Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced by Dr Michael Mosely on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

ACRONYMS & CALCULATORS:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated (see calculators below) from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight longterm.

HOW TO START
==========

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator below as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Most prefer either to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper, or have 2 meals.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar & junk food, keep alcohol within safe limits. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • To speed up weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight, but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
====================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Research by other US and European scientists in this DailyTelegraph Article about the medicinal uses of fasting, for many serious conditions & diseases.

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Morning 5:2ers. FD for me today and just did my Salta class. A great, hard workout.
Had a wobble this morning when I woke up hungry, but that's passed now.
stripey take heart. Weight varies enormously across the month IME. I reckon I'm ovulating at the mo (TMI?) and, typically, I'm a good 1.5lb heavier because of it. The trials of womanhood.
Welcome to yet more newbies! We are a big gang now!
Good luck all other Thursday fasters

Iamblossom · 16/07/2015 11:16

stripy iirc you are pretty small already? Maybe your body is saying "this is the weight you are supposed to be?"

Major sv here: 8 12 this morning, haven't seen the scales start with an 8 for years and years and years and never got there with pure low carbing. Am delighted and now have some pounds to play with if I wish. Grin

5k run this morning. Not fasting till Monday now.

m0therofdragons · 16/07/2015 11:54

Was really good last night and stuck to no alcohol, diet coke (which I rarely drink but water seemed out of place in the group i was with. I'm trying not to tell people I'm dieting as I get so many comments of various types that I get affected by them and fail). Didn't have a dessert even though they had sticky toffee pudding which I love. Out again tonight at frankie and bennys with dc. Trying to plan in advance but can't decide yet what to have. Might just have a starter.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2015 12:19

Welcome Laura and congrats on your SV. That's an excellent start

Getting down to a lower BMI band will be a really important milestone and so motivating.
You'll probably manage sub-30 after the next 1-2 FDs, so do post and we'll all give a cheer.

Do monitor waist as well, because that can show encouraging changes and signifies visceral fat loss. At 67", your healthy target is to get below 33.5" but just keep going and it will happen.

Stripy What is your BMI ? Quite healthy IIRC. Many folk lose very slowly once in the healthy range, but even 1lb per month is progress.
Also, for women of menstruating age, a plateau has to be at least a month to count, due to hormonal fluctuations.

Ok so I've given myself a stern talking do and things are back on track.

I've had 3 black coffees, a full fat Greek yoghurt and a boat load of water and I'm feeling good!

Think I was motivated by listening to the wobbly mums at toddler group this morning talking about their latest weight loss escapades whilst munching on custard creams (only 2 syns / points etc...) and wondering why the weight just won't shift. Confused Felt like jumping in and preaching about 5:2 and NO SNACKING, EVER, but I'd never do that haha!

m0therofdragons · 16/07/2015 13:54

I've had 2 mums at school comment on how I've lost so much weight - was I really that big to start with? Yes my size 12 jeans were a bit snug but I want aware it was that obvious. I've lost 10 lbs ish so not what I would think would be shocking to people. I know I should take the compliment but I just wonder what they thought of me before when I was massive (yet still in my bmi range - just).

LauraVonSlim · 16/07/2015 14:10

Thanks everyone. I've done my two FDs this week so will measure the waist next week. I carry most of my weight on boobs, bum and hips so waist was 37" when I started. Should be below 34" soon hopefully.

m0therofdragons - I was in Frankie and Bennys the other day and had the spaghetti bolognese lighter option at 365 calories. Came with a big salad and was very filling.

m0therofdragons · 16/07/2015 14:47

Oooh do they have calories on the menu? I've had 2 coffees (well 1 and a half as I have young dc and never finished the last one) and nothing else to try to stay under tdee. Only 2 more days until holiday and scales are teetering. I'd love to comfortably be under 10 st rather than around it.

LauraVonSlim · 16/07/2015 14:59

They do where it is a 'lower calorie' option www.frankieandbennys.com/menu/main

Bluetonic123 · 16/07/2015 16:51

After my fasting fail on Monday (unexpected cake in the office and my flatmate preparing my favourite meal in the evening) I have had to fast on two consecutive days, yesterday and today.

I am feeling quite hungry now so am munching on some gherkins. This morning was really easy though and I didn't feel hungry until 2pm (where I had a delicious noodle soup made from zero noodles, prawns, a miso soup sachet and garlic, chilli and ginger)

Is fasting on two consecutive days OK? I have quite an active social life so I think that in some weeks I may have no choice. Is it OK to do it regularly or is it better to separate them?

WellHurrahAndHuzzah · 16/07/2015 17:00

Blue others are more knowledgeable Than me but I don't see why 2 in a row would be problematic! Whatever days work for you.
Another fast day today.... And I'm going to have a glass of wine :-s I do know it ain't a great idea, but this is the only other day I could fast and I NEED to celebrate someone's graduation! Had a boiled egg and lettuce so far, will have miso for tea and then a glass of wine (and attempt to avoid munchies afterwards)!

Keep going all fasters!

TalkinPeace · 16/07/2015 17:25

Bluetonic
I do not fast two days running - but I often do "mini fasts" of around 800 if I need to be strict with myself.

m0therofdragons
the other great trick when eating out is to have two starters - one as your starter and one as your main - then you are seen to be having a full meal but its much smaller.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2015 17:53

Blue No problem in principle with b2b FDs, just that the 2nd FD can feel very tough. A few tough folk do this regularly.
In fact Michelle Harvie's version of 5:2, for which she was funded by breast cancer charities, consisted of b2b FDs of 650 cals each, with Mediteranean food on the 5 NFDs. Her human trials showed better weight loss and health markers than for her control group on standard daily calorie restriction.

Bluetonic123 · 16/07/2015 18:00

Thanks - I wouldn't have done it this week if I hadn't messed Monday up! It's just good to know that I can.

My next fast day is Monday so I have a few days to recover.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/07/2015 18:00

Dragons Just enjoy the compliments NSV.

10 lb on 5:2 often makes more of a difference to your body shape than 10lb lost on conventional diets, like WW.

This is because 5:2, like other forms of intermittent fasting, usually preserves lean mass and just loses fat & water. It often targets waist fat - and lost inches there make a visible difference to your shape, as well as reducing some health risks.

You may not have noticed the gradual shape change, but someone suddenly seeing the cumulative effect will notice.

Enjoy compliments.
I complimented a friend at the gym today that she has visible calf muscles.
She is 68 and is toning up after losing 10 stone.
She nearly cried she was so chuffed.

Hellokitty105 · 16/07/2015 19:12

B&W I'm a Lancashire lass! waves

I'm away at the min all inclusive. However, I have eaten lots of fish and salad and Greek yogurt... And ice cream oooops. I have managed one fast simply because it's hot and I was sick of eating in this heat. I'm following maintainence plan, I'll update my weigh in a week on Saturday when I'm home. Bet I've gained!! Oh well I'll be back on the strict fasting wagon to get back on track. I'm really missing the gym!!

mrsmugoo · 16/07/2015 19:54

Rounding off an FD with an options hot choc after a pretty ghetto dinner of a can of tuna dumped in DS's leftover baked beans & sweet potato mash. Did log on MFP but I doubt the dinner was 350 cals so must be coming in around 500 or thereabouts.

mehefin · 16/07/2015 20:35

I haven't been on mumsnet for ages but I've wandered back so have come to say HI ! and give a bit of an update. Some familiar names around Breadandwine - remembered for night shift advice, Talkinpeace. Bigchoc and Dotty was it you who came to Pembrokeshire ? Also hello to Peplum if you're about.

I have been fasting for 2 1/2 years now. Started at 13st 13lb and am now 10st 7lb and still slowly losing weight. I'm 5ft 7 and guess my natural weight is between 9 1/2 and 10st.

I am a very laid back casual faster ! Never count a calorie, just eat one small meal on fast days. Some weeks I fast twice others once some not at all. I've always eaten healthy food but now eat less than 2/3 of what I used to on non fast days and that's plenty. And when I have a treat I am now the person who only wants one biscuit !

I have so much more energy, walk miles without a twinge in my knees and some lovely new clothes. Also a different and healthier mental energy I was settling into a heavy frumpy middle age now I'm heading to Dublin next week with 2 of my boys ( in their 20s ) to see Ed Sheeran.

If you are just starting out this is for the long term - keep going you will reap benefits you have never thought of.

To those of you who put so much effort into these threads a BIG THANK YOU.

I shall probably hang around a bit when I come on line as this is always a supportive place.

BorderWrangler · 16/07/2015 20:52

That actually sounds really nice mrsmugoo! I used to be quite partial to a big dollop of hot mash served up with a big dollop of cold tuna mayo. I can still vividly remember the look of exquisitely polite horror from my incredibly polite house mate when he first caught me eating it. But then, my first night in that house I accidentally let a pan of pasta boil over a bit, so he already had a very low opinion of my skills in the kitchen Blush

I struggled a bit today, not hungry, but more 'got the munchies'. I think it's mostly tiredness as it's been one of those weeks that just won't bloody end. Even the dog didn't want to get up this morning- she went and hid under my duvet when I got up. Managed to come in at 517 cals though, so might just hide in bed with a book before I get too tempted by cheese on toast (with hot chilli sauce ).

Thank feck it's nearly the weekend! Planning some big walks and a bit of foraging. Hoping to gather some fat hen before I hit the moors. The highlight of last weekend was a patch of crowberries. If you've ever eaten crowberries you'll know it's not that much of a highlight! Grin
