Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had Eating Disorders you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE if higher) or 1000 cals for BF
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a glass of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was FAT, not muscle or water, - in most diets, 25% of lost weight is muscle, up to 50% for sleb crash diets.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials (consecutive FDs) with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Molecular Mechanisms and Clinical Applications: J CellMetabolism
Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease

His recent article in J Aging Mech Disease 2015 explains the health benefits of intermittent fasting in great scientific detail.

Also this interview with a leading researcher into fasting in combination with standard cancer treatment: ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Firstly thank you for your support & info today. Major wobble!!
Ended a mini fast, just in over 900. Will have a 'new normal' day tomorrow.

TalkinPease · 04/11/2015 18:52

m0ther
TBH I have cheese
Others have a square of really strong dark chocolate
but have something that will fill your mouth and brain with flavour

lovemyway · 04/11/2015 19:16

Well done keepon Getting past that first FD is a milestone because you realise that you will survive! Also did you find that you din't get hungrier as the day went on. For me it comes in waves but doesn't get worse(thankfully!)

lovemyway · 04/11/2015 19:22

Got my second FD of the week tomorrow and have the tomato and garlic soup in the fridge ready for lunch(9Oish cals) and think i'll have prawn stir fry(with spray oil) for dinner. Have stuck to TDEE this week .Good luck to other fasters tomorrow. I also am not going to weigh until Monday am.By the way bigchoc I checked my cals for alcohol on your link and was shocked at how much half a bottle of merlot was Shock Wine That much to me does not feel like bingeing!! Quite a sobering Wink thought.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2015 19:26

That's a good FD at this stage, KeepOn and you have sensible plans for tomorrow's NFD.

I hope you had a lovely birthday, Pixie
That's good you are finding this WOE fairly easy so far.

Everyone has a wobble sometimes, Annie but a wobble shared is often a wobble conquered.
So, everyone post if things get tough.
Post when they go well too, because we celebrate all the SVs and NSVs here, as we get leaner.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2015 19:31

I ask everyone to check the alcohol units and calories link, livelong because most people don't realise their total.
in fact, some people found all they need to do to lose weight is just to cut back to safe alcohol levels, no change to food.

PopcornFrenzy · 04/11/2015 20:42

Have stayed within 7 cals of my TDEE today and have felt I've eaten loads! Got another FD tomorrow which will be my third this week, actually quite looking forward to it, had my last cals at 6:30pm so will try to incorporate 16:8 in with my ADF and see how it works

m0therofdragons · 04/11/2015 21:33

Went for cheese - chilli cheddar - really yummy! 470 calories today despite my mess up having orange juice. Busy day ahead tomorrow - busy days are easy to be good as I don't have time to eat much. Just need to resist the cake in the canteen.

OohMrDarcy · 04/11/2015 21:36

Have had a fab day today, had a little curry at lunchtime - with a slice of bread instead of naan (after seeing the calories in my last one!) left a little for tonight (large spoonful)

Tonight was the school fireworks, so we had the traditional jacket spuds and hot dogs before we went, I had my leftover curry and a sprinkle of cheese (instead of the mountain of cheese on a giant jacket I'd have had in the past). Eating before we went meant I didn't have a burger there, nor did I have a giant hot choc and cake.... instead I shared a hot choc with the kids and they had a little bag of sweets each.

The fireworks were lovely and it was just nice having time with them - and once again, I haven't pigged out, and feel like I've stayed balanced. I've even kept some calories back for the weekend - I'm finally having an evening with my sister and best friend - we've been trying to book it since the divorce came through! Going out for dinner with bestie, then heading over to my sisters once her DC are in bed for a glass of wine and a chick flick

Don't worry BigChoc I'll be sensible, and its my one day I'm allowing treats

BigChocFrenzy · 04/11/2015 21:56

Well done on successful FDs, Pixie, Dragons, popcorn, KeepOn and all ither Wednesday fasters.

Sounds a lovely day, MrD and great food planning.
Enjoy your women's night out at the weekend. It's good to let your hair down occasionally and you've some cals banked.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/11/2015 05:57

Well done, all Wednesday fasters.

Fast day for me today but was woken very early by DD so the tiredness may make it more of a struggle. Plan to have a strong coffee and lots of water to help me through the day!

Good luck to anyone else fasting today.

Iamblossom · 05/11/2015 07:55

Fd here. Struggling with it mentally as:

  1. Am at target weight but I know I won't be by Monday if I don't fast today after monday's half hearted affair
  2. Butlins threw me off track and I need to get back on track with fasting

Not even hungry so am drinking huge mug of tea and am out from midday with work so that will help.

Good luck all.

Iamblossom · 05/11/2015 07:59

shortaris1 · 05/11/2015 08:07

Morning all, not managed a FD yet this week due to various social things. Also have a skin abscess that I'm on antibiotics for and they make me exhausted so I've decided not to fast this week while I'm on them but just to try to keep to TDEE to maintain my loss from last week.

Don't know if this is right or wrong but I'm shattered so going to see how I go!

Good luck to all fasting today. (I sadly wish I was joining you)

OohMrDarcy · 05/11/2015 09:09

Morning all

Thursday FD here, have woken feeling a little hungry which is strange for me, am on the second pint of water and making a cup of tea so hopefully that will sort it until lunchtime!

Lunch is going to be a couple of slices of ham, with some carrot / cucumber I think today to keep me going until dinner of chicken and veggies

2 x NSV this morning for me... first one as I got out of the shower, I noticed the towel fit around me properly again! Until recently it fit around at the top, but around the hips it was gaping.... so that felt fab! And the second was my daughter noticed I'm not wearing some of my clothes as they were 'too baggy' in her words, she's really pleased for me bless her Smile Been very concious of how I dealt with that one as I don't want her to think weight should be a big deal

Frenchfemme · 05/11/2015 09:17

Some great results and determination on here!

May I please join the circle blossom and boldly and all other Thursday faster - FD for me as well. Just contemplating a second strong coffee after calming down 2 very excited dogs barking and whining at the tabby cat lounging on the garden furniture cushions handily stacked outside the kitchen window (note, none of my 4 cats are tabbies ...).

Herbal tea and water for the rest of the day. Dinner will be chicken stuffed with St Maure and wrapped in Bayonne ham, roasted on a bed of onions and mixed peppers, served with a small portion of brown rice.

Hope you feel better soon shortaris1, and will soon be back fasting with the rest of us.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 05/11/2015 09:25

Thank you for the moral support, Blossom- I will need it today.

French and MrD, hope all goes well for you today. Congrats on the NSV, MrD!

FD for me too, I'm in Germany so an hour ahead so it's nearly time to break my 16 hour fast, I'm not really that hungry so will probably wait til lunchtime, I'll have chicken noodle soup with a couple of slices of whole meal bread.

Good luck to all the fasters today

OohMrDarcy · 05/11/2015 09:45

ooh love Germany popcorn, I lived there for a few years as a child (army dad) ... can't wait to take my kids there in the next year or two and hopefully show them some of where I grew up

OnceAMeerNotAlwaysAMeer · 05/11/2015 10:00

Heh, am visiting Germany today popcorn! Having a mini-fast day, going to snaffle a few strawberries & yoghurt shortly then not have anything until I get there, around 19:00.

Applesnotcakes · 05/11/2015 10:50

Mini fast day here today. Nothing eaten yet and some soup planned for lunch

Evening is my downfall though so am going to try BCFs tips about strong mints, teeth cleaning etc to ensure there's no additional food

Look after yourself today short sounds like fasting would not be right. Just keep under TDEE

Well done Darcy. Love the progress. How olds your DD? Mine is 17 and very body conscious do I agree we have to careful about the messages we send out. I think being clearly overweight though it's fine for her to see my attempts to get healthy. Not thin but healthy.

Hope everyone else's fasts go well. french your dinner sounds fab!

m0therofdragons · 05/11/2015 11:13

Gah I'm at work and just had a small dairy milk bar as options were limited. I feel really light headed. Not hungry but just like I'm going to faint. I do faint so it's not worrying other than it would be very very embarrassing (and I'm wearing a skirt!). I'm trying to ignore it. Wish I knew the answer. I don't think it's due to yesterday's fast day and I'm not hungry at all. I will get drinking water!

Iamblossom · 05/11/2015 11:37

Hope you are ok mother! Have you got clean knickers on? Seriously hope you don't faint.

Just about to leave the house for my meeting, nothing to eat so far, water and black coffee. Tescos shop was torture! Very helpful to know you fellow fasters are out there going through the same. Was ok till I read french's tea!!!

I am planning a 3 egg courgette and ham omelette with a huge salad.

Frenchfemme · 05/11/2015 11:43

Sorry blossom!
