Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Just popping in to say hi. Hope today is going well for all faster.

My little boy is poorly so not in nursery today. As a result I'm completely confused as to what day of the week I'm on. Thankfully only a 16hr fast for me today so just had to get to lunchtime with no food! Everything will be ok as long as I remember to pick DD up from nursery later Shock

DD graduated from her swim class this week so I took her for a nandos to celebrate. Tried their macho peas. Then recreated them at home. Why is it that I've been fasting now for 15 months and have only just discovered a way to eat a bowl of vegetables on their own???

ICanHearYou · 03/07/2014 14:11

I went to Nandos a few weeks ago, spent £30 on food for the family and was not impressed at all.

Will not be returning!

Today is a NFD for me so I've just enjoyed a rather large cup of coffee with milk and might help myself to a second one!

STBX Husband is coming over for dinner tonight with the kids so I get a bit of a break.

Planning on a fillet of smoked salmon with crunchy salad and croutons for tea. Looking forward to it!

Trenzalor · 03/07/2014 14:12

Hello all and happy birthday BigChoc Cake
Second ever FD and I am feeling this one. I had a theory that on day one my body was just working it's way through a backlog of food and I think I was correct! Yesterday I ate very well so no backlog! Today, getting to ten am was the worst and then I went out and so have been distracted. It's roasted veg and quinoa for dinner tonight. I think it helps I eat early - between 5 and 6 - with my eleven month old, so it's not too long to hold on. I can't believe I now get to eat normally for four whole days! Wayhay!
I hope everyone is good.

ChristinaYang · 03/07/2014 14:17

Happy birthday BigChoc Cake

Balooska - i'm pretty sure most of the protein from eggs are from their yokes? I love yokes, I couldn't throw it away and just eat the whites, you're very dedicated lol

nims1981 · 03/07/2014 14:37

happy birthday big choc, enjoy your treatsGrin.
I know I should stay off them bit I can't!
just done a 7 mile run, should I eat now ( not hungry) or wait till my early Fd tea at about 4-30?

MollyBdenum · 03/07/2014 14:40

I might try some home made Nandos for Sunday lunch one day. I have spice avoiding children who don't like peas, so I don't think it will be a regular thing.

I am annoyed as I am fasting today and have just noticed that two of the avocados I've been ripening in my fruit bowl since Monday have reached perfect ripeness. I don't think I have the calories to include them in tonight's dinner. I will just have to have lots tomorrow instead and hope that they don't go stringy.

SunshineofRay · 03/07/2014 14:43

Happy birthday bigchoc

livelablove · 03/07/2014 14:45

Happy Birthday bigchoc you don't look 58 in your photos, and I bet you are fitter than the average 58 year old. Enjoy your doughnuts!

eatriskier what are macho peas? How did you make them at home? I do like peas so might be a good FD recipe.

I am still fasting but had to eat an apple just now I felt really hungry and a bit weak. I'm just having a chicken breast with salad for dinner so hopefully that will be ok and I might have some more fruit this evening. I did measure out my milk for coffees this morning then forgot and used the normal milk oops, I am going to keep measuring it every day though so I will get used to it.

darlings · 03/07/2014 14:47

Big Choc happy birthday ????

darlings · 03/07/2014 14:50

Don't know why it didn't show my emoticons!

Well done nims 7mile is fab!

DramaAlpaca · 03/07/2014 14:51

Flowers Happy birthday BigChoc, enjoy your day and your Cake!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2014 15:07

Thanks for birthday wishes, everyone
Grin
Nims Molasses sound good natural food, miles better than sugar.

If you are genuinely not hungry, it sounds like your body has found enough food stores for post-run recovery. So, wait the 90 mins until tea.

I keep slices of ham or chicken in the fridge. They are very handy to munch on their own, to supply protein for a few cals without cooking hassle.

Ella A couple of small boiled eggs are only about 110 cals. Add say some tomatoes and lettuce to make a protein-rich FD breakfast after training.
Or scrambled eggs and spinach.
That still leaves calories for a good supper.

Happy Birthday BigChoc!

I'm doing a couple of days of mini fasts as I'm still so tired. Why oh why does dd not sleep? Grrrrr.

Bimblepops · 03/07/2014 16:32

Happy birthday, BigChoc! Cake & Flowers for you.

FD today and I am struggling. Have been out in the sun for 5hrs, drunk loads of water (approx 2.5l) and had a variety of salads for lunch (235 cals). But now I am WIPED OUT! Thinking lustfully about an ice-cold can of coke and also really really fancying a BBQ for dinner.

Trying to counterbalance how I'm feeling and my cravings, with reminding myself how I want to feel tomorrow morning, knowing I've done another week of 5:2...but it's not doing the trick at the moment. Trying to satiate myself with some cold water with like, but I'm not optimistic!

Bimblepops · 03/07/2014 16:33

With LIME, not like

Baloostika · 03/07/2014 16:41

Christina I lol too, I actually wish I could eat the yolk too but it's too calorific for a FD. 85 against 350 5 whole eggs u can just imagine I'll be left with no dinner. I do eat the yolks on NFD by the way.
FD is going very well and I hope and pray it ends well, enjoying a big mug of hot lemon water right now, it's raining Brew will be in order. Grin

BCF how's the birthday going? I think Cake and Wine in moderation is ok for a day like this Smile.

livelablove · 03/07/2014 17:19

Struggling a bit today too. I feel a bit tired and weak, but not sure if it is lack of food as I just ate my dinner and struggled to eat it all, and still feeling bleurgh, so maybe it is not related to the fast.
Keep going though everyone, only a few more hours and tomorrow we can eat normally!
My biggest Tada was when I refused one of DH box of nice chocs.

MollyBdenum · 03/07/2014 17:21

Nimble, do you have any bitters in your house? Fizzy water with bitters is delicious and pretty much calorie free and feels like a proper grown up treat. I go on about it all the time because it is so good. I have a glass at the moment.

MollyBdenum · 03/07/2014 17:21

It also looks very pretty.

Trenzalor · 03/07/2014 17:38

My stomach has shrunk. I just can't finish my usual sized (but FD calories) dinner.

thinkcan · 03/07/2014 18:01

Happy Birthday BigChoc. Know that your dedication and unending advice and encouragement here is much appreciated. It does not matter what your age is. With your attitude, you will always be young.

Bimblepops · 03/07/2014 19:00

Thanks, MollyB, I'll go and have a rummage around in the garage (where we keep spirits etc). However, I've already semi-lapsed - had a piece of toast and marmite and a mini-can of coke. Still within my 500cal for the day at 395cals, but I can't see it working!

DH has popped to the pub for 'a quick pint', so no BBQ for me (boooooo!) and I'll be at a loose end once the kids are in bed. I have to confess I'm thinking that would be a great time to retire to the garden with a glass of prosecco in the garden, some olives and a book!

vvviola · 03/07/2014 20:02

I've been putting off this week's second FD because of miserable weather and feeling shattered because of DD2's lack of sleep (silly parents, it only dawned on us yesterday that the disturbed sleep was exactly like when she had undiagnosed allergies, so a few doses of meds and her inhaler made for a better night... no idea what caused it though Sad)

So, FD today. Have a chicken soup waiting in the office in case I can't get through the day. Dinner already cooked for everyone (spag bol for them, bolognese on some steamed veg for me), so hopefully things will go better.

Mind you, DD1 is driving me crazy already this morning and that's usually a trigger for me to dig into the toast in the morning!

ditsygal · 03/07/2014 21:22

signing off with a succesful FD here. pretty much bang on 500 cals. Looking forward to the weekend and 3 NFD's now before my next monday FD.
I've lost 12lbs since the 21st may when I started - so 6 weeks, really really chuffed with that! and now back at a weight I used to sit comfortably at so fitting into lots of clothes from pre DS! but I am still finding lots are a bit tighter then they were last time I was this weight so obviously my body is a different shape since having my DS - wider hips for a start and a bit larger around the ribcage- to be expected I guess but still annoying!

Bimblepops · 03/07/2014 21:27

I talk such complete arse sometimes.

Instead of prosecco, olives and my book, I have done Shred L2,D7 and am having a little bottle of beer for dinner to bring me up to a 560cal total for today's successful-after-all-my-talk FD. Not the healthiest calorific intake this afternoon, but as a one-off, I don't care!

Hope everyone else was less wobbly and fickle than I was today!
