Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 46: Wild about Satan's Whizz (Diet Coke) ? Lazy Low Carbers, Pissed-off Piscatorians, Voracious Vegans, Ferocious Flexitarians,....... IF/5:2 can help you lose weight healthily.

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Yay! Successful fast yesterday! Very pleased.

Another one tomorrow but for today I can eat normally :)

Ellabella3 · 03/07/2014 08:45

Thanks BigChoc, I'll try the shakes and post run breakfast and see how I go. Once I start eating I tend to get hungry through the day but maybe a high protein breakfast will keep me going until dinner on a fast day. Definitely worth a try Smile

livelablove · 03/07/2014 09:06

Hi Rally sorry to hear you have been so sick. I know the advice is not to fast when sick as you need to get all your nutrients to recover. Maybe eat to TDEE and focus on really eating healthily to help you get better. Things like plenty of veg and some fruit and maybe some broth made from bones which is supposed to be very good (Jewish penicillin) my mum says thyme is good for infections and also manuka honey. I guess you might need soft foods too so things like soups and smoothies might be a good choice.

nims1981 · 03/07/2014 09:43

Thank you thinking, glad to hear it's not all in my head, the doctor yesterday didn't seem to think it very likely!
lab my boys do seem to like it and hopefully it's better than refined sugar but need to look into that. I've got grape molasses. which tastes a bit like prune juice so quite sweet!
I'm fasting today and starving already! weighed in and I'm up 3lbSad
still I'm sure some if it's undigested food as I've had plentyBlush

livelablove · 03/07/2014 09:53

I am fasting too. It was hard at breakfast time as I always enjoy my breakfast once dd has gone to school and I get a bit of time to relax before work. But got through with a coffee and read the paper.
Blackstrap molasses was what we had, I think it has a lot of nutrients in it.

meadowquark · 03/07/2014 10:08

Good morning fellow fasters. I am glad to see some new names and absolutely love to read about your food choices for FD.

I am having a FD after yesterday's mini FD (how brave of me! :) ). Cottage cheese and chocolate for lunch and slim noodles and chorizo for dinner, and a bag of salad for niblling.

I have not measured myself for ages and still don't get how inches could drop but not lbs if you don't do sports. The best measurer is my clothes. My size 18 pencil skirt is becoming seriously loose. Yey to that!

nims I am sure your mini FDs will sort your binges out!

ChristinaYang · 03/07/2014 10:20

Hi everyone!

Successful FD for me yesterday Smile, so with Mon & Wed done I am now good to eat the rest of the week, I still plan to eat sensibly and then maybe not so sensibly one day at the weekend.

This morning I had porridge with some cinnamon, banana and a splash of honey - was delicious.

I'm really surprised at how I'm not bothered with eating very much on NFD, before 5:2 i'd be snacking all day but I seem to be making healthier choices!

Ella I wouldn't take nutritional advice from people who do herbalife or try to push the 6 small meals a day jargon Hmm. Well done on your weightloss and good for you on the exercising!

MollyBdenum · 03/07/2014 10:32

NSV for me. I just went to the loo and realised after pulling down my jeans that they were still fastened. They are very stretchy, but it's still a victory.

I have been trying to incorporate a bit more hiit cardio into my exercise routine do I bought a skipping rope, but that is possibly too much of a challenge for my pelvic floor, so I am thinking of heading to the park next week and giving suicide sprints a go.

I am also thinking about joining the university fencing club and doing their beginners course, even though it will be full of 18 year olds.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2014 10:37

nims If you have a tendency to binge, then nuts, seeds and figs are very moreish calorie bombs.

I recommend cutting up vegetables like carrots, broccoli, cucumber and having them preferably without dips
Also fruit like apples, tangerines which take some chewing or preparation. Restrict bananas to maximum 1 per day, because each is a sugary 100 cals

Rally: While you are taking antibiotics do NOT fast
Your body needs extra nutrients and also fasting itself can interfere with some meds.
Your aim should be healthy maintenance. So:
. Eat within TDEE every day
. No alcohol or sweet junk. Try to cut out fizz if possible
. Have plenty of protein, lean veg, some fruit (not dried)
. Try to eat complex carbs instead of white, e.g. quinoa, brown rice, cous-cous, sweet potato, wholegrain bread

I hope the antibiotics do the trick so you get better very soon.

Rally I second BCF - get better then get back to 5:2 - you won't undo all your hard work so far and we'll all be here to support you starting up again :)

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2014 11:10

Oops, I just spotted "lean veg" in my last post. That's really healthy ones !
Grin
Well, I'm a bit distracted today: it's my birthday.
Cripes, I don't feel 58 years old !

I brought salt brezels and assorted mini-donuts into work.
Healthy eating flies out the window on my birthday.
However, pre-5:2, I would have scarfed down 8 big choc donuts, plus assorted cheesecakes and choc muffins. I'm just having a few minis today.

I'll do my usual 2hrs intense Thursday training: outdoor xfit circuits and spin.
I enjoy that, but I might have an ice cream at the cafe afterwards, to complete the gastronomic orgy

Thanks livelablov, bcf and Betsy - I think I probably knew that, but needed to hear it from people more knowledgeable than me!

I'm scared I may have gone off the boil with 5:2 and am in danger of slipping back into old habits, but I guess part of that is the fact I'm not well and in a ton of pain. Hopefully the abs will knock it on the head and I can knuckle down again soon.

Thanks for all your excellent advice and well done to all the newcomers who are doing so well.

rallytog1 · 03/07/2014 11:13

Grin at lean veg! I'm sure I could make veg fatty though...

Dotty342kids · 03/07/2014 11:19

Oh I am really craving cake today (it's a FD). HELP Grin

BetsyBell · 03/07/2014 11:41

Happy Birthday BigChoc Grin

BetsyBell · 03/07/2014 11:45

I'm meant to be fasting but have just eaten a distinctly unFD brunch (2 x thin wholemeal toast with almond butter and banana).

So, NO SNACKING and a very tiny dinner for me then!

I don't always do second fast anymore as I've been training pretty hard and not eating enough to maintain over the week. However, I'm on a training ban this week due to a slight injury I'm trying to fix up, which means my calorie allowance plummets so 2 FDs I really need.

Dotty342kids · 03/07/2014 12:12

Have a very happy birthday Bigchoc and enjoy your treats before / after that workout. Very impressed - you wouldn't catch me exercising on my birthday Grin

rallytog1 · 03/07/2014 12:33

Oops, I missed that - happy birthday Bigchoc!

Ellabella3 · 03/07/2014 12:54

Happy birthday bigchoc Flowers
Thank you christina, they are a really nice bunch but have all been brainwashed by the herbal life sales team Wink.
Good luck to all fasters today.

ThinkingJanuary · 03/07/2014 13:00

My FD isn't going too well.

Had nothing for breakfast and my lovely lovely boss bought me a bean wrap from M&S - I couldn't say no so I ate it. So including tea I've had 478 cals so far. I'm likely to go over my 500 but am aiming at making it a mini fast day instead rather than a total flop - will have poached salmon and roasted veg for dinner and be done with it.

We have a weekend away to Cheshire visiting family - so will track using mfp and have a proper fast on Monday.

Baloostika · 03/07/2014 13:02

HBD BCF may your days be long and healthy Grin. Have a great day.
Welldone to all new faster u all are doing so well and I'm proud of u all. This WOE is doable and together we will get to our goals.
It's a FD for me and I've had a coffee, scrambled egg whites, 5 eggs cos I saw how low car they were Smile and a half tin of baked beans. That's a lot of protein in one meal if u ask me, dinner will be chicken pepper soup or yoghurt and millet cereal. Meanwhile more water and Brew.
I'm going to the gym later this evening for an hour that will make my dinner worth it I guess.
CLENCH everyone, lol.

MollyBdenum · 03/07/2014 13:06

Happy birthday BigChoc.

I'm fasting today and its gone fine so far. Green tea for breakfast and I will be having some bouillon when I get back from the swimming pool (with the 4 year old) and sausages with either roast or stir fried broccoli and cabbage for dinner. I will leave enough veg to eat for breakfast tomorrow with a couple of poached or scrambled eggs and some hot sauce.

meadowquark · 03/07/2014 13:08

Happy birthday BigChoc Thanks Cake Wine

PhoneSexWithMalcolmTucker · 03/07/2014 13:17

Happy birthday BigChoc!

Second FD of the week for me. I totally busted my calorie allowance yesterday with homemade pizza and two cans of beer for tea. It just goes to show how easy it is to overeat - I would have been fine if I'd had salad for lunch instead of chili con carne, rice and cheese Grin

Someone else told me I'd lost weight this morning, although it might just be due to a more flattering outfit.
