The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Sugar is responsible for a great deal of our lower belly bulge, Just. You say you're a healthy eater, but alcohol has a fairly high sugar content. By cutting down you'll see a difference in your stomach fairly quickly. Why not pop over to the exercise thread where our resident guru BC will give you some exercise tips?

Let me know how you get on with those muffins B&W. I was wondering if there was an alternative to adding sugar? I'm not sure how much honey you would add instead?

Been tallying up my eating for the week:

  • 3 FD
  • 1 mini-FD
  • 2 days at goal weight TDEE
  • 1 day where I restricted myself during the day, but didn't count in the evening
  • 3 bootcamp classes

Realistically I know that to lose the last 13lb this is how I need to eat and it's been easy this week. I don't think it will stay easy for long though!

TheHoneyBadger · 09/11/2014 09:44

Maz i think it's different to how you perceived - that rather than 'it needs a prescription' to get it there it's that it's medically recognised enough that doctors will prescribe if you see what i mean. not that it merits a prescription because of any risk but that it is proven useful enough for doctors to prescribe it. also whereas some countries take female health issues seriously as something that can be addressed the UK tends towards the 'it's all natural' type approach ime or prescribes the pill.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2014 11:23

Flaxmeal is of course a cereal, very good for women, but rather bitter on its own, so I mix it with oat bran and cinammon or Manuka honey

H&B sell a combination of Evening Primrose Oil and Starflower.
Maz My little tub says 3 capsules totalling 3000 mg per day, so I'm not surprised 1500mg didn't work.

If you post on the exercise thread what you currently do and whether you prefer gym, outdoors or home, then I can suggest a program

AgnusCastus looks safe enough for most women, but do not take if pregnant or BFing

Evening Primrose Oil seems OK while BFing, but don't take it or any other supplement during pregnancy without consulting your own Dr or MW

MazzleDazzle · 09/11/2014 18:16

Ah, I see Honey - other countries are so convinced by the benefits that it's routinely prescribed. I double checked my Evening Primrose tub and it's actually only 1000mg, but says one a day! Going to up my dose to 3 a day. Hooray! I'll never be a snappy ravenous cow again! Unless I have another baby Grin.

Just finished my dinner - bolognaise on wilted spinach with chargrilled courgette. Still got 230 calories of my TDEE left, but had a bag of crisps and a kitkat earlier, so really don't want to spend them on junk. I may save them for another day.

Double bootcamp and FD tomorrow for me! Who else is fasting tomorrow?

JollyGolightly · 09/11/2014 19:49

Hello all, I've been away from this thread for a while - even allowing for the dodginess of my ancient scales, I seem to have lost half a stone at the very least, in 3 weeks of IF. Very pleased, finding it increasingly easy and very satisfying.

However, I've just discovered that I am pregnant. The book says it's not suitable in pregnancy but doesn't give any reasons - I know the advice is always very cautious but I'm feeling well and have been doing it without being aware of the pregnancy so far, without feeling any ill effects. Is anyone aware of the medical reasons why I shouldn't carry on for a bit (I do have the weight to lose).

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 09/11/2014 20:49

Hmph. I am coming to the conclusion that I eat far too much. This shouldn't be the surprise that it is to me! It does mean that I can't be trusted on a NFD. How am I not the size of a house? I appear to average about 2500 calories per day if left to eat 'normally'. My TDEE is 1880, or 1700 for my goal weight. Sad and Blush I was merrily going along thinking that I just had to lose the baby weight, but apparently I need rethink that.

Jolly, congratulations! How lovely! Not sure about continuing with fasting, although I can't really think of a medical reason why not - after all, people with hyperemesis can't keep much down. But I am absolutely not an expert, so don't go on what I say. Tbh, I always start pregnancy full of good intentions about healthy eating and by approximately week 8 I'm so shattered that my intentions go out of the window and I start mainlining chocolate whatever's handiest instead.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/11/2014 21:05

Jolly Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Stop 5:2 until you can consult your doctor about whether you should continue.
In the meantime, just eat to TDEE daily, cutting out alcohol completely and really cutting down on treats made with sugar. Eat plenty of protein, veg, complex carbs, fruit.

Weight loss via reduction of calories below TDEE and / or restricting carbs - is NOT recommended in pregnancy except under medical advice.
So this holds for IF / 5:2, WW, daily CR, low carbing etc

Epigeneticists say there is evidence that restricting calories, especially carbs, in pregnancy modifies the expression of the baby's RXRA gene, increasing the risk of the baby being obese from childhood onwards.
This epigenetic change is hereditary, so grandchildren etc affected.

Your baby needs very few calories in the early stages and you have plenty of fat reserves, so no isssues atm . Just consult your GP before continuing.

JollyGolightly · 09/11/2014 22:11

Thanks both.

Bigchoc those articles were interesting, thank you. It seems that higher GI/GL is more of an issue, unless I am misunderstanding. I doubt I could continue for very long anyway, TBH - it's just that I'm feeling so good on it at the moment that it seems a shame to change things, but I will consult the doctor.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/11/2014 10:12

morning all. i'm wobbly saying that today is going to be a fast day Grin such confidence eh?

have only bounced up just over a pound from lowest point so fairly confident last weeks weight loss was 'real' as such but also aware it'll soon be back if i don't keep it up.

congrats on pregnancy jolly

InfinitySeven · 10/11/2014 12:05

Congratulations, Jolly!

Morning everyone. Feel terrible again today...I seem to be plagued by headaches at the moment, and I had a pretty bad reaction to the steroid injections for my wrists.

Tried making cinnamon swirls with DP yesterday, but ran out of plain flour, so added self-raising. Had also put yeast in, so you can imagine what happened... He was pretty disappointed, so I've just walked to the supermarket to replace the ingredients, and I'll have a go at making them while he is at work today, if I feel up to it.

It's a fast day, which will make it a little more difficult, but I've got no appetite as yet, and I've got my meal planned out for later. I'm looking forward to it.

Good luck to everyone else fasting today :)

BigChocFrenzy · 10/11/2014 12:45

Monday fasters: Stay strong on this cold, rainy day
Have plenty of Brew and post whenever you need support.

Infinity Have you tried the Marmite ? I also find a small glass of beg juice helps, e.g. V8 [I need a "cba to squeeze" emoticon Blush ]

Cheddar, Honey You need to average TDEE on NFDs for several weeks, so that you retain the FD deficit. If your "normal eating" is much more than TDEE, this explains the weight gain.
This also trains you to eat appropriate portions for maintenance - after all this effort, you don't want to regain.

Hi everyone, sorry I didn't update.

Blood was from around my bum with it being so sore :( Not surprising really. Felt better Sat afternoon through till yesterday evening then about 6pm I suddenly kept having waves of agonising stomach pain - honestly it was worse than labour. My body was pushing for me. Pushed so hard that I've now got piles :( I then fainted a little while later.

Been to the doctors this morning and they think it's a bad case of gastroenteritis. All I can do it rest impossible with two DC and drink fluids. I can't have another week like last week of doing nothing so I am doing things slowly today. Must go to town in a bit.

Checked scales on Friday and I was 11.9, so that's 5lb down. Majority of that down to being ill.

Ps that muffin looks lovely Grin

TheHoneyBadger · 10/11/2014 15:06

3pm and as yet to break my fast - do keep looking at the clock now though!

i don't hold that weight loss via this WOE is achieved by a calorie deficit - that is not my understanding of it or experience personally bigchoc. i always have a little bounce back up and i partly put it down to having more in the digestive tract and more water retained as part of that digestive process again after a day of normal eating than i would have immediately after a good fast.

four bless you! take it easy and don't forget to drink plenty of liquids.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/11/2014 15:08

Ouch, sorry to hear that, four
Several folk in my neighbourhood and office have had bad gastric flu or similar. Most also seem to have small DCs
Hmm
Do keep drinking water, because that is mostly what you are losing.Resting is tough, especially if noone else to step in and take the load.
Remember, don't fast for at least 1 week after you feel 100%.
< Sending good healthy vibes your way >

TalkinPeace · 10/11/2014 15:28

Honeybadger
The only way to lose weight on any system at all ever ever
is to take in less calories than your body is using
Anybody who tells you otherwise has a very poor understanding of physics and Chemistry.

WHAT and HOW you eat will have a massive impact on how your body deals with that deficit, long term and short term
and on how your brain adjusts to it

but if you have no calorie shortfall, your weight will not drop

jellypi3 · 10/11/2014 15:41

Hope you feel better soon Four

I've had a few reallly bad days, Pizza, Kebabs, more Pizza, chocolate, latte's! I think I'm going to fast for a week lol! Will do 3 days this week I think, Tues, Weds and Fri!

annielewis · 10/11/2014 16:14

Hi everyone - I've had a bi of a disaster weekend too and not fasted today because I am hungover!! Too much prosecco!

four that sounds horrendous! Hope you feel better soon.

Jolly congrats! We are sort of trying to get pregnant too (or rather not trying NOT to iyswim) - I've heard that this WOL can actually be good for TTC.. good luck woth pregnancy.

Need to go over to the exercise thread I think and get some inspiration. Think I'll have a FD tomorrow as rest of week is looking potentially difficult to fast as family are arriving ready for funeral on Thurs. Next possible option will likely be friday or saturday

Anyone else planning to fast tomorrow?

TheHoneyBadger · 10/11/2014 16:14

that's very different to what the evidence found in the initial documentary isn't it TIP? they found people weren't sticking to their TDEE on non fast days and that the weight lost wasn't attributable to a simple calorie deficit.

i'm not eating over my tdee anyway so it's all a bit academic in terms of my weight but i remember that being one of the interesting factors of this WOE - that it couldn't be explained simply by calorie deficits.

TalkinPeace · 10/11/2014 16:48

Honey
THe original documentary made no mention of TDEE
and was not looking at overweight people
MM started looking into fasting to reduce his chance of dying young because he discovered he was Fat on the Inside, Thin on the Outside.

He was already eating at roughly his TDEE so when he cut his calories by fasting twice a week he lost weight

that it couldn't be explained simply by calorie deficits.
Yes it can, and it is.
I do not remember anything about that in the programme
and I watched it both at the time and then five weeks later when I started 5:2 after a family bereavement made DH and I assess our risks of stroke.

TheHoneyBadger · 10/11/2014 16:51

do you not remember him looking at what people ate on non fast days and worrying that people would eat too much? i remember a scene of them eating bugers at a drive through in the car. i perhaps need to rewatch it but i agree no mention of tdee and no mention of counting calories.
