Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Dr Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Thanks for the greetings everyone. I said it was a supportive place. I will look up that inspirations thread and do that soon.

Cupoftea4me · 16/07/2015 22:20

Today's NFD has been interesting. No breakfast, lunch of a Thai chicken wrap and then no dinner as I snacked and decided I didn't need it. Tracking on WW I've only gone 6 points over my daily allowance which would probably match a TDEE. Before, I would definitely have had dinner too because it was 'dinner time'

Body and mind are perhaps reconditioning. (Although the choc nuts were delicious!)

DeckSwabber · 16/07/2015 22:28

Just tea today, with milk.

Tummy gurgled horribly while at the cinema this evening.

'Eyoop, Kitty, Blackburn bred, me. A Rovers fan, for my sins! Grin

Terror, I was in the RAAF for 12 years, so:
Wagga, Melbourne, Darwin, Thailand, Perth and Vietnam and Hong Kong (where I met my wife). I had friends from the old dart that I used to stay with in Nth Altona - but Perth was my favourite Oz city.

Hi mehefin - long time no see! Grin

Lovely to hear you're doing so well - this truly is a WOL for life!

Enjoy Dublin!

I do love my daily catchup with this thread - it's very life-affirming! Flowers To you all!

WellHurrahAndHuzzah · 16/07/2015 22:55

An ok day day today again here! 1 boiled egg, a mountain of lettuce, 2 large bowls of miso made with miso paste, a tiny bit of stick, soy sauce, and veg, 1x175ml dry white wine, and a small packet of popcorn.

DeckSwabber ooh my life the rumbles! I have such a noisy stomach at the best of times, it can be so embarrassing! But my usual reaction of oh god, easy something quick to shut it up! Has been replaced with meh, leave it, it'll calm down soon ;-)

Night all

Hurrah

stripytees · 16/07/2015 22:57

Breadandwine the black bean brownies are these ones.

I've successfully fed them to omnis who don't have a healthy diet in general and everyone's liked them. It's fun to make them guess what the secret ingredient is, too... (the black beans, that is!) I always make them with coconut oil, btw.

Thanks all for your comments on my gain/plateau. You are right - I am now pretty much at my lowest adult weight so it's possible that's why it's got difficult to lose now. BMI currently 22.8. Would really like to lose another 2kg but it's not the end of the world if that happens very slowly... I just don't want to end up in a situation where eating up to my measly TDEE (1470-ish, for sedentary) makes me gain.

Welcome to all the new fasters too!

confusedandemployed · 17/07/2015 06:37

stripey that recipe looks lush. I may have a go at that.
1lb off today. I'm very pleased, I feel like I've been seeing the same numbers for weeks but today was a new number Grin
NFD today but will probably do 16:8. Actually I need to: taking DD to her little friend's for a BBq this afternoon, then DP and I are having steak tonight. Yum.
I also have a Fitbit Charge HR arriving today. I really wanted the Surge but the assistant in John Lewis talked me into the £80 cheaper model as it was all I needed. He was very good. I love a fitness gadget!! I hope it arrives before I go to the gym.
Good luck Friday fasters, if there are any of you.

mrsmugoo · 17/07/2015 09:59

Today marks 20lb lost on 5:2 Grin

TerrorAustralis · 17/07/2015 11:03

mehefin well done on sticking with it for so long and your success.

mrsmugoo well done you too! Fantastic result.

breadandwine I daresay Perth's changed a wee bit since you were there. Every time we go back to visit there's more change. They're even changing the riverfront in the city to create a marina or something. But in some ways it's still just a big old country town. Some things never change, it seems.

NFD for me yesterday was going well until I had some wine with dinner. It seemed to trigger Real Hunger. So I found myself snacking after dinner. Fortunately we don't have too much junk in the kitchen, but I still managed to put away some almonds, baking chocolate chips and a biscuit.

Another NFD today. I was going to do a mini FD, but was pretty hungry when I woke up and even after exercising. (I usually exercise first thing, before breakfast.) Went out for lunch and had Japanese, which tasted like it had quite a bit of added sugar (why do they do that? I'm sure Japanese food in Japan isn't always sweet.) Still, it was pretty filling and I'll only have a light dinner tonight, but meeting up with friends later for a couple of wines.

Like some of you have said, this WOE is making me more conscious of hunger and needing versus wanting to eat. A lot of the time mild background hunger isn't bothering me. And I'm not eating for the sake of it, or because it's 'meal time'. Most of the time I'm also satisfied with smaller portions.

That said, I am coming to accept that I need to exercise most days, because I don't want to be restricted to my sedentary TDEE!

Hope all the Friday fasters are all doing well.

mrswhiskers · 17/07/2015 11:09

Well done on your loss mrs
Good to see even more new people joining the thread. It really is the most supportive thread on MN.

successful FD for me yesterday but weigh in shows no loss this week.
Had blood taken yesterday to try and find out why I am so constipated and why my hair is coming out. I also feel exhausted but unsure if this is because of the constipation (today marks the 11th day - sorry TMI!). GP advised quadrupling the dose of my normal laxative which ive done but still no sign of movement.
How much can 11 days worth of poo weigh? Grin

confusedandemployed · 17/07/2015 12:37

Oh mrswhiskers that must be miserable. I get the odd bout so I sympathise. Hope the blood tests show something simple and treatable.

Successfully managing my post-FD 16:8, time for lunch soon. Nice fasted gym session done, now the weekend starts Grin

Iamblossom · 17/07/2015 13:10

mrs it must weigh loads. You poor thing.

Another pound off this morning, God knows how. 8 11. Don't think I've been this weight in my adult life tbh!

My appetite has definitely shrunk and my portions sizes are definitely less.

Yesterday I had:

Two pieces of wholemeal toast with a boiled egg and tomatoes, delicious
Bowl of leftover vegetable chilli with a big dollop of lower fat Creme fraiche
Two big handfuls of toasted salted almonds, a couple of gins and a glass of red wine
Two skinless chicken thighs with a green salad

ErrolTheDragon · 17/07/2015 13:36

Just checking in after a bit of a gap - worrying about DH (they thought for a while he had something more serious than a hernia, but fortunately he doesn't) and then looking after him. Was going to exercise this morning but had to take DD to argos to buy her a black&decker workmate - well, isn't that what every 16yo needs at the start of the summer hols? Grin (along with the big box of electronics components which arrived yesterday). Anyway, fasting so far today OK, so getting back on track with that anyway. I need to get my head back into work again, I've been totally distracted and lacking concentration. Fortunately my manager is understanding and not pressuring me.

MrsWhiskers - those symptoms are all some of the (many) which can go with hypothyroidism, presumably they're testing for that? Hope you get a diagnosis and treatment under way soon whatever it is. Flowers

Bluetonic123 · 17/07/2015 13:36

Something very strange happened today. After 2 consecutive days fasting I thought I’d be starving. I was going to get a cheese to tomato croissant but was just not hungry this morning and totally forgot to get one and then in work canteen I went for the salad bar rather than getting the breaded fish and chips just because a big salad seemed more appealing.

This is not normal for me.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/07/2015 14:34

Congrats on your SV, MrsMugoo
20lb off must have made a big difference to your shape, what clothes you can buy and how you feel.

Well done on your SV too, Confused

Poor you, MrsW That must be so uncomfortable. I hope the quadruple dose works.
Flowers
Um, 11 days poo could weigh several pounds, so I hope you can stay very close to the loo in case of a poonami. You might want to stock up on Loo ducks, air freshener and Germaloids ointment. And a new loo brush
< yes, I belong to the Mumsnet loo brush flaunters and I'm proud of it >

OP posts:
hoppingalongsingingasong · 17/07/2015 14:35

bluetonic - think this a positive side effect of b2b FDs, the few times I've done consecutive days my appetite has dipped. Just try and avoid the weekend binge Smile or is that just me?

Mrsw that sounds awful. Hope the situation resolved itself and the scales reflect a big loss.

Good weigh in this week. 4lbs down which is great after going up last week. Hopefully if all goes to plan this week I'll be sub 12 stone probably for the first time in 4 or 5 years.

Calfon · 17/07/2015 14:41

Mehefin lovely to read your post. You are exactly (but 1" taller) what I am aiming for. Enjoy Dublin but bring your wellies. It is raining buckets in Ireland this week.

I had only one FD this week instead of the planned two. I did manage to fit in two mini fast days as well and weighed myself this morning expecting a gain (also because it is the totm) to find that I have hit 79.95 kgs. So instead of gaining I have exceed my target of 80kgs by .05kgs. In total since I started this in mid April I have lost 9kgs and I have moved from being obese to merely overweight Grin.

Next target is 75kgs and am aiming for the end of September/October and will have a holiday in August but this WOE really suits me. I still probably eat more of the wrong stuff than I should but my whole approach to food and nurturing my body has changed.

This is an amazing thread with amazing support. Thank you all Flowers.

BigChocFrenzy · 17/07/2015 15:03

Well done on your SV, Blossom* 8st 11 is excellent.
Sounds like this WOE is obviously taking you to places on your scales you thought you'd never see again
Smile
That's good news about your DH, Errol Now can you can all breathe again and relax.
Time to resume pressup fun.
Smile
That sounds like a healthy NSV, Blue Your body is probably using its fat for fuel.
Some folk find that 5:2 resets their appetite to what their body needs (some others find their body still says "cake" every day, so will have to keep an eye on how much they eat)

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 17/07/2015 15:07

Congrats on your SV, Calfon That's great news that you have dropped into a lower BMI range.
Also a healthy NSV that you have learned to value & nurture your body more.
You're on a roll and you'll crack the 75kg too

errol they are testing thyroid function. I have quite a few of the symptoms and it runs in the family. I'm half hoping it is that so that my health niggles can be resolved.

bigchoc I'm sure the inevitable poonami will occur at the most awkward moment when I am far from a toilet. I'm one of the mumsnetters who doesn't have a toilet brush too. may have to invest. ...Grin

Bluetonic123 · 17/07/2015 15:49

mrswhiskers 11 days? You must be in agony.

I hope it sorts itself out soon.

Iamblossom · 17/07/2015 17:18

It definitely is bigchoc Grin

(I also own a loo brush. 3 in fact)

m0therofdragons · 17/07/2015 17:21

Right It's official, I've been 9 stone 12 for 3 days in a row so I guess I can say it's my weight. Refused to believe it initially as I haven't been under 10 since dtds were born and they're 3.

stripytees · 17/07/2015 19:21

BigChoc as long as you never put your loo brush in the dishwasher - apparently some on MN do! Shock

Congrats everyone on your SVs and NSVs! Reading all these results no one can say 5:2 doesn't work!
