The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Eatriskier ... it is extraordinarily annoying when your best beloved can't do something bloody simple.... but in this case there may be a solution. Get yourself your own alarm clock and keep it your side of the bed! My DH is a snorer so we have separate bedrooms, and each have our own alarm clock. DD has her own too now. I've actually got two alarm clocks... one set to the schoolday non-negotiable 6:35, the other which I use when I want a different time for some reason. Cheap, easy to set one from Argos.

SpottyTeacakes · 12/05/2014 09:06

NFD today. Good job too as I'm super stressed already! Pesky children and southern electric Angry

Anonynony · 12/05/2014 09:10

Morning all! I have been very quiet but still plodding along.
8lbs gone so far so I'm thrilled with that!

Wasn't sure weather to have a fast day today but had two big bowls of crunchy nut clusters and whole milk, totalling just over 500cals! Dunno what I was thinking as I'm not even a cereal person. Hoping I can try have nothing for the rest of the day but not so sure!

Eatriskier · 12/05/2014 09:11

I do actually have an alarm clock on my side of the bed, however the alarm has been switched off on it at his request. Which makes me even more angry! Well its getting bloody switched on now. And I may accidentally leave it on at the weekend and ruin his lie ins. Angry

I don't think I'd have minded so much had he not pottered around the house for 45mins that I could have used and then, despite being really good and hands on with the kids, asked if I could just fit it in when DS naps. It does give me the opportunity at least to use this Bike and tell him to get on his!!!!

Eatriskier · 12/05/2014 09:12

anony I randomly have moments like that too, still can't explain why they happen but they're usually fairly short lived!

ChocolateTwist · 12/05/2014 09:28

Good morning and happy Monday everyone, good luck to everyone fasting.
I just wanted to say I'm having success in keeping to TDEE, incorporating so HIIT and mainly sticking to 16:8 so I'm going to keep this up until this particularly stressful part of my life is over. I'm still reading and cheering all the SVs and NSVs and taking in the great advice.

ChocolateTwist · 12/05/2014 09:31

And eatriskier why not get your own, even louder alarm clock and set it five minutes earlier than he does? If you get a battery operated one you can even hide it under the bed or something :) just to make the point.

almostthereagain · 12/05/2014 09:53

Soothing hair strokes to eat Has def got to the point to take it into your own hands!
korma welcome & good luck. I find low carbing helps with my tummy 'issues' & feel sooo much better & that it's easier to avoid them if I don't eat them iykwim. Leaves more cals for nutritious stuff too. However I always slide in the hols, feel rubbish then crave them againConfused note to self DON'T DO IT!! You fasting today?
Choc sorry to hear you're having a stressful time, good to see you're still managing to stay firmly on the wagon thoughSmile
Did SATS b'fast club this am & a piece of leftover bacon fell in my mouthHmm Supposed to be fasting too.

tiggermummy70 · 12/05/2014 09:59

Hi everyone.

I am back with bit more focus I hope. Got disheartened at getting to a month and finding wl =0.6lb not allowing for me gaining and loosing 3lbs over holiday.
However I did spend the weekend in skinny size 14 jeans and got lots and lots of good comments. So although I don't feel that different I must be cos two folks didn't recognise me at first glance.
FD today.....

Eatriskier · 12/05/2014 10:20

After talking to a mate in RL I've remembered why he asked me to switch my clock off. Its a loud beeping one and he's prefer the radio which wakes you a bit more gently. Well tomorrow it may just beep loudly under his side of the bed at stupid o'clock. Yes this will also punish me but sod him. I may have an early night in preparation for it too

Eatriskier · 12/05/2014 10:22

On a nicer note I tried out some coconut water earlier. That was really nice. I've definitely gone coco-nutty or just nutty Wink. I've now got coconut and lime cordials, malibu and now coconut water on the go, as well as coconut fragrance body lotions and perfumes. At least its always summery around me.

msmoss · 12/05/2014 10:46

Hi Everyone, hope you're all keeping well, just quickly signing in to say hi, second FD here, have been for a 3.5 mile run and eaten nothing, so feeling reasonably happy with myself, although it is the second day of my period so I am a bit concerned about the impact that will have on things.

Currently feeling great, and had best run in ages so am going to try not to be pessimistic.

Anyway I have tons of work to do so will be back later in the day when I take a break start procrastinating

msmoss · 12/05/2014 10:49

PS thanks to those who answered my question about shoe size on the last thread, I had thought that shoe size never changed despite your weight but on reflection I think I just picked that up from a trashy novel where the main character was quite overweight but shoe obsessed!

rallytog1 · 12/05/2014 11:22

Morning all. Am on week 3 now and FDs are definitely getting easier. We've bought the recipe book and I am planning the prawn & asparagus stir fry and black bean chilli for this week's FDs. Will report back on them but there are some good-looking recipes in there for anyone who's struggling for FD meal inspiration.

I haven't weighed myself yet, as I'm a little ashamed of my current weight, but a friend did ask me if I'd lost weight yesterday, so I'm taking that as a sign that things are heading in the right direction!

ChocolateTwist · 12/05/2014 11:55

To everyone who is ashamed of their weight:
Please feel free to argue and call me a hypocrite, because I haven't been clinically obese at any point in my life, but please think about this: we live in an environment in which, for different reasons, food is constantly being sold to is or pushed on us, whether by companies for profit or families for love or friends and acquaintances either as part of a good time or because we get the message that eating things is an indulgent and nobody wants to be seen to do it alone or enjoy it alone. At the same time most people work in a sedentary and not very stimulating environment, or have and care for young children, both of which are pretty conducive to snacking. We are all genetically unique, and process food and exercise in different ways, and have our own stresses and problems. Our brains respond to the taste of food and the feeling of hunger differently. What basis is there for making people ashamed because of their weight in these circumstances? We would never say an overweight animal should be ashamed of it, we would just alter their access to food or type of food or exercise to improve their health. It isn't a moral issue. Just because we can forcibly restrict our food doesn't mean that we should feel guilt for not doing it; who gets hurt apart from us if we eat a few biscuits? Techniques like fasting are neutral techniques to improve health and control weight and again it isn't anyone's fault if they have a lot of weight to lose or are losing it slowly. People are here to lessen the impact of food on their lives, and weight is just a fact. If anyone should be ashamed, it is people who imply that being fat is a sign of weakness or somehow a failure because it isn't. It is uncomfortable and it may be unhealthy and it opens us up to the criticism of others, but we are all trying to get out of that situation.
/end rant, please feel free to pick holes and argue. I'm not trying to offend or be critical, it just makes me sad and angry to read that people are ashamed of saying how much they have to lose. It isn't your fault.

Baloostika · 12/05/2014 12:07

Darkhorse I am proudly Nigerian. Pls help pray for our deteriorating security situation, enough of playing politics with our lives.
Today is a FD and I'm aiming to do it dutifully cos I went carb crazy during the weekend at our Rotary Conference.
It feels so good to be back to my normal routine though I'm sleep deprived but that not withstanding I just have to try and be good.
Exercise done for the day, 90mins of strength and aerobics. Now at work and have downed two coffees and teas, plenty of water planned till I eat my bean soup later in d day, planning a LOF today.
Flowers and Brew to all Monday fasters.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/05/2014 12:12

Eat - just set your alarm clock for a minute after his. If he wakes you, you can cancel it; if he doesn't then he gets the beeping. Its totally up to him

msmoss · 12/05/2014 12:28

Just had some porridge and blueberries, yum. Thought I'd go for a fast day with proper food rather than soup today, am also working at home rather than safely in the office

rallytog1 · 12/05/2014 12:29

I totally agree with you Chocolate and I apologise for my choice of language, which in hindsight was a bit glib.

I know I'm not entirely responsible for my weight problems - in my own case, I put on a lot of weight after having my dd because I had some injuries during the emcs, which took a long time to recover from physically and meant I struggled to do any meaningful exercise for the best part of a year. Bf also didn't work out, despite a lot of help and support, which I found very difficult to deal with, and ended up comfort eating. I do however think I've used these things as an excuse for a bit too long, hence deciding to take control and do 5:2.

For me, I just felt that if I weighed myself at that start, I would have felt there was too much of a mountain to climb and may have been discouraged before I'd even started. So possibly I would have been better to say that I'm more fearful of the task ahead than ashamed about my starting point. I agree with you no one should be ashamed of their weight - instead we should feel proud for taking positive steps to improve our overall health.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/05/2014 12:47

Labra Take this week off, just ride your horse Envy and then resume training next Monday.
It is good practice for you to chill and just eat to TDEE in social situations.
Smile
Everybody:
A sensible exercise program is a great boost to health and can also accelerate fat loss.
Longterm, it avoids losing muscle while slimming and it raises TDEE so you can eat more.

BUT too much exercise can damage health AND stop weight loss (the exercise form of starvation mode). If you are constantly tired, you need to rest.

You cannot exercise away bad or excessive nutrition

Here you all are! Busy busy thread.

I have been crap all weekend. Lots of bread and wine and crisps and chocolate. Nightmare. Didn't weigh this morning as was afraid!

Have had a green smoothie for breakfast and some soup for lunch. Have some eggs boiling too. Trying to keep to 1,000 cals today. I won't survive 500.

Betsy - that power porridge sounds great. Might try it tomorrow.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/05/2014 12:48

Rally No need for anyone to weigh if it is stressful.
Just go by waist measurement or clothes feel.
Your size is absolutely nothing to do with your worth as a decent human being

BigChocFrenzy · 12/05/2014 12:53

Eat Maybe you could also add a cold wet flannel to the weekend early wakeup call for your DH (keep flannel overnight in a thermos)
Wink
Baloostika Good, now we know where you are. Hope all stays well in your immediate locale.

Prayers indeed Baloostica. It's a terrible situation. It must be heartbreaking to see the people of your home country in such tragic events.

FD here. Just back from HIIT class and nothing to eat so far. I have sweet potato and lentil soup planned for dinner with some chicken.

I made some pretty awful food choices at the weekend. Although I didn't eat until lunch time on Sat and Sunday and ate healthy, portion controlled meals, I also fell head first into the biscuit tin and must have ate...nearly 1000 calories worth of biscuits! Then to really round things off a Cadbury caramel and wotsits. Blush

I actually felt sick! Have tallied it up on MFP though and if I shave 200 cals off my NFDs this week I'll be back on an even keel.

(((hugs))) to Eat. Sometimes the men in our lives really are a bit dim aren't they?

The damp face cloth is a cracking idea Squirrelled. Luckily they both slept all night last night! Anyone with poor sleepers or early risers, or indeed late partiers, you have my sympathy!

Pretty gutted to find that my weight loss tracking on my phone has been deleted by one of the kids Sad. It had a record of my dates and milestones. It seems silly, but I'm really disappointed.

I have a wedding in 2 months time. I would love to lose 12lb for then, taking me to 3 stone total! Perhaps a bit ambitious as I'm now within a healthy BMI, but I'll give it a go.

Hang in there fasters! We're halfway there. Lots of Brew and we'll be fine!

We need a water emoticon - are you listening MNHQ?

Shatteredmamma1 · 12/05/2014 14:52

nims and almost yes would love to buddy up. Weighed myself this am and it was more than I thought Sad - my home scales can be a bit dodgy so I used the proper work ones. However 7 lb would still be my target as I am a normal BMI, and much as I would love to be a skinny Minnie a thin size 12 is the best I can hope for (or maybe a 10 if I get really motivated!) I am also struggling on the NFDs nims - it's almost like I'm making up for the FDs although obviously I'm trying not to!

FD today but aiming for 750 approx and will try to work down to 500 over the next few weeks. So far not too bad. Good luck for everyone else on a FD! Smile
