The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week.
Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Honey Good luck with the experiment, but you may need to try this 1-2 weeks to see results.
The usual reason for FD weight stall / gain is too much consumed on the previous NFD. However, a few folk, who eat well below TDEE on NFDs, have found their weight starts to drop once they eat more.

Possibly the previous weekly calorie deficit is too stressful for their body to cope with, so e.g. cortisol increases a lot.
The hormesis principal, on which IF is based, suggests a good FD / NFD contrast, so that the stress is intermittent, not continuous like daily CR.

HB Have you had a look at your entries on old threads (I think we both started around the number 8/9/10 mark maybe)? I just say that I seem to recall you finding your weight loss/gain on fasts days had much to do with your monthly cycle - could that be what's going on here? I may have entirely mis-remembered (likely!) but it might be worth doing a compare and contrast. We got all the old threads moved into this 'fasting/5:2' category so they should be on the last pages somewhere.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 22/11/2014 09:06

I finally managed a FD yesterday, with extreme difficulty. I was so hungry in the evening - think I should have had protein + veg rather than a small baked potato for dinner. I came in at roughly 670 calories, resisting the urge to eat up to 1000 cals. However, it was worth it - 1.75lbs lost! New weight 10 stone 6.25. Grin I don't know whether to fast on Sunday or not. I usually do Tues and Fri, but failed to fast on Tues or Wed or Thurs this week. If I do Sun and Tues then it will essentially be ADF for 6 days and i'm not very sure i'll manage that. Maybe if I do 1000 call fasts it'll be OK.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2014 10:06

Well done on the Fd and SV, Cheddar
You could either do 4:3 this week or make the 3rd one a 1000-cal mini-FD
If you are BFing, allow yourself 1000 for all FDs, at least for now. Otherwise, if you find 500-FDs too tough, it's absolutely fine to ease your way in to fasting, cutting down gradually from say 900.

I recommend cutting out FD starches & fruit, so you have protein and masses of veg to fill your tum - stews, curries, stirfries are great.
This will lower the GI load and also provide more nutrients, which may help satisfy your bod.

Hey everyone.

Another really tough week. Stuck to just having a low calorie tea On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Had toast and tea on Thursday, and yesterday I didn't eat fantastically. Bad lunch, but okay tea and I didn't snack much.

Wanted to get it back on track with an FD today but I'm starving. Torn between going to get breakfast or not. I guess I shouldn't but my God I'm hungry already.

InfinitySeven · 22/11/2014 12:15

Just realised that didn't make much sense. Tough in an emotional sense... Bereavement, break ups, homelessness, etc.

annielewis · 22/11/2014 12:50

Infinity are you ok? Bereavement breakups and homelessness..... holy crap!

Give your self a break - also do you mean you only had low calorie tea on Mon Tues Wed? In which case give yourself a break today - actually give yourself a break either way, thats a hell of a lot to be dealing with! ((Non MN hug for you))

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2014 14:33

((({Infinity }))) I'm so sorry you are suffering all this. You are very strong to keep to 5:2 umder the circs
I assume you had other meals Mon-Wed as well, since you didn't report falling over !
I hope your life gets a lot better very quickly.

InfinitySeven · 22/11/2014 14:46

Thanks Annie and BigChoc. I'm surviving.

Yep, had my usual FD low calorie teas on mon/tues/weds. I guess the stress was blocking me from feeling hungry.

I've had a slice of toast because I felt a bit dizzy. I think I'll be a little easier on myself today, and aim to properly get going every other day again tomorrow.

It's been reassuring, in a way, to have this already under control whilst everything else feels crazy.

TheHoneyBadger · 22/11/2014 15:40

yeah but do beware of that relishing control over food whilst all else spins infinity - that way danger lies! have a weekend off, focus on eating healthily and choosing nourishing food then do a fast on monday. it's not 5:2'ing you're doing there really but major calories restriction ongoingly.

get lots of nourishment and goodness into you today and tomorrow and be kind to yourself. i'm sorry you have so much going on x

Breadandwine · 22/11/2014 15:46

Bloody hell, Infinity!

Just wanted to offer a bit more support. To be IFing amongst all that lot shows a lot of commitment.

But you're right - it's not possible to control what life throws at us sometimes - but it is possible to have control over what we eat.

Hope that life gets better soon!

TalkinPeace · 22/11/2014 17:20

((( Infinity )))
TBH holding on to the 5:2 will probably help as its one little thing that you can control when all else is going pear shaped.

if stress makes it not feasible then EAT,
but make it things like eggs and cheese and fish that will make you fuller for longer, give you clarity of thought and mean that when life settles down you'll not have piled weight on.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/11/2014 20:15

Infinity With IF, one needs at least as many NFDs as FDs each week. Otherwise, it is too stressful for your body, like over-exercising.
Please take this weekend off, relax and eat healthily to TDEE. For next week, I suggest a maximum of 2 FDs.
Have plenty of Brew

InfinitySeven · 24/11/2014 14:12

I did take the weekend off.

FD today. Trying to do it right, because I'm looking porky. Still very stressed.

You're all right that I need to watch that I don't become too controlling over food during this period though, thank you. Usually I overeat if I'm emotional, so I'm trying to keep a middle balance.

I hope everyone else is managing okay, if you're on FDs too!

jellypi3 · 24/11/2014 14:22

Sounds like a rough time Infinity :( Hope it gets easier soon.

I'm on FD today but I am feeling really ill, AF showed up last night (10 days early) so feeling very bummed out about it all. All I want to eat is Pizza lol!

Still, coping ok!

fourwoodenchairs · 24/11/2014 17:26

Poor you Infinity, how are you feeling this evening?

Fast day for me, can't wait to eat tomorrow.

TalkinPeace · 24/11/2014 17:51

Has just reached the stage in my fast (24 hours since food) when my stomach is rumbling : time to see what is in the fridge methinks.

postmanpatscat · 24/11/2014 18:05

FD for me, so far I have had two cups of hot milk, lentil soup for lunch and a few cups of peppermint tea. Just over 100 cals left which will probably be more milk as I can't face anything else! Should probably give the milk a miss tbh as I've just been put on antibiotics for my lingering (5 weeks and counting) chest infection and ordered to attend hospital for a chest x ray.

I have a headache and I'm short of breath so easily and I'm now so used to feeling crap that I might as well fast too! Then at least I can make a dent in the 5lbs I want to shift before xmas.

Hope everyone else's FD is going well.

Infinity be kind to yourself.

Bimblepops · 24/11/2014 19:02

Infinity, I'm early sorry to hear you've been having such a tough time! It sounds incredibly hard! Please remember to be gentle with yourself. Hope your FD went well today.

PatsCat, hopefully the antibiotics will shift whatever nastiness has taken up residence in your lungs. It's such a pain having a lingering illness.

Mini-FD for me today, 700 cals, although I may have a slice of toast and houmous later, which will still bring me in below 1000 cals. I couldn't face birthday and Christmas shopping without a good meal to look forward to!

Hope everyone's FD's have gone well today.

CrockedPot · 24/11/2014 21:25

Hi, Can I join you? I have done 5:2 before but sadly slipped and kept on slipping and when I weighed myself in the gym today I was horrified to discover I have put on a whole stone. I have been in serious denial, I still fit into my clothes (though my jeans leave a print, and my bras give me double bob' effect but I kept telling myself it was just a few pounds blah blah blah.

So today I did my first FD. No breakfast, green salad for lunch, large bowl of veg soup for dinner, and lots of water throughout the day. Feel surprisingly good, just a bit annoyed with myself for letting things get this bad....

TalkinPeace · 24/11/2014 21:43

Hi Crocked
Welcome back.
Being boring it sounds like you need to MFP and have a look at whether you are keeping your intake at your TDEE on non fast days

CrockedPot · 24/11/2014 21:50

I am...I get a bit obsessed with MFP when I am on it, but I do find it helps. My intake for tomorrow is already planned!

BlairBass · 24/11/2014 22:21

Hi everyone, I'm jumping on the 5:2 train to slimdom - next stop pre-preg jeans! I've had a lovely time reading through your thread and getting all geed up with excitement for shifting the baby weight. Seems like it's working really well for so many of you, hurrah!
I had my first fast day today: coffee with almond milk, Covent garden pumpkin goulash soup, berries and Greek yog for dinner - & loads of water.
I feel surprisingly ok (but wondering if this is because I was still full from the mother of all sunday pig-outs yesterday!!?)
It sounds as though a lot of you have your FD on a Monday?
I'm thinking Monday and Friday this week.
BigChocFrenzy - thank you for all the amazingly detailed info you've compiled here, it's absolutely wonderful!

annielewis · 24/11/2014 23:39

Evening all, nice to see some more new/returning faces!

Infinity how are you doing? Thinking if you (and wondering if you are homeless right now?) hope you're alright.

Can I ask a really dumb question, what does AF stand for? Assuming its period, but don't get the abbreviation..

Didn't fast today as DH was going in to work late and had made me poached egg and asparagus brekkie, seemed churlish to refuse, but sadly that set me off of a frenzy of a day!! Actually probably not been too bad, haven't totted all up on MFP yet but prob around my tdee. Just missing my Monday 'break' after a weekend of NFDs.

So, am fasting tomorrow instead.

Postmanpats, get well soon!!
