HIIT is excellent for increasing fitness quickly. It works very well with 5:2 / IF, can also help correct metabolic issues and accelerate weight loss.
I've posted several HIIT routines on the 52ExerciseThread2

However, at least 80% of weight loss on any regime is obtained by reducing calories, so aim to eat within TDEE on NFDs.

I do HIIT 3-4 x weekly: boxing with Tabata, spin and circuits.
