Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had EDs you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if you've ever had EDs, or if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Well done Lamb

Welcome Maddy my fast days meals are soup for lunch and then chicken piled on a mountain of veg or a chicken stir fry, I stick to the same meals until I get bored then find something new :)

Overindulged this weekend with the BBQ and Sunday I had some serious hunger and sugar cravings so went over both days

FD today been trying to keep busy but I feel knackered today want this one over and done with quick, I'm also starting to feel the cold more now its getting chilly and already started popping the heating on

Good luck to any Monday Fasters

confusedandemployed · 22/09/2015 06:18

Morning all, I've missed lots of updates on my day or so away from the thread.

Congrats lamb, well done! I hope you have a good long rest now before training for the next one...!

Well done on all the SVs posted. This WOE is so manageable.

Yesterday was a NFD and we took DD for dinner in Pizza Express (had a voucher to use up, so two free pizzas, think you very much). I glanced at the leggera pizzas but went for a normal one as I'd not had much to eat at all. It was my only meal and stayed around TDEE having counted everything.

FD today. I woke early so I may struggle mid-morning. Thankfully I have an interview go keep me occupied.

Good luck all Tuesday fasters.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/09/2015 06:22

Morning everyone.

I think Mumsnet was rudely interrupted again for several hours yesterday, so I hope no Monday fasters were mugged by choc muffins.
How did you all get on yesterday ?

Good luck to the Tuesday fasters Smile

Morning all
Well done confused you are starting to spot stupidly big portion sizes for what they are!

Hi Bigchoc
Successful fast yesterday - got work done in the evening instead of faffing on here!

OohMrDarcy · 22/09/2015 09:14

Morning all...

completely forgot to weigh in yesterday before I ate - and I never weigh after eating!

So weighed this morning and not good news really, but still 0.5lb down over the week Sad

BUT having thought it through I can see why it went up, I think - firstly... I didn't drink nearly enough water whilst camping, I appear to have got through 2 bottles of wine in its place!

But also - eating hasn't been great over the weekend and yesterday (chinese for lunch - met up with an old colleague) and I've been a bit constipated (sorry if TMI!) probably due to the lack of water!

So - back to the grind today - with a FD, and will be a bit more mindful at the weekend, and with water EVERY day rather than just FDs.

I should remember its still a loss, and without 5:2 I'd have gained probably with a weekend camping, and chinese in the same week!

Dotty342kids · 22/09/2015 09:53

Morning all. Yesterday fell apart due to teenager related stress so my "light" eating day, before meal at Pizza Express last night went a little haywire.

Thank heavens for a FD today and Thursday to hopefully put me back on track Smile

MrDarcy - I think you should congratulate yourself on any kind of loss after a wine filled weekend away and Chinese takeaway yesterday Grin

Maddy128 · 22/09/2015 11:41

Hello again and thank you everyone who replied to me with advice!! :)
(Plus thanks for explaining that ED = eating disorders of course that makes so much sense now! )

I was going to try having my first fast day today but I have woken up with a cold and headache. Is there any rule that you should/shouldn't fast when unwell? I was thinking about using today to ease myself in gently instead of going for a full on FD straight away. Is that sensible? Any tips for battling the winter sniffles whilst 5:2ing? I usually eat hearty food and drink hot honey and lemon. Maybe a light chicken broth and leave the honey out of my hot lemon??

I've started using myfitnesspal but have realised I'm going to have to start weighing everything in order to get the calories right. Eg. Need to weigh how much peanut butter I spread on my toast!!

In general, I tend to lean towards high calorie, but filling, foods with healthy fats eg. Nut butters, avocado, eggs etc.
So it will be interesting to see how this is affected by this WOE. I think I will just have to avoid these things on FDs.
Hope everyone else avoided getting soaked in the rain today. I didn't!

Maddy128 · 22/09/2015 12:24

Ah just re-read the top post and seen that you shouldn't fast with a bad cold. Well this isn't a bad one just a winter sniffle, but I will err on the side of caution since I'm new to FDs and just have a careful day but not a full on fast.

Hellokitty105 · 22/09/2015 12:27

FD yesterday was actually easy after this weekends overload, didn't get to check in due to site being down! NFD for me today and I think I've managed to 16:8 too. Hope all today's fasters are doing well!

Aberchips · 22/09/2015 13:30

Hi, have recently re-started 5:2 again after stopping for about 6 months or so. Weighed myself after my holidays & to my horror was up to nearly 10.5 stone. Started 2 weeks again fasting Tues & Thurs, bit of a wobble last week as had a tummy bug on Sun/Mon but did ok despite this.

Previously I managed to lose around a stone & got down to just under 9 which I am comfortable at so aiming for that again. Planning to try & keep up some regular exercise as well.
Well done to everyone taking on the 5:2 WOL - it worked really well for me before so hoping I can maintain it this time!
FD today - had some Souper Greens soup for lunch & planning on homemade turkey burger & sweet potato wedges for tea!

CainInThePunting · 22/09/2015 13:57

Oops! I got up this morning and forgot I was fasting today...had four teaspoons of cold rice pudding for breakfast before I remembered.
It's not a usual breakfast for me, Blush I got it as a NFD pud for the weekend but forgot it was there until yesterday so the other half if the tin is in the fridge waiting for me.
Never mind, I'm on it now.

Dotty342kids · 22/09/2015 14:05

Oh arse. Today's gone to pot.
Never mind, will try again tomorrow Smile

OohMrDarcy · 22/09/2015 14:30

FD going ok here, had soup and a slice of bread for lunch and planning an omelette with a sprinkling of cheese and veg on the side for dinner... should come in at around 520 calories

Lots of water being drunk too so hopefully will turn out ok .... I need to try and decide to only weigh on the monday morning... but not sure how I can convince myself to do that when chances are tomorrow morning will be a nice surprise! help?!

Iamblossom · 22/09/2015 15:54

Cruised through FD yesterday, but am snacking my way through today and will definitely go over TDEE as have poker night tonight! Wine, crisps, nibbles. Will try not to go too mad....seem really hungry today for some reason, weird as not exercising at all at the moment...

BigChocFrenzy · 22/09/2015 16:02

I hope you feel better soon, Maddy That's a good idea to ease your way in.
Eat nutritious food within TDEE and drink lots of water
We say if you are too ill to fast, then you are too ill for alcohol or sweet junk ! Gives your body a chance to recover.

Welcome back, Aberchips
Once you return to goal weight, I recommend a weekly weigh-in plus a maintenance plan:
If you feturn to your old WOE, you'll return to your old weight

confusedandemployed · 22/09/2015 17:22

Hello, well this FD is going ok-ish. I'll be over 500cal I think but not by too much.

I must say I'm finding it a little more difficult since upping the exercise from 3-4 to 5-6 days per week. However I'm not beating myself up about maybe going to c.600 cals on FDs if I've done some exercise. Ho hum.

Maddy128 · 22/09/2015 17:26

Thanks BigChocFrenzy that's a very good motto! :)

OohMrDarcy · 22/09/2015 20:16

Evening all,

FD going well - have had about 2 litres of water so far, my soup and slice of bread at lunch (didn't finish the soup so less cals than thought there)

Unfortunately ended up having my omelette with the DC early as hadn't eaten with them for a while - so still have a few calories left for either a plate of veg or an options hot chocolate, but not sure I can be bothered to make either right now - pretty tired today - but I know I need lots to drink still so we'll see. Shouldn't have had dinner with the DC really - a 5pm dinner on a fast day leaves me pretty hungry for the evening!

BigChocFrenzy · 22/09/2015 21:25

How are you doing, MrD ? Nearly time for an early night ?

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 22/09/2015 22:13

I'm doing ok - not fallen off the wagon yet - but yes Christmas planning as a distraction and will be off to bed shortly!

BigChocFrenzy · 23/09/2015 08:06

Morning everyone Smile
Who's fasting today ? Let us know how you get on

OP posts:
Hellokitty105 · 23/09/2015 08:18

Think I'm going to fast today, I'll see how I feel when I'm back from the gym unless work call in the next half hour. I have work tomorrow so maybe that might be a better fast day, I'll just see how I feel and where the day takes me.

CainInThePunting · 23/09/2015 08:30

Hope your distraction techniques worked Mr Darcy?

I managed ok after my rice pudding blooper, was probably only about 40 cals.
I stayed the same on the scales but that is my norm after a fast day and I think someone else mentioned this as a pattern they had noticed too.
It is reasonably consistent that I will STS or only lose half a pound after a fast day but the after the subsequent NFDs I see a drop. So consistent that I don't even expect to see a loss these days, the overall trend is definitely downwards over the week which is what matters to me.

I think it was Swallowedafly in the earlier threads who had 'bounces' during the week so her weight was falling into a range all the time, her lows eventually became highs as the trend was downwards. Her experiences were very useful in setting my expectations for this WOL.

NFD for me and last night I was really looking forward to polishing off that rice pudding for breakfast...it's still there.
It's fascinating what a good fast does for your appetite.

OohMrDarcy · 23/09/2015 09:10

Distraction (Christmas planning) worked very well and a successful FD was had!

All NFD's this week I will be aiming to eat well but up to TDEE (or maybe a little below to allow some weekend wiggle room)

I snuck on the scales this morning and the numbers are looking happier again lol - however I am going to pinkie promise right now that I'm not going to weigh again before monday!

the DC are with their dad this weekend so I'm making lots of plans to stay busy and active too

Dotty342kids · 23/09/2015 09:15

Yesterday turned into an unmitigated disaster of evening snacking. I hold the stress of my lovely 12yr old DS turning into a lying, sneaky teenager in the last four weeks, responsible Sad

Anyway, about to have a little breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast that'll fill me up and seem ok till dinner time later.
