The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Summer - yes, sleep can be a bit disrupted after an FD, though IME you adjust to it.

Welcome back Dotty.

InfinitySeven · 06/01/2015 11:57

Morning everyone.

It's been a while since I checked in - went to DP's parents for Christmas, and they are very fussy about food. Huge insult if you don't eat it. Managed to skip breakfast every day, so hopefully that helped a little.

Fasted yesterday, and had chicken, rice & carrots for tea. Today I had cereal as a mid-morning lunch, and I'll have some type of casserole thing for tea if I can be bothered to cook.

Planning on starting up Jillian Michaels again, too, although perhaps every other day to start because my wrist is a bit of a problem.

Nice to see this thread is active again! Best of luck everyone.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 12:02

Welcome back, Dotty

Hi, Infinity Amazing that some people still pressure others into eating or drinking. Very unpleasant.

OP posts:
Dotty342kids · 06/01/2015 13:35

Ah, thanks bigchoc nice to see you too. How're you getting on these days?

Fcukfifa · 06/01/2015 14:32

Hi

Im starting the 5:2 today. Todays my first fast day and im not finding it too bad, had 3 cups of tea and a clementine so far. Also had a walk to the supermarket and back with the pushchair which is over a flyover. Phew!

Ive planned and just put into mfp to have salmon fillet, cauliflower rice, tenderstem brocolli, spinach and some new potatoes for tea and its coming in at 290 cals, seems far too low?? Im guessing the portion sizing's will be small.
Having a couple of new pots will be a bonus though seen as though I didnt think there would be any spare cals left for them.

Is anyone else on mfp here? Im just about to download the app again.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 15:49

Welcome Fcukfifa
Smile
Sounds delicious, but presumably small portions, except veg
I suggest you weigh the salmon & potatoes and compare each to the mpf weights.

I'm doing well, thanks Dotty
Maintaining since about last Easter and still training hard (except for Xmas break Kindled instead of exercise )

veryseriousgirl · 06/01/2015 16:37

Thanks everyone for the encouragement yesterday. I was nearly as annoyed to be upset as I was at the incident! Oh well, have moved on and left it behind me.

It's 16:36 of fast day and I've had two cups of coffee with milk, loads of water, and a couple of mugs of herbal tea. I can so totally do this.

Trying to decide if I eat my lovely veggie stir fry when the kids eat their tea or after they're in bed...

Fcukfifa · 06/01/2015 17:03

Thanks big choc :)

The salmon was only small anyway so I had a lot of the brocolli. Steamed the salmon in foil with the spinach, garlic, chipotle spice and line juice. Was delicious! The cauliflower rice was great too, really easy to make and will be using it a lot more when eating curries etc. I only had one new potato though, better safe than sorry Sad

Just worrying about when the kids go to bed, prime snacking time usually, so think I'll be having an early night too!

Very, we're fasting on the same day, how have you found it? Have you eaten your tea or decided to wait?

Fcukfifa · 06/01/2015 17:05

God knows how that unhappy face got in there!

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 06/01/2015 19:17

I did my first fast day on Monday and it went pretty well. I don't really like breakfast anyway so I had meals (soup) at lunch and tea. I had a few hungry moments but nothing as bad as I imagined.

The hardest part was cutting back on coffee as I wanted to avoid too many calories from milk. I had lots of weak lemon squash and peppermint tea.

This morning I didn't feel very hungry. I want to combine the 5:2 / 4:3 with 16:8 so did not have lunch till 1.00pm.

I Will have another fast day tomorrow and maybe Friday.

veryseriousgirl · 06/01/2015 19:21

Fcuk , I ate with the kids! Have closed the kitchen at 420 cals and feeling a teeny tiny bit smug.

I love cauliflower rice - I eat it sometimes when I'm not even fasting! I like the Save with Jamie veggie korma with cauliflower pilau for Friday nights when I really want a takeaway but don't want all the calories.

BigChocFrenzy · 06/01/2015 19:53

Fasting tip: After supper, clean your teeth immediately and rinse with mouthwash. This usually prevents nibble attacks later.

Well done on your 1st FD yesterday, twilight
Have you tried espresso, to cut out the milk ?
Some of us are evil and have artificial sweeteners and talkinpeace glares at us
Stevia is natural and goes well with herbal teas, but not coffee.

Fcukfifa · 06/01/2015 21:04

Very serious, that sounds amazing! I'm going to google it now Grin

Dh has just say and eaten some mini dime bars next to me, oh god my mouth was watering

OftheTwilighttheDarkness · 06/01/2015 21:15

Hi Bigchoc, thankfully I don't take sugar but I do like a milky coffee and skimmed milk just doesn't cut it for me in coffee. I am quite enjoying the peppermint tea which was a new experience, hopefully the reduced caffeine intake will help me sleep.

grannygrotts · 06/01/2015 22:03

Well, I am pleased to report that I have successfully completed my third FD; kitchen is officially closed.

Big thanks for all the support - had a major wobble at around 4.00 p.m. but had a quick read through the thread which really helped.

Found today much harder than the other two FDs but managed this evening to get in a 2 mile run/walk with lunges on the walk sections, so 100 in total. Good job it was dark as some of the lunges were a bit wobbly at first but improved as I warmed up.

Fcukfifa cauliflower rice sounds delicious. Must google it.

Next FD Friday.

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2015 07:30

Well done on your FD and the exercise, granny Also on staying strong through the wobble.
That FD may have been tougher because you are starting to burn body fat. In the first week or so in any diet, much of the weight loss is reversing water retention.
FDs will get easier again soon, when your body gets used to burning fat.

Dotty342kids · 07/01/2015 09:28

Morning all Smile

Good FD yesterday and today have started the day with a toasted teacake - yum! Meals all planned out for today using MFP so can eat what is planned, feeling confident that it'll all be within TDEE.

My tip for dealing with evening snacking habits is to go and have a long, lovely bubble bath. I often do this, with a good book, if I'm concerned that the temptation of the kitchen will sabotage a FD Grin

MazzleDazzle · 07/01/2015 13:04

Yikes! Did anyone else not manage to fast over the festives?

First FD since Xmas today. Checking in to announce that I will succeed. (determined emoji)

Will catch up on the thread later!

PrimalLass · 07/01/2015 13:51

Am struggling today. Maybe 4:3 in the first week back at it was a bad idea.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/01/2015 15:38

mazzle - I decided not to fast over the last two weeks. Didn't exercise either (other than a few walks). It felt quite good to get back into the usual regime on Monday!

grannygrotts · 07/01/2015 19:26

PrimalLass how you doing? Just got in from work or would have sent moral support vibes sooner. I struggled yesterday but managed to last the day by reading back on encouraging posts.

BigChoc - FDs will get easier again soon, when your body gets used to burning fat - I am sooooooooo looking forward to that!

fieldfare · 07/01/2015 20:23

Am joining in too. Yesterday was my first FD, today I'm just under my cal target and have been to the gym. Friday's going to be my next FD. I will do this!

BigChocFrenzy · 07/01/2015 20:32

Welcome, fieldfare That's a positive attitude.
Smile
Well done on your 1st FD and your exercise < I'm posting from the gym after 90 mins lifting and abs >

OP posts:
fieldfare · 07/01/2015 21:01

Thankyou. Well done on 90 mins! Wow. I managed 10 mins on the treadmill, a couple of circuits of weights and 5 miles on the bike. Dd came with me and she was starting to flake a bit then.

I've been heavier than this once before after having my daughter, but when I weighed myself after Christmas I was rather horrified! It's time to get rid of it.
