Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had EDs you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Successful FD here.

2 bowls of lentil soup and some fruit.

I am particularly proud as it was the first day of the new term today and DH is off on a 5 week work trip! Eldest is at primary school and little one is now at nursery in he mornings. Working tomorrow so it will be a mammoth task getting us all up and out the door on time!

Kitchen closed. Early bed for me I think!

Well done to everyone else fasting today.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/08/2015 20:14

Well done on your FD, Maz
Phew, with all you've got on, an early night sounds good.

Coming in about 100 calories under on a NFD but there's nothing else I want so saying I'm done now - FD tomorrow so hoping it goes well!

fusspot66 · 18/08/2015 21:28

I'm still waiting to get that magical 12 something at my Sunday weigh in. I was away in a tent this weekend so couldn't weigh. FD today is ok when busy at work. DH made bolognese and I had a very quick turnaround between work and kids' swimming lesson so no time to fiddle about trying to make courgette spaghetti for myself for the first time. I took a wild punt on the calorie content of some frozen petit pois and green beans with my bolognese in the interest of family harmony. I have since googled and it seems I made a healthy choice - and very nice it was too. I'm trying to do 5:2 in a very simple no fuss way.

Hellokitty105 · 18/08/2015 21:44

Just checking in, NFD successful. I did manage a walk this afternoon too. Officially back on track and plan to stay that way!

TerrorAustralis · 19/08/2015 07:15

Would usually be a FD for me today, but I've got an awful sore throat and very tired, so giving myself a break. I'm just about ready for a nap.

If I'm feeling better later in the week I will try for another FD, otherwise will just leave it at 6:1 this week.

VeganCanBeFabulous · 19/08/2015 07:49

Oh My God - it only bloody works!

I have been trying to lose weight since having my daughter in April 2013. I did pretty well the 1st year, lost three stone taking me under my pre-pregnancy weight but still very much in the obese category. I have always struggled with my weight, I suspect in part due to my mother equating feeding with loving (but that is a whole other story...)

Anyway I lost the first 3 stone by becoming vegan (for a variety of reasons) and upping my exercise levels a bit. However, i have been loosely trying to lose weight since new year and as of 3 weeks ago I was half a stone heavier than Jan 1st!
BUT three weeks ago I started 5:2. I have found it much easier than I was expecting and have lost 12lbs in three weeks! I am now only 8lbs from my wedding weight which was my lowest adult weight!

I am currently a bit evangelical about the whole thing and am feeling like this could actually change my life. My current stats are still hideous -

Height: 5'1"
Weight 13st
BMI: 34.4

But my starting stats were -

Height: 5'1" (obviously!)
Weight:13st 12lbs
BMI: 36.6

So I am feeling very positive. My first goal was to get to 12st something which I hope to achieve by the end of the week if possible. My next goal is to get to 12st 4lbs which was my weight when I got married 6 years ago. Ultimately I'd like to get under 9 stone as that will put me in the healthy BMI range. That seems like a pipe dream at the moment but I feel so motivated I feel like it might actually be possible.

I have learnt so much about my eating habits - what true hunger is and how much my eating is governed by boredom, time tabling and mere expectation of food, it has been such an eye opener! I have been eating so much more than I actually NEED!

Anyway, just wanted to share with you all how fabulous I feel at the moment. I know I will have ups and downs but I am hoping that writing this down will remind me during the bad times.

Hope you all have fabulous days and wish you lots of success Smile

Pufflemum · 19/08/2015 08:43

Thanks everyone and well done Vegan!

It's Swaying here , for some strange reason my username has changed to an old one today.

I've currently set MFP on NFD to 1450. I am fairly active as I walk my crazy dog twice a day and exercise at least three times a week. I'm trying to work on my portion sizes as I don't feel I eat often but maybe too much when I do. I went out for dinner last night so the wine won't of helped. I'll keep going and plan to fast tomorrow.

Lottieuk · 19/08/2015 08:58

Good morning all quite a successful NFD yesterday came in at 1579 (TDEE is 1540) and I've previously been going over by about 150 so happy with that! Another NFD today too!

Good luck to any wed Fasters out there ????

TerrorAustralis · 19/08/2015 09:08

Well done Vegan! Keep going, you will surprise yourself.

VeganCanBeFabulous · 19/08/2015 09:40

Thanks guys. Made the mistake of weighing myself midweek (over confident!) and I've put one pound on! Resolved not to weigh myself again till my usual weigh day next Tuesday so I get a proper reading. Sounds like other people are having a positive start :)

Imnotaslimjim · 19/08/2015 09:45

Hi 5:2ers

I'm a newbie to the plan, it was suggested to me by the nurse yesterday after yet another loss/gain/loss/gain cycle

I've just used the TDEE and its surprised me, can someone double check for me please?

I'm 170cm and 122kg. I exercise almost daily (30 minutes yoga 3x, walking/jogging 5km 3x) so I put exercise at moderate. That gave me a TDEE of 3025. Even on lighter exercise it was 2683. Are these right? It seems very high. I was expecting to aim for 1400-1600

I'll be having my first fast day tomorrow, as we're already booked to eat out tonight

fusspot66 · 19/08/2015 10:03

Hello Slimjim, & Vegan, 5:2 is a great way of eating.

I find the FD easier if I've had more protein the night before and much harder if I had a carby tea which makes me start the day ravenous.

stripytees · 19/08/2015 10:15

slimjim TDEE gets lower as your weight gets lower. You can calculate your goal weight TDEE to compare. Many of us have used goal weight sedentary TDEE for NFDs to maximise weight loss especially after getting into a healthy BMI.

Vegan your story is really inspiring, it's lovely to hear you've had such a great start!

Breadandwine · 19/08/2015 10:23

Welcome Vegansarefabulous and Soontobeslimjim - oops, couple of name changes there! Grin

Nice to see another vegan on board! Being vegan myself, I know what a big advantage it is when starting this WOL. We're already attuned to getting the best out of veg, which are (mostly) naturally low calorie.

Check out all the lovely recipes on the 5:2 recipe thread - look for my record 75cal curry linked to on 01-Apr-14 (but ignore the alcohol recommendation!).

thoroughlymodernfanny · 19/08/2015 10:23

I've struggled more than usual this week, but am determined to nail my fd today.

Imnot- my tdee is 2050 and I'm sedentary. If I put in moderate excercise it takes me up to 2900 so it may be right. I think age ( or lack thereof) makes a big difference.

I tend to eat 1400- 1600 on week nfd and tdee on Saturdays.

Vegan- I've had similar losses a and revelations. Im so grateful to this thread as in rl it is hard not to become a diet bore when the diet is so life changing!Grin

VeganCanBeFabulous · 19/08/2015 11:07

Hi BreadandWine - thanks, I agree I have found it easier than some seem to to find low cal foods to eat on fast days. I can easily make a mountain of food for 500 cals due to it all being plant based. I checked out your recipe for the simple pancakes and am going to give them a go this evening with my kids. Do you think they work well with savoury fillings? I imagine they would. I am also on a very low budget for food so always on the look out for cheap but nutritious meal ideas (I love homemade marinated seitan and veg curries are a staple in this house)

Fanny I agree threads like this can save oneself from being a massive pain in the arse. Generally I think there is nothing duller than talking about dieting or more specifically hearing other people talk about dieting, but when it makes you feel this good it is hard to keep quiet about it! I have got my husband on board and he has lost about 5lbs but he only has another stone or so to go so it may be a slower loss than mine. I am thrilled to say that for the first time in a long time I weigh less than him! I can completely see how this can be a long term WOL and I really do recognise similar eating patterns in my "naturally" skinny friends, especially with regard to only eating when actually hungry and skipping meals if not.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/08/2015 11:22

Newbies: Don't forget to measure waist and hips, so you can also monitor inches loss.

Those with a few stone to go hould lose pretty quickly for some time, but these tips should help:
. No snacking - eat proper meals and have any treat as your pud
. Have at most one treat per day
. Keep to the recommended safe alcohol limits, see OP links
. Drink lots of water and eat veg, FDs and NFDs.

Welcome Vegan Well done on your SV and good start.
Smile
Your learning NSVs wrt hunger and amounts of food should help you achieve your aim of a healthy BMI range.
It is good to have smaller milestones along the way - your wedding / lowest adult weight will be the first one to celebrate.

Welcome SlimJim
Smile
TDEE is age-related, but if you were 25, your TDEE would be 2745 for lightly active, which I think is a more suitable activity level than "moderate."
To boost weight loss, you could also calculate for "sedentary"

I recommend you mfp for a week, just to check you don't normally exceed TDEE - it identifies calorie bombs and trains you to have appropriate portion size.

Imnotaslimjim · 19/08/2015 11:33

Thank you for the welcome. I'm 34, and thanks for tip I'll work on sedentary for now. In looking forward to front back in control

confusedandemployed · 19/08/2015 11:40

Morning everyone and welcome yet more new people. Congrats on your success so far Vegan!

Just checking in for a holiday sanity check. I'm sticking to 16:8 most days but then basically eating and drinking what I want. I'm maintaining the exercise though and I weighed this morning, expecting a couple of pounds on and I've stayed the same so I'm delighted.

I've noticed that I no longer want to snack like I used to, even on a week off. This is a huge NSV for me because previously I've been guilty of keeping my meals meagre in order to snack more. These days I really enjoy my much more substantial meals.

Hope everyone is doing OK and good luck Wednesday fasters...

BigChocFrenzy · 19/08/2015 13:53

That's an important NSV about reduced snacking, confused
Snacks keep your insulin levels raised, which raises hunger levels and can start cravings spirals.
Also, higher insulin levels keeps the body longer in fat-storage mode instead of fat-burning
You can enjoy bigger meals if you don't snack, because it is surprising how many cals are in snacking / grazing

OP posts:
TalkinPeace · 19/08/2015 16:16

Confused
This is a huge NSV for me because previously I've been guilty of keeping my meals meagre in order to snack more. These days I really enjoy my much more substantial meals.
You've cracked it.
Well done.

vastknapsack · 19/08/2015 16:55

afternoon all, checking in Smile hello to fellow newbies!

I'm another 2lb down today, so that's a total loss of 11lb in 16 days. 1 inch off both waist and hips Smile (expecting no loss this week due to totm so this really is a bonus).

FD for me today, only had water and tea so far and planning just the one meal today (due to timings because of working nights).

Loving Vegans' enthusiasm! (sorry I'm on the app and not sure how to make your name bold). I too am evangelical about this Wol and I'm trying really hard not to annoy everyone about it! I had a few compliments when I met up with friends the other day about how healthy I'm looking and have strongly recommended they give it a go Grin

I was thrilled that the compliments were about looking healthy rather than about looking thinner because although of course it will be great to get my weight within the normal, range, I gave this way of eating a go because I felt (without sounding dramatic) like my body was giving up. I was making myself ill with poor nutrition and constant grazing. I can't remember a time when I felt as good as this: bags of energy, no mood swings, sleeping well, no more headaches, clear skin and eyes, and practically no premenstrual symptoms this totm. I know that all this will keep me on this wol for good long after the weight loss Smile

AntiqueRose · 19/08/2015 18:37

Hi and good luck to all the newbies! That's a really impressive loss, vastknapsack! It must be lovely to hear that others are noticing your progress Smile I totally get the feeling evangelical vegan - I've convinced my friend to try 5:2 too because I was preaching enthusing about how good it has been for me. Finished my second FD of the week on 540 calories. Feels weird to think I don't need to fast again till Monday! This is definitely a WOE that I feel I can keep up long-term.

confusedandemployed · 19/08/2015 18:48

Congratulations vastknapsack! Amazing loss.
