Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

BMI ( Body Mass Index ) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9
FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, any serious past or present medical condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLongo and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

Yup, avocados are super-healthy, but at 250- 380 cals each, are really for NFDs. I love them with smoked salmon and salad too.
Many folk here use Splenda for such recipes and also drink Coke Zero on FDs < dashes off thread, before talkinpeace hears ! >

Saw a friend I haven't seen for ages today and she was shocked by my weightloss (in a good way) 'But where's your tummy?" Grin She quizzed me on the 5:2 diet for ages and even took notes!!

A downside to this WOE though, I got turned away from giving blood tonight for not weighing enough. It made sense when the nurse explained it - they take the same amount of blood from everyone so the proportion of blood taken from a smaller person is much larger. They didn't want to take the risk of me feeling ill/fainting. Felt really crap though as I'm always so proud to do it. Still nabbed a biscuit on the way out though.

Meerka · 07/05/2015 21:44

I am feelign fit and ready to start again :)

I won't go mad. diet day today with a swim (havent been able to do that either, so it was really nice to go today) and that went well. Ill try another on monday

TalkinPeace · 07/05/2015 21:51

had a proper fast days to day : first one in a while

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2015 22:00

< salutes Meerka > Chest out, stomach in, quick march that woman !
A good start back with your FD and swim.
Remember to have a sensibly moderate weekend, so Monday FD doesn't have to haul back any damage.

They are both NSVs, Jimmy but your friend must have been a morale-booster. The blood donation limit is 50kg (blood.co.uk) - are you very short to be under that weight limit, or did they apply a safety margin above that ?

Fasters, clean your teeth and go to bed ! The election probably won't be decided by the time you get up tomorrow.
Anyway, politicians trying to put together coalitions reminds me of drunks leaning against each other for support.

THe exit polls have quite put me off the thought of food.
Fingers, toes and eyes crossed that they are wrong.

mildlyacquiescent · 07/05/2015 23:34

Shite. These exit polls have robbed me of my appetite.

Breadandwine · 08/05/2015 01:01

ATM, I'm channel swapping to avoid those smug Tory faces (sound is switched off!). [despair]

I'm just looking at what alcoholic beverage I can have to dull the pain:
Homemade stout
Homemade red wine
Rather nice bottle of Cotes du Rhone (but I wouldn't want to broach that on my own)
Benedictine

Just watched that appalling Kay Burley on Sky. Awful.

Farage looks to be in trouble - every cloud and all that! Grin

I've gone for a tumbler of iced Benedictine on the grounds that it's the least likely to drive me to find something to eat. Confused

Just caught up with reading the thread - some lovely SVs and NSVs which has cheered me up a bit.

Gonna be a long night…

Sad
TalkinPeace · 08/05/2015 07:25

Well fasting will be easy for a few weeks.
The election result has broken my faith in UK democracy - and it cost me over £2000 to get the vote here.

MrsStevenPatrickMorrissey · 08/05/2015 09:05

Morning all, have caught up on the thread, well done on all the SV & nsv, everyone's doing great.

I've had an awful week, dd3 was admitted to hospital on Monday night and we finally got home lastnight. Still don't exactly what was wrong, they are putting it down to a viral infection but her temp went sky high and would not come down, she stopped eating and drinking and got very dehydrated very quickly so have spent the week sleeping on the floor beside her bed, eating mainly rubbish (hospital food is not conducive to good health!) but she is on the mend which is the main thing. Will have a FD on Monday again, I feel awful from lack of sleep, lack of exercise and just generally not eating well. I'm looking forward to getting back to normal. Have a good weekend everyone, will check in on Monday Smile have a good FD today Friday fasters!

Commiserations on the election results.....

LemonYellowSun · 08/05/2015 09:08

So when do you weigh? I always did it before you first fast of the week - I guess as it was the start. However as I discovered this morning, weighing in the morning after a fast day gives better results Grin

mildlyacquiescent · 08/05/2015 09:19

FD today. Going to up the exercise, maybe kickboxing with Cameron's loathsome face in front of me.

mrswhiskers · 08/05/2015 09:54

Good morning everyone.
Well , yesterday's FD was the first one I've done where I really struggled. By the end of the day I could hardly put one foot in front of the other and ended up in bed at 9pm. I definitely made a mistake by eating my 500 calories by lunchtime. won't be doing that again!
This morning I felt a bit better, did my usual C25K then 3 circuits of BFBM and now I feel great! Just broke my fast with a fruit/yoghurt/oat smoothie and I feel stuffed Grin So glad I saw out the FD yesterday and didn't wimp out of my workouts today.
Hope all fasters and non-fasters have a great day. Smile

HotSweetTea · 08/05/2015 10:03

Sorry to hear about your poor DD, MrsMoz. I hope she has made a full recovery and is not Still Ill. Sounds like you have had a difficult week. Flowers

I had a major fail yesterday. Was doing really well - falafel for lunch (under 200cals). PLanned to go to the gym and have steak and veg for dinner. I went to the pub for a pint and burger instead...

I'm not very good at this

BigChocFrenzy · 08/05/2015 12:24

Best wishes to your poorly DD, MrsSteven
Flowers
and poor you as well, such a tough and scary week. Now the worst is over and you can relax a bit

Lemon I recommend weighing after the 2nd FD of every week (or every 2 or 4 weeks, as you prefer)
Consistency and identical conditions are important, so first thing after you morning loo, before even a glass of water, weigh yourself naked, scales always in the same position in the same corner of the room.

JimmyCorkhill · 08/05/2015 13:40

MrsSteven sending you and your DD good wishes.

BigChoc I am very short Grin 5ft 1" I was only just under the limit of 50kg but I totally respect their rule. I think I look thinner than I actually am though as I lose my weight from my face and chest. If you only saw me from the tummy down I would look much larger.

I have a BMI of 20.5 and according to the NHS site I am near the middle of the healthy weight range. I am starting to get the comments of "you need to stop losing weight now" and I have DH under strict instructions to be blunt with me when I look too thin. It's hard to gauge the sincerity of some comments plus someone said on this thread ages ago that we have lost sight of what a healthy weight looks like.

I'm actually 'maintaining' now, or learning to.

confusedandemployed · 08/05/2015 13:45

MrsSPM I hope your DD makes a speedy recovery. Resilient little things, they are.
Well I had a fab 3rd hen night, woke up with a stonking hangover and to find the sodding Tories gurning all over the TV Angry It has NOT made my day.
Didn't get up til midday and have only had a ham sarnie, so planning a pizza tonight and should still be within TDEE.
One good thing about a hangover....lost 2lb this morning Grin don't worry BigChoc, I know it'll be back on by tomorrow!

igivein · 08/05/2015 14:40

Hi Everyone
So good to see so many newbies joining!
Weigh-in time. Week 18, loss less than half a pound, so I'm calling it zero. Total loss therefore still 47lbs.
Don't know what went wrong there, maybe it's balancing out from the 4lb loss last week. But I have to admit, I've felt HUNGRY this week, so probably just ate far too much.
Thank the Lord for 5:2 though, because without the two fasts I would have gained this week (goes off to read thread whistling 'always look on the bright side of life' ...).

mrsmugoo · 08/05/2015 15:35

I got through my first FD yesterday and feel quietly confident about doing this long term now - I found it very manageable. I think I'll skip breakfast next FD though and just have larger lunch. Also I think I'll do soup in the day and save my protein based meal for evening. Water and black coffee were my saviours.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/05/2015 16:12

igivein - that's right. Most of us got overweight by gradually gaining weight, so compared to that, stepping downwards with stops on the way is much better, isn't it.

Going to bro's wedding tomorrow, so I shall probably eat to sustain myself on the drive to and fro and at the reception. But I will have an FD on monday. Smile

mildlyacquiescent · 08/05/2015 16:54

Sorry, MrsSteven, somehow missed your post about your poor DD. You must have both been relieved to get home again. Hope she's feeling better x

Fab stuff, Jimmy... you're tiny! Great nsv :)

Confused, I have never heard of so many hen nights. That's fabulous.

Errol, enjoy the wedding! My brother is getting married soon, too... sad to think of him growing up. He's only 41. SadGrin

mildlyacquiescent · 08/05/2015 17:06

igivein

That is so true. I seldom stick to just 500 cals, but attempting this WOE has helped me start losing afagain and has curtailed my snacking habit.

Saw the dentist today. Eek. He gave me such a telling off for my sugar-loving ways and told me exactly what I'd been eating and drinking. I promised to give up choccie and sugar so hopefully that'll have knock-on positive effects for my overall health. Tbh given the cost of the wirk I need doing next week I won't be able to afford junk food anyway.

igivein · 08/05/2015 17:48

Sorry to hear about your week Mrs SPM, hope you're both feeling better now!
Also thanks for the positive vibes Errol - you're right, generally downwards is the way to go!

confusedandemployed · 08/05/2015 18:10

mildly it has been a bit OTT. First one was a surprise, second one was 'planned' and involved my oldest friends (two of whom I've known since I was 2) and last night's was with newer local friends. I am looking forward to DD going to bed and collapsing on the sofa with my pizza! Good luck on giving up choccy. Since starting 5:2 my sweet tooth has really diminished.
Errol have a fab time tomorrow!
