The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Didn't get a chance to post yesterday but I weighed in. 6lbs lighter! So pleased. On another FD today and just having a cup of bovril, then making veggie mince spag Bol for tea. Have been to the gym 3 times in the last week too, so am feeling really rather motivated.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2015 12:48

Well done, fieldfare Excellent start

OP posts:
TalkinPeace · 13/01/2015 12:57

fcuk
I'll second what Bigchoc says - chances are your NFD portions are bigger than your body actually needs.
Best thing is to log what you eat onto MFP - weighing every portion size and see where the hidden calories are.

fieldfare and other newbies
WELL DONE

but do remember, weight is just a number.

Fcukfifa · 13/01/2015 13:45

Thank you for the all the advice Flowers

I've just done my bmi which is 23.3 so pretty normal.
I'm due to start my period and also stopping breastfeeding my youngest (boobs are like boulders!) so maybe all of this combined could be taking a toll.

Your probably right about the portion sizes, I had a huge Sunday dinner at weekend Blush

But last night I did stop eating my meal when I was full, which totally goes against the grain of my childhood!

Thanks again ladies, such a massive help!! X

Fcukfifa · 13/01/2015 13:46

Oh and fieldfare, wow amazing loss!!

Dotty342kids · 13/01/2015 14:54

wow fieldfare that's brilliant Smile

So, I've gathered from the Horizon programme thread that they advise fasting on two consecutive days........... anyone considered doing that / done it?

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2015 16:19

Dotty
A couple have - but frankly its too much like hard work.
I regularly go 24 hours without food - just mugs of tea
and then have a decent supper or a small one
but 48 is not fun

ALSO, they were just hanging around while fasting - much better to be busy / at the gym / working - as then the time passes much easier

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2015 20:04

Well I just broke my first proper fast of 2015.
24 hours of tea and then a humungous bowl of veg soup, a slice of bread and butter and a banana = 520 calories.
Should make a dent in the 6lb of Christmas / holiday bulge I need to shift.

fieldfare · 13/01/2015 20:20

Thanks everyone!
Fcuk, I gain about 3-4lbs when my period is due, so combine that with your boobs being fit to burst and you're carrying a lot of extra fluid.

Most of my loss was water, now the hard work starts - to keep it going. I need to get the tape measure out and take my measurements actually.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2015 21:44

Fcuk At BMI 23.3, you won't lose as quickly as folk who are very overweight, because ntbo, you have far less fat to lose
So, you have to be much more careful than they do wrt NFD calories.

dwarfrabbit · 13/01/2015 21:45

talkinpeace. well done you. on monday i did the same and finished the day off with vast vat of veggie soup. today i have had a normal day - allbran, creamy soup and twirl bar - naughty but lovely - veg curry and rice tonight and then fasting again tomorrow. apart from twirl, i didn't snack today as I am trying to consciously eat during normal days.
people at work seem to be lining up to tell me this is a crazy way to lose weight. very glad i have you gals. i loved the motivation thread above.

TalkinPeace · 13/01/2015 21:51

dwarfrabbit
when - like those of us who have been here since thread 3 - you have been lean and mean for two years, the people at work will ask for your advice Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2015 22:01

Many women doing 5:2 will drop a few lb after their period (if they still have periods) due to releasing extra water retained during the period.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 13/01/2015 22:07

Ignore any sabotagers in your social circle and just carry on.

Far too many "know-it-alls" haven't read any scientific research and wouldn't understand it if they did. They are just regurgitating tabloid fluff.
Others see you are being strong and doing something about your weight, which they feel unable to do, so they feel threatened.

OP posts:
MelanieCheeks · 14/01/2015 08:57

The Horizon programme's version of Intermittent Fasting isn't quite the same as the 5:2 we know and love - but it is nice to see it being used as a valid dieting approach in a science programme. I'd use that to counter any critics.

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2015 09:20

Hmm, so my scales are behaving more normally this morning. Even after fasting yesterday, I'm still 1lb up on last week Sad
However, I have diligently planned on MFP for today's meals and with some nice food lined up I'm well under TDEE so can have a chocolate cookie that the kids made at the weekend. Yay!

veryseriousgirl · 14/01/2015 10:45

Morning all! Very impressed by the courgetti - will have to look in to spiralisers / julienne peelers myself.

Fasting today - have had coffee so far and having a nice bit of dinner tonight, so feeling quite good.

BigChoc, I don't think I've said it ever, but thanks so much for setting up the threads and providing so much good advice. You make this so much easier!

I have now officially lost all my Christmas weight and am back to where I started at the beginning of December. Hooray. I slightly over-indulged on Mexican food last night (home-made, so not as bad as it could have been), but think I just managed to stay within TDEE by staying off the booze.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/01/2015 11:53

veryserious Thanks, but I'm just continuing what real old-timers like tip, b&w, Betsy originally started.

Well done on losing your Xmas weight

Hello everyone!
I started 5:2 at the beginning of the month. Lost 6lb the first week and 2lb this week.
Hoping to gain the motivation i need to see this through from you guys here!

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2015 13:12

Well done Alem, that's a great start!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/01/2015 13:14

Welcome, Alem Well done, 8lb in 2 weeks is an excellent start
Smile

fieldfare · 14/01/2015 13:25

Well done Alem!

It was like dh was trying to sabotage me on a FD last night. After a delicious dinner, he sat there snacking away and it was a really crunchy, juicy apple that did me in. I ended up having half a small punnet of cherries and then going to bed!

dwarfrabbit · 14/01/2015 14:02

well done Alem - anybody who has done it longer than I have ( one fast, one normal and another fast today...) is my role model! So glad that it is working out for you. and 8lbs in two weeks is a shed load! That's two bags of sugar for goodness sake!

Breadandwine · 14/01/2015 14:11

My invention is the 52ExerciseThread2 so pop over there, anyone looking for exercise ideas & support.

In support of BC I'd like to say that in the last 14 months, as a result of taking her advice, I've:

Increased my lung capacity by 5%
Become an inch taller
Improved my posture

And actually developed some muscles!Grin

Dotty342kids · 14/01/2015 15:11

woohoo, have just worked out the cals for a really nice veggie chilli that I make, with (as today's not a FD) a good portion of rice, some natural yoghurt and healthy dollop of grated cheese and still have enough cals to have a bar of Dairy Milk later this evening AND still be well within TDEE.

I do love MFP. Tomorrow will be same veggie chilli but without the cheese which brings it down to approx. 520 cals Smile

breadandwine that's great news - though I'm dying to know how you became taller! I could do with an extra inch myself too!
