Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 45: Getting keen on quinoa, learning to love the lettuce and varying the veg - help and advice on improving our health and eating habits with 5:2 fasting.

The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together the original OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

cold turkey
pints of water
and a sign on the door (a real one) that says CLOSED as you leave after doing the supper washing up

Bollard · 04/06/2014 21:23

Dontbeblue I'm very sorry about your m/c.

TalkinPeace · 04/06/2014 21:41

Dontbeblue
Throw yourself back into the fasting, get fit, get your body in tip top shape - and enjoy the odd glass of fizzy before you get pregnant again Smile

Chopsypie · 04/06/2014 21:44

Don'tbeblue so sorry to hear about your mc. If you need to chat/vent feel free to PM me.

I'm all prepared for my second fast day tomorrow. Got spicy cauliflower rice with veggies for lunch and steamed cod, with tomato and basil sauce with veg and couscous for dinner.
I recalculated my TDEE and now have a target of 1800 each day. I'm 400 under for today but have eaten 3 meals, pudding after dinner and an evening snack of Jaffa cakes!
I have made more of an effort to stay away from the things I know are quite calorific (who knew there was so many calories in tortilla wraps!) and I'm eating much more fruit and veg.

TobyLerone · 04/06/2014 22:19

dontbeblue Flowers

I am STARVING this evening. I had to have a small handful of blueberries after I put the baby to bed because it was the only thing which stopped me from making a couple of rounds of toast.
I think I'm finishing my FD on about 600, which is better than I thought it would be. This one was Hard.

vvviola · 04/06/2014 22:36

Dontbeblue I'm very sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself.

dinkystinky · 04/06/2014 22:44

FD shelved today mid pm as aunt flo and her munchie minions arrived a week early - has been rescheduled for tomorrow

vvviola · 04/06/2014 22:52

Small SV again this morning, which is positively miraculous considering the weekend I had, and that I've only done one FD this week. Down almost half a kg. So almost 2.5kg since the start.

Have decided against measuring until I'm below the 80kg mark (another 1.5kg to go) or if I plateau for a bit. Mainly because I'd like to see an obvious difference Grin

Didn't feel hungry at all this morning but ended up having some porridge because after I made it, DD1 decided she didn't want hers. Now feel completely stuffed.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2014 22:56

brockhurst / sunshine Folk lose at different rates, depending on their individual bodies, ages and especially if they have dieted before.

Fasting is healthy if we follow the principles of hormesis which for 5:2/IF means having very contrasting fast days and recovery periods, in which the body goes into repair and clearup mode.

Don't try to force your body to lose more quickly than it wants by going too low on NFDs.
That is unsustainable and can lead to bingeing & weight regain.
Also, it may cause lowered metabolism and damaged adrenals / endocrine system, which may cause you to hang onto fat or disrupt menstruation.

If you REALLY want to kickstart weight loss for the first weeks:
. Keep to range 500 - max 550 on the 2 NFDs
. and make those FDs low carb, with NO sugar, fruit, yoghurt or starches
. Calculate TDEE of your goal weight
. Have ONE 1400 NFD and make it low carb too. The other NFDs should be moderate carb.
. 2 x goal TDEE-10%
. 1 x goal TDEE
. Replace the unrestricted day by current TDEE+10%
. Cut out alcohol, crisps, chox, bix, cake and other sweet baked goods
. On NFDs, concentrate on healthy protein, fats, lots of veg, max 1 portion fruit.
. Replace white bread or pasta with wholegrain, white rice with brown or quinoa, cereal with oat bran etc and have smaller carb portions.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2014 23:01

500 - max 550 on FDs (but you realised that)

BigChocFrenzy · 04/06/2014 23:05

Well done on your SV, vvv that's good progress.

Toby If you are still BFing, remember you can have extra cals, up to 1000 FDs if you want.
Nuts, say 10 UNsalted almonds, keep you fuller longer than fruit and are not many calories

TobyLerone · 04/06/2014 23:13

I am EBF, but I think I'll prefer to stick to 500-ish FDs where possible, because if I don't see quick, reliable results I know I'll get bored and give up and forever carry this 2 extra stone.

DD is the 4 Month Sleep Regression poster child atm, gone from waking once (occasionally twice) in the night for a feed to waking hourly from midnight until 7am when we're up for the day. The tiredness is what is making FDs a struggle, I think.

But I will try not to beat myself up too much if I go a little over on FDs. Thanks, BCF :)

Bollard · 05/06/2014 06:49

2 fast days done this week, and another 2lbs down! I'm beginning to get my head round NFDs being a different sort of discipline.

Bimblepops · 05/06/2014 07:32

Checking in for 2nd fast day of the week.
Good luck to all other FD'ers today.

Chopsypie · 05/06/2014 07:51

Good luck to everyone fasting today. I'm starting with green tea. I'm still not even sure I like it, but I'm drinking it!

MelanieCheeks · 05/06/2014 08:08

2nd FD here. Having a mug of flavoured coffee - I only ever drink it on FDs. Half a tin of salmon awaits for dinner, the joys!

SunshineofRay · 05/06/2014 08:25

2nd ever FD for me today, weighed myself this morning and I've already lost 4lb from tuesday! I was at the tail end of my period and I hadn't been drinking water much so it could've been water retention
But I am happy and it has spurred me on a little

chopsy I drink green tea with Lemon by twining a it's much nicer than plain green tea
bigchoc thank you for the advice, I am going to try the plan for 2 weeks and see how I go

vvviola · 05/06/2014 08:30

chopsy I think green tea is a bit of an acquired taste. It certainly took me a while to get used to it - when I lived in Japan it was served every morning at work so I got used to it eventually. that was also when I was at my thinnest ever, despite drinking an obscene amount of alcohol at the weekends, I often wonder if the large amounts of green tea and the low dairy/meat and high fish/vegetable Japanese diet had something to do with it

I'm off to my tap class at the end of a fairly good NFD (low on carbs, lots of vegetables but 3 good healthy meals).

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 05/06/2014 08:35

Morning all other FDers bimble sunshine chops melanie

My first FD after a 7 week break and i feel lighter already. It's 15:30 here, so far mug of soy milk, homemade veg soup, watermelon and a lovely cup of English tea Brew ahhhhhh

Does everyone else get this excited about NFDs on FDs? So far I've planned all 3 of tomorrow's meals plus Cake he he, at least i know from last time that FD cravings don't always materialise!

Good luck all x

DontBeBlueBeARainbow · 05/06/2014 08:38

Oh, also, has there been any sign of Zedzed recently? Haven't caught up with 43 or 44 since I've been away, but i was eagerly watching Zed's progress from January...

meadowquark · 05/06/2014 09:23

Morning all! My 7th FD here. I am having cottage cheese with 1/2 tbs of orange marmelade for breakfast, asparagus and boiled egg for lunch and butternut squash soup for dinner.

My NFD yesterday was typical... nice day until 30 minutes before going to sleep. I thought I spoled it completely but counted calories this morning and it was only 108% of my TDEE, so not that bad.

vvviola don't you find that japanese green tea is much bitterer than the one sold in other parts of the world? I say I love green tea but actually can hardly have the Japanese one!

Good luck all fasters!

brockhurst44 · 05/06/2014 09:28

Thanks for all the advice! this forum is really great!
I am going to finish this week as i have been, as its a FD today and weigh in tomorrow morning and don't want to upset the apple cart.
Then I am going to adopt BigChoc's advice --> have noted it down in the back of my book!! to be honest i am going to be loving that as its a few more calories than I have been eating so NFD's will feel like feast days! I have been looking at the forum for a while and have picked up a few tips and as the summer is (almost!?) here I find it easier to ditch the carbs and stick with salads etc... next week I am going to experiment with Quinoa, my childminder uses it loads and so I am going to adopt it.
NSV today as a dress which fitted at my slimest post children i am wearing today and its quite roomy...also cliped my bra to the next link in!!!

thank you all and i will def be posting here in the future....

hungrymonster247 · 05/06/2014 09:59

Morning morning,

NFD here. Successful FD yesterday. And I clocked up 10K steps, only worn a pedometer for a couple of days but a harsh reality of a desk job and how sedentary I have got!

Even boosting my steps with a few minutes marching on the spot next to the kettle!

I haven't weighed myself this morning, I am taking a week off and follwoing bigchoc tips and see what next week brings.

Good luck Thursday fasters!!

hungrymonster247 · 05/06/2014 10:00

Ohhh I love twinnings green tea with mango and lychee, lovely and sweet and refreshing!!

MollyBdenum · 05/06/2014 10:09

I had a bit of an evening snacking incident may night and went well over my TDEE. So, that's a valuable lesson learned. I think I will make a proper closed sign for the kitchen to use from now on and try to only have pepper meals sitting at the table for me and the children. DP is a sensible snacker unless he's been to the pub.
