Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

5:2 Thread number 51: Whoever said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" obviously never tasted ice cream or chocolate ! 5:2 is for those who enjoy good food and don't want to diet every damn day

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8
Smile
The 5:2 diet was introduced on BBC Horizon on August 2012:
Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally" means somewhere around the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

For most folk, 5:2 results in a weekly 3,000 calorie deficit, so averages 1 lb loss. However, some folk may lose much more quickly / slowly, or in fits & starts.
Initial weight loss may be much quicker, especially if you have a lot of weight to lose.

When you are within a healthy BMI range and just want to trim a few more lb, progress may be much slower and you may need to monitor carefully that you don't average above TDEE on non-fast days.

Acronyms & Calculators:

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight normally needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

4:3 = fast on 3 non-consecutive days per week

ADF (Alternate-Day Fasting) = fast every other day

FD = Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men) or 1000 cals for BF
If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful website or app to track food & drink caloriesi

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, new skinny jeans

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day. TDEE is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this over the week's NFDs.

To speed up your weight loss and to train yourself how to eat on maintenance,
optionally calculate the lower TDEE for goal weight,
but eat to current weight TDEE at least 1 day per week.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that to maintain our new healthy weight longterm requires a permanent change in how we eat.

How to Start

. Take initial measurements: weight, waist, hips
. Use TDEE calculator above as a rough guide to how much to eat on NFDs
. Choose any 2 days for FDs, non-consecutive is easier.
. Before each FD: plan, shop & calorie count ALL food & drink for the day

FAQs / Tips:

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: If possible, choose days when you are busy, but not preparing meals for others.Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice.
Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Many prefer to skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar and junk food. A few treats per week are good though!
Aim for TDEE, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily
  • SLEEP: Try to get enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss - BUT only if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat.
HIIT and resistance training both work well with 5:2/IF. If you exercise, do NOT increase FD cals
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have past or present EDs, fever, stomach bug, even a bad cold.
When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks, alcohol
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Scientific Evidence for Fasting
==================

BBC article on the Horizon program

Telegraph comments on 5:2 and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley, useful for newbies.

This InterviewPart1 and InterviewPart2 with leading ADF researcher Dr Varady explains why fasting helps you to lose weight AND improves some health markers.

A science Study specifically addressed the effect of this diet on obese men & women, wrt health and weight loss:

"... After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant."
i.e. almost all the weight lost was fat, not muscle, which is unusually good for a diet.

It also describes improved blood values:
"Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%)."

Dr Michelle Harvie (funded by cancer charities) showed possible benefits of intermittent fasting compared to standard daily calorie reduction in her trials with women at high risk of breast cancer: ComparingDiets , EarlierResearch52

Dr Johnson showed intermittent fasting helped Asthma

Why Intermittent Fasting Works: Mattson , BlackSwan and Hormesis

Recent research into the health benefits of fasting: e.g. by world-respected neuroscientist Dr MarkMattson showed:
. Improved glucose regulation
. Loss of abdominal fat with maintenance of muscle mass
. Reduced blood pressure and heart rate
. Improved learning and memory and motor function
. Protection of neurons in the brain against dysfunction and degeneration in animal models of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and Huntington’s disease.

Some of his research is in HealthyAging , Health , AvoidParkinsonsDisease
Also this ScientificDiscussion MoselyMattsonLomgo , and a LongoInterview

Recent trials with Type 2 diabetics and those at risk of having it used a form of daily fasting - skipping supper.
Their conclusions: eating 1-2 meals per day is better than several small meals for losing weight and controlling insulin levels, see Type2Paper

chevron Im struggling with cakes too. can happily leave the end cake but the butter-and-sugar stage is more than I can manage without eating some Blush. wouldnt dare make one today ... that woudl be it, fast broken.

am finding that on a fast day or even the day after a fast, I don't feel hungry at breakfast time so I'm waiting until lunchtime then eating a handful of raspberries and/or blueberries and/or (if i can find them) strawberries. That seems to carry me through.

Am really wanting to loose the weight but have to try to slow down and take it slow and steady.

Slightly to my surprise though my belt needs a new hole punching it it. Don't know why since I had a 2 week break from both dieting and exercise cause of the fever. Not lost any weight either, just that the belt seems too big. Odd (but nice).

mrswhiskers · 19/03/2015 14:01

Have just done level 3 of the shred and wasn't as exhausted as usual (muscles still hurt though!)
not sure if it's because I'm fasting or because I was constantly checking my heart rate with my new (but rather dodgy) HRM.

CheshireSplat · 19/03/2015 16:05

Hi all.

[waves at Mrs Morrissey]

Well, after a good FD yesterday (had a 250 cal massive veg and noodle stir fry with ginger, garlic, chilli, lemongrass, soy sauce and it was DELISH) I weighed myself this morning and was 1 lb less than before my blow out holiday. I don't understand but am happy! I was more active, walking (albeit at pre-schooler pace) for a week whilst on holiday so maybe it is a genuine loss. Anyway I'm at 11 stone 2 having bumbled between 11 stone 5 and 11 stone 3 all March.

So am delighted. Meera, a bit like you not sure how I've lost but I have.

FD number 2 for me tomorrow as DH is going skiing for the weekend lucky bugger would never normally do a Friday as I do like my Friday drinks... Grin

MrsHarryRamsden · 19/03/2015 16:51

Weighed in this morning and I am 11.5 lbs down after 4 weeks Smile

Lost about half a stone in the first 10 days or so and settled into 2lbs a week for the last while. I am delighted but still have several stone to go, keep reminding myself it's not a sprint it's a marathon...

MrsHarryRamsden · 19/03/2015 16:53

Oops, forgot to say well done to everyone on this thread, it's seeing everyone else's success which helps keep me confident this wol is both sustainable and right for me x

mrswhiskers · 19/03/2015 17:01

Well done mrsharry that's a great loss!

TalkinPeace · 19/03/2015 17:36

MrsHarry
Its a marathon and if you get it right you'll never have to run it again Grin

MeerkaRIPSirTerry · 19/03/2015 17:57

you're 11.5 lb down after 4 weeks? that's brilliant! congrats =) I guess it will steady down but that is such a good start!

MrsHarryRamsden · 19/03/2015 18:08

Awww, thanks everyone! Grin

Beginning this diet coincided with lent and I have given up sweets, crisps, biscuits, chocolate and fizzy drinks. Oh, and snacking...so to say I have changed the way i eat is an understatement!

I used to rarely eat full meals, rarely felt properly hungry as I just used to just graze all day.

This way of eating has revolutionised my attitude towards food, long may it last!!

chevronstripes · 19/03/2015 18:12

Well done Harry that is amazing - you can afford for it to slow down quite a bit and still be doing well. Any top tips to share,?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2015 18:13

Excellent start and SV, MrsHarry As you've a lot to lose, 2 lb is a good weekly average.

Hope your cold go soon, Carrot, Handmini

Try not to feel guilty EVER about food. We all make the changes we can and find what system works best for us.

Hang on until supper, Thursday fasters
< I won't describe the delicious apple, Calvados & almond tarte flambe I am currently enjoying in my fav award-winning restaurant. Exits thread, munching happily >

Another FD done

Wow mrsHR well done you, that's good going, I was feeling a bit [meh] about continuing fasting the last few days, hit a bit of a wobble mentally with it, but reading your pist has spured me on again Wink...

Well done on your weight loss too splat I'm nearly tempted to weigh in the morning...and just well done everyone on this thread, your a great bunch Smile don't think I'd still be going with this if I didn't have here to come to and get inspired and get great advice from...right off for a run in a bit, trying to block out thoughts of bigchocs almond tart mmmmmmmm[homerstyledrool] Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2015 18:53

Well done, MrsS Now close the kitchen and clean your teeth, to avoid temptation

bigchoc there is a streak of cruelty in you ... :p

mildlyacquiescent · 19/03/2015 19:51

Congrats to all who have posted losses. You are all very inspiring!

Stuffed up my NFD by eating closer to 1900 than 1700, but hopefully it won't result in a gain, at any rate. Might do 4:3 this week to kickstart things, anyway. If you do 4:3, does your number of calories on NFDs go up accordingly?

CarbeDiem · 19/03/2015 20:59

Wow! MrsHarry - that's a fab loss, well done.
You too Splat

Meerka - have you lost inches if not the weight? Do you measure yourself?
Well done though whatever it is, belts don't lie ;)

Hope those who aren't well recover quickly.

Mmm your dessert sounds lovely Big I'm particularly drooling at the almonds part :)
There's a bakery here that make an almond croissant - it must weigh half a kilo, and is stuffed full marzipan and decorated with almonds - I'm afraid to imagine how many calories is in one and I've eaten quite a few in the past Thank God it's closed at this exact moment :)

MeerkaRIPSirTerry · 19/03/2015 21:08

It must be something off the waist mustn't it? I did measure around the bellybutton and it was 99cm and now it's 97cm .. doesnt seem much. But as you say, well, the belt doesn't lie! :)

mmmmmm that sounds absolutely gorgeous .. .almond croissant ....

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2015 21:35

Well done Meerka, Splat

I had a lovely 5-course meal out and since your FDs are over now, this is the apple, Calvados (very boozy !) & almond tarte flambé:

5:2 Thread number 51: Whoever said "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" obviously never tasted ice cream or chocolate ! 5:2 is for those who enjoy good food and don't want to diet every damn day

CarbeDiem · 19/03/2015 21:40

Meerka - 2 cms is quite a bit of shrink, well done!

Big - Mmm looks lovely, I can almost taste the almonds maybe if I lick the screen

BigChocFrenzy · 19/03/2015 21:48

mildlyacquiescent I suggest you stick with 5:2 for a couple of weeks and get used to fasting, then review progress. You will have a better idea then of your rate of loss with 2 FDs.

banananugget · 20/03/2015 07:05

Hi, I'd like to join please. Having read some of the thread you're all doing so well! I'd love some of that motivation to rub off on me! Am going to fast today to kick start things, know it will never happen if I wait until Monday!

mrswhiskers · 20/03/2015 07:20

completed my second fast day yesterday. weigh in this morning revealed I've lost my last stubborn 2lbs!

mildlyacquiescent · 20/03/2015 07:52

Thanks for the tips. I think I'll just eat lightly today rather than another fast then.

Well done, mrswhiskers! It must feel great to be where you are.

Welcome banana- am new myself, and definitely finding these threads a great read. There's a nice one by breadandwine which harvests a lot of advice and wisdom from earlier threads here. Good luck! Btw, I didn't manage my first two attempts at a FD. The lovely thing about this way of eating is that you can shrug it off and just move your fast day to the next one. No guilt (or not much!)! :)

CheshireSplat · 20/03/2015 07:59

Morning Banana. Welcome!

I'm fasting today too. Good luck. I found my first FD quite exhilarating.

CarrotPuff · 20/03/2015 08:04

Handmini I hope your cold gets better soon.

Welcome Banana! There's no better day like today! Good luck!

My fast yesterday finished at about 470 cals. Didn't eat until dinner as didn't feel hungry at all. Although was starting to feel a bit lightheaded just before meal.

So I've lost those 2.5lbs that I've put on last week - must have been water retention after all. And then another 1lb on top of that. Yay! Smile

On the down side, I have horribly upset stomach today... Not sure where it came from, but I hope it passes soon...
