Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Oh yes, meadowquark Japanese green tea can be quite bitter, that's true. I do drink my "regular" tea black though, so I'm probably quite used to the bitterness.

I actually found that the green tea I was offered in China a phase of doing lots of business travel but never seeing the outside of the meeting rooms! was almost too weak for me after getting used to the Japanese type.

You've got me all nostalgic now, I may have to go rummage in the cupboard. Grin

SquirrelledAway · 05/06/2014 10:31

I find cleaning my teeth is a good way of avoiding snacking. Especially if you use super minty toothpaste.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2014 10:33

I enjoy mugs of Rooibos tea, also super-healthy. I have orange and ginger flavour.
Stevia is good with herbal teas (but I can't stand its liquorice flavour in espresso or black tea)

hungrymonster247 · 05/06/2014 10:36

Ohhhhh a rinse of purple listerine is also good..

Blitzes your mouth you don't want to ruin it!!!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2014 10:38

FD tip:
Before you start, measure out and pour milk for hot drinks for the whole day into a little jug.
Similarly, measure and weigh the day's sugar in a little tub.
Calorie count both.

meadowquark · 05/06/2014 10:47

Oh god, something tells me that this FD is going to be difficult. It is like all my mental strength and motivation has gone. I brushed my teeth, had a mug of green tea and black coffee, but something's bugging me inside my head and saying "you won't last". I have to. I must. I will.

Bollard · 05/06/2014 11:14

Meadowquark you can do it! A big chunk of the day has gone already! Drink some water!
Having said that, I've just had a (small) packet of foam bananas Grin and have the urge to spend the day eating.

Eatriskier · 05/06/2014 11:15

chopsy I'm a recent convert to flavoured green teas - Twinings do some lovely ones and some special ones like salted caramel and gingerbread. The gingerbread is to die for (and the salted caramel isn't far behind it)

ErrolTheDragon · 05/06/2014 11:18

Meadow - sure you can last. Ignore those bugging feelings and they'll probably subside.

FD for me too. I'm using a fairly large jug for my milk allowance - 400mls! Find that suits me better than black coffee (which I suspect was exacerbating my rosacea)

SunshineofRay · 05/06/2014 11:32

meadow you can do it!
It's my FD today and I'm struggling a little, feel a bit weak and and felt a bit dizzy during my workout. I ate well yesterday and only a few cals over my TDEE
Think I'm going to break fast at 12 and have some boiled eggs and then save the rest of my cals for dinner tonight

BetsyBell · 05/06/2014 11:36

Cooking quinoa - having had a disaster earlier this week I thought I'd post up instructions that works well:

Rinse thoroughly in water. Put quinoa (I never measure but this packet says allow 60-80g per person) in a heavy based pan with close fitting lid I used a small Le Creuset casserole. Add twice the volume of water - I do this by eye. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer for about 8 minutes. Leave lid on and turn off the heat (can leave pan in place if on ceramic/electric hob - residual heat is fine, possibly good). Leave for about 15-20 mins until all the water has been absorbed. The white germe will have separated from the seed.

It can be eaten warm in place of rice or can be stored in the fridge and used as a salady dish - mixed with roast veggies and a blob of humus, or added to stir fries for the last minute of cooking. It keeps fine for a few days in the fridge.

I'll have to have a look next time I go to tesco. I'm a dedicated aldi shopper which means my choices are limited. I've got green tea with lemon, but it smells like my floor cleaner which puts me off a bit!
I like the sound of the one with mango and lychee, it's the sweetness I miss really. I've mentioned before but I am a sugar monster, and have a dreadful sweet tooth.
If I ever binge, it's always sweet

TobyLerone · 05/06/2014 11:59

meadow, I had a really hard FD yesterday. You can do it!

MelanieCheeks · 05/06/2014 12:14

You can do it meadow!

I have a sachet of miso soup for lunch. But the sun is shining, I think I might walk to Tesco and get one of their undressed side salads, which is around 30 cals for the whole tub.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/06/2014 12:23

Clipper do a green tea with lemon, which I liked for a while but then went off. May give it another go - I'm due another drink about now. Not quite ready for my miso yet.

If you like it, liquorice tea is naturally sweet - its the only herbal I like without a sweetener in it. I find that a lot of the others smell sweet but then the taste doesn't match otherwise.

MelanieCheeks · 05/06/2014 13:36

Nomnomnom. Solero Mojito flavour (with rum!) 55 cals. The assistant had to check I was over 18....

mummyof2girlsx · 05/06/2014 14:07

Twinings Green Tea with Pomegranate is also quite nice, not bitter like some others Smile

JessieEssex · 05/06/2014 14:41

Hi all, I'm new to all this and thought I'd just dive in! I've got some weight to lose but more importantly I want to reset my relationship with food - to learn to love quality over quantity and to stop using food as an emotional crutch.
I run three times a week and this has really improved my fitness and health but I tend to reward myself with food and undo any potential weight loss benefits.
I'm going to start 5:2 next week and spend this weekend reading up on it, but from speaking to friends and family who are doing it, it seems a great thing to try.
I want to lose about 10-12 pounds and then maintain that loss rather than yo yo-ing all over the place! Here goes...

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 05/06/2014 15:26

I'm a fan of liquorice tea too, naturally sweet, good for FD 'dessert'. Really like Twinnings Sensations buttermint or dragin fruit/raspberry. Really not a fan of green tea tea bags, can't beat Chinese green tea leaves, but i appreciate that might just be me...

Reporting a successful FD, 490 cals and just snuggling down here. After my break i was pleasantly surprised i could deal with the hunger. I felt quite empowered by it Grin Good luck fellow FDers, hope you have nice dinners planned!

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2014 15:41

Welcome, Jessie Have you added some resistance training as well ?
Lots of training support and ideas on 52ExerciseThread2

Well done, DontBeBlue You haven't lost your touch

Keep strong Meadow This is worth doing.

MollyBdenum · 05/06/2014 15:57

Thanks for the exercise link, bigchoc. I'll take a look and see if anyone else is doing similar stuff to me, and get some encouragement that with perseverance my incredibly weedy triceps will get strong.

aquavit · 05/06/2014 16:16

Humph. NFD for me and was feeling great - met up with lovely friend for lunch at Jamie's Italian, had naughty glass of prosecco, all going beautifully, then I ordered (large) bresaola salad, and the tiniest little thing turned up. Now I'm just plain HUNGRY and feeling like I do on a fast day. 'twas not cheap either

Should I now wait till supper? Are there any healthy snacks? CBA to roast chickpeas ... (Tho I did try this the other day and will admit it was delicious)

aquavit · 05/06/2014 16:20

Molly they definitely can and will! If you are going to a gym can you get one of the trainers to show you a few specific exercises? I find it really helpful to have someone check my form every so often. Also it was a trainer who first out me onto HIIT which changed everything for me (long before I started to think about diet as well) Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2014 17:07

Molly, anyone else wanting exercise advice Post a bit about your aims, current training and fitness levels on the exercise thread, I can suggest a plan and some routines, for either home or gym.
Also, some tips about finding suitable gym and trainer, if you like.

somewherebecomingrain · 05/06/2014 17:56

I was 3lb down this am after just 2 fasts. Planning to fast tomorrow.

Currently eating 2 huge meals a day of 1200 cals each but not much else.
