Haven't fainted and have planned a good day with sensible eating. Still not feeling great but not as bad as I was. 3 more hours until dh can help and counting. Not at work any more as I finished for the day.
popcorn I always eat so much more when dh is working late!

LauraVonSlim · 05/11/2015 16:30

Hello everybody. I have slipped back into my lurking habits on but I wanted to post as I have had so many people telling me how wonderful I look and how much weight I have lost recently, that I wanted to say THANK YOU to all you all as this thread has been a big part of my success, especially at the beginning. I am sorry I don't give more back to it but wanted to post this to say thank you for this wonderful thread, and to let you know that you are helping more people than you know.

I started of at 14.10lbs 5 months ago. I have lost 2 stones so I am now 12.10lbs with a BMI of 27 (ish) so well on my way towards getting into that healthy BMI zone which is my big aim.

I have found this WOE eating absolutely revolutionary. I have yo-you dieted all my of life, (though not that successfully as I haven't managed to break the 13 stone mark since I was at university 20 years ago!) and this is the first time I feel truly in control of my eating, and completely convinced that I can get down towards my goal weight and stay there. My whole life my weight, and the desperate urge to eat, has been a towering wall of water waiting to swamp me. Even when I was successful following a diet / exercise programme for a while, I felt that it was only a matter of time before my strength gave out and the wave swamped me again. I don't feel like that any more and it is so liberating.

BeaBoo · 05/11/2015 16:32

Hi all, I hope you don't mind me butting in!

I am thinking of starting 5:2 next week. I have lost 2st this year calorie counting but find it hard to stick to a lower amount of calories every day. I have done IF before and I think it worked for me IIRC but it was a few years ago so I'm not sure. I have a long history of trying every diet known to man (including VLCD's) so I know how to stick to >500 cals a day, and I know I can manage it. I have another 3st to lose.

Can anyone advise me how I work out calories for fast days and non-fast days?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2015 16:56

Congrats on your fantastic SV, Laura Your lightests in 20 years, wonderful Smile
Another 5:2 success story.
And a lifestyle NSV that you feel happy and in control at last.
Once you reach your final goal, I suggest some form of fasting for maintenance, say 6:1

Welcome, BeaBoo

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2015 16:57

Terror I firmly recommend AGAINST the full 36 hours on zero cals

. The few scientific studies indicate problems doing this other than as a one-off:
. A couple of animal studies indicated problems with hardening of arteries.
. Varady found more tendency to muscle loss when she compared people on zero cals to those on 500.
. A few women on zero-cal ADF reported irregular / stopping periods, so fertility may be put on hold. They also felt very stressed and unhappy.
. Fasting experts like Mattson, Longo, Pilon all recommend at least a few hundred cals every day.

If you want longer fasts, then go from NFD supper to FD supper on zero cals. That's 20-24 hrs, which is the maximum I (and Pilon) I suggest.n

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2015 16:59

Much better to eat within TDEE on NFDs, stay within safe alcohol limits and cut down on sugary junk.

OP posts:
Greengardenpixie · 05/11/2015 17:01

well my fast day yesterday went well. Woke up and i had a slice of toast and peanut butter, lunch was couscous. A few treats inbetween but still well under my calories for a non fast day. Tbh, im surprised. I am not that hungry! I think this diet suits me. I am never hungry in the morning so on a FD its easy. If i dont eat i tend not to feel hungry but when i do start eating i find it soooo hard to stop! My next FD is Monday. I feel a bit guilty eating truth be told, even although i have done my FD for this week!

BeaBoo · 05/11/2015 17:33

Thanks BigChoc, sorry should have read the OP first! Blush

Iamblossom · 05/11/2015 18:27

Will end this FD on 510. Really pleased. Didn't fall into the wine bottle despite more bad news today (this week can just do one to be honest). Had a three egg omelette with a slice of ham and a pile of courgettes followed by a yoghurt with seeds and berries and an options hot choc to follow in a bit.

Didn't even think about food this afternoon as was out and about.

confusedandemployed · 05/11/2015 18:53

Evening all, just caught up with the whole of the new thread.
lamb sorry you've had such a crap week. Glad you nailed your FD today!
TiP love the Crimean War analogy. I will nick this.
Laura congrats on a fab SV!!
Breadandwine - homemade stout? Tell me more! I'm a recent convert to stout. Yum.

A good fasting week for me - Mon and today. Will end today around 500cals. Had quite a lot of compliments about weight loss this week, so feeling very motivated. Never mind that 80% of that loss happened by September! It must be the exercise changing my shape.

Off to put DD to bed now. Hope all Thursday fasters are nailing it!

ednabuckett · 05/11/2015 19:57

Evening all. Finished my FD under 500 but am STARVING!!!! Had such a lovely lunch - a cauliflower 'tabbouleh'. Seriously so nice I am going to batch cook a load and freeze it for fast days. Only 56 cals a portion, 170 ish if you add some halloumi. This is the recipe if anyone's interested. I have put the site on the recipes thread : www.lavenderandlovage.com/2015/02/52-diet-spiced-moroccan-cauliflower-couscous-tabbouleh-with-halloumi-56-calories.html

I was still maintaining this morning so really hoping for a loss tmoz.

Well done on the SV lovemyway. Hi five to blossom for not succumbing to the vino!

Can't wait to eat tomorrow!!!

TalkinPeas · 05/11/2015 20:03

edna
If you are still hungry you will not sleep well and will not eat calmly tomorrow
go and peel a couple of carrots and munch through them bugs bunny style
and drink at least one pint of water before bed

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/11/2015 20:03

That recipe looks delicious!

Fast day finished here and I've felt great all day. Managed to get all the way to lunch before eating anything and felt really clear headed. It didn't feel like a struggle at all today - hooray!

Greengardenpixie · 05/11/2015 20:17

mmm..well was doing so well but think ive kind of gone over my calories TDEE by about 200 Blush Actually i blame the kids and bonfire night. We had some frankfurters in rolls..kind of took me over - that and a choc pud!. Shocked at how easy it was! - shit! So tomorrow i will eat 200 calories less just to balance it? Will that work?

lovemyway · 05/11/2015 20:18

Feeling full on FD! Shock I tried a different approach today as I normally have two meals. Today I had 3 very small ones just because my DD asked why I wasn't having breakfast and I didn't want a diet conversation so had one weetabix with a splash of skimmed milk, one bowl of the tomato and garlic soup mentioned on here for lunch and tonight a small pack of sushi with green leaves and coriander(my fave thing) along with buckets of green, camomile, peppermint tea plus water. I actually found it easier. I just love the flexibility of 5:2. Oh and another NSV: belt tightened by one extra hole. Oh yes! Wink
Quick question, on FD i've noticed that my eyes look brighter, is it me?

TalkinPeas · 05/11/2015 20:19

greengarden
So tomorrow i will eat 200 calories less just to balance it? Will that work?
That is exactly how it works.
Look at your food intake a week at a time ~ a month at a time ~ a year at a time
you can adjust your intake over a period of days to maintain control

Greengardenpixie · 05/11/2015 20:25

Thank you :) talkinpeas. Think i am getting the whole idea now :)

Frenchfemme · 05/11/2015 20:26

Great result on the FD and avoiding the wine blossom - sorry your week is continuing to be crap.

FD successfully completed here, just about to have a cup of chamomile tea before taking dogs for a final wee.

Hope all faster had a great day.
