The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Hello Humphrey that sounds quite like torture, at least I don't have to cook for DCs today.
Mazzle sounds like you did your FD yesterday in which case hope you are enjoying some good nosh today....

MetellaEstMater · 26/05/2014 18:20

Well my FD has been a bit of a disaster. DD2 is cutting her first tooth and DD1 who is three has been winding DH up all day (they are peas in a pod and wind each other up with their shared stubborn trait!).

DH has suggested curry tonight and I'm already 500 cals down so may fast tomorrow instead. 5:2 is proving much harder since DH moved to 6:1 maintenance.

Humphrey I just made DD1 vege nuggets and chips so know the feeling!

Mazzle counts as a fast in my book!

Congratulations nims!

pannacotta Wow, studying and fasting. It's been a while since I've had to hit the books but I do know snacks were involved.

YY to everyone not being too hard on themselves!

Baloostika · 26/05/2014 19:10

FD complete. 24hr zero fast from lunch yesterday, broke my fast wit 3 dates. Just finished catfish soup and had 3 me medium sized mangoes as part of my meal. Water and black tea till lunch tomorrow.
Hang on all fasters, the day will soon be over.

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 19:13

I've got indigestion from spring onions Sad looking forward to FD tomorrow!

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2014 19:37

Oh, poor Spotty. How did that happen ?

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 19:39

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 19:39

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2014 19:40

Stay strong, Humphrey, Panacotts Not long to go .
As soon as you've had supper, clean your teeth to avoid temptation.

BetsyBell · 26/05/2014 19:52

No fasting for me today - DH asked if we were this morning and I said "no, it's a bank holiday" Grin

I think I'm likely to just have one fast this week on Wednesday, which is usually how it pans out during school holidays.

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 19:55

Thanks Fab but hands full with my own 2 x Madams! Girls wreck your head, boys wreck your house. Mine are making sure I don't miss having boys by fulfilling the house wrecking duties, I'll give them one thing, they're thorough on both scores! Sitting at 607 cals, kitchen closed but oh my I am starved. Hot cuppa will help I'm sure. Roll on nfd!

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 20:08

Sad I thought you were my friend Not2b. Sad

DD is so horrible to her brothers and it has really upset me tonight.

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 20:09

How old itsfab? My dd is pretty rotten atm too....

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 20:48

Wink Fab - chin up, it can't last forever... Say it can't please. My pair are kicking each other up the rump and competing in ballet walks, older one has started her hypochondriac show, starts at bedtime every night and will continue for at least the next hour.
Still flipping starving, sob sob, why can't it be tomorrow!!!!!

SquirrelledAway · 26/05/2014 20:50

Itsfab we found with DS he would leak at night if just wearing pajamas. We tried putting him in a clean pair of pants at bedtime, and that seemed to work - think his subconscious knows that his bladder shouldn't let fly in pants (he was completely dry during the day).

Pannacotta · 26/05/2014 20:53

I didn't last the course, felt wiped out from studying and resorted to wine, gruyere and grapes (after my 500 cals)!
Well done to those who made it...

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 20:55

She is 10 going on 15..

Everyone tells me it only gets worse...

Squirrelled - he sleeps in boxers. He must wake up as in the morning there often is wet ones on the floor and one night he slept the rest of the night on the plastic sheet as he didn't want to wake me Sad.

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 20:57

At least you went over with good stuff and not crap Smile.

SquirrelledAway · 26/05/2014 21:02

Itsfab my DS has done similar before now - threw up everywhere at 3 in the morning but cleaned up himself as he didn't want to wake us up. Very sweet but guaranteed to make you feel sooooo guilty.

jacketpotatowithtuna · 26/05/2014 21:26

Hey all! Late check in tonight. Had too much of booze last night and a massive hangover today, so very naturally it became a FD. What's up with all the leaking boys? Mine (6yo) bedwets too to the extent that his pull up anda sheet is wet. I resorted to offering him 5p for every dry night without nappy, but that ain't helping much.

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 21:39

A doctor once told me that the reason for the wetting was nearly always to do with the way they mature, something about a chemical that was the prompt for waking when needing a pee. Sorry I can remember the exact science'ey explanation but basically it was rarely something wrong and they do grow out of it. I did use the nappy pants for a good while, as I just couldn't keep up with the washing and it just dragged me down v low. I used to think the reason my dd1 wasn't dry at night was cause I used night pull-ups at the start but it wasn't that, it was just she wasn't there yet. On dd2, she was dry pretty much from training, bar the odd night. In her case, no pull-ups.
No easy answers, lord knows I tried everything, lifting a couple of times a night (broken back) no drinks after a certain time (v upset and thirsty child, felt soo cruel, couldn't keep that up) bribing (ended up with even more spoilt child lol) threats (tears from us all on that one)
Time worked, now I can barely remember how sh*t it was. But isn't that always the way, and that's a good thing.
Ok, I've slipped a little, so it's now a weak'ish FD of 740, I'm alright with that.

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 21:47

DS1 was late - about 7 1/2 but DS2 is 8.11 now and has been dry for about 4 months now (guess) so not sure why wetting again and how come dry at PIL? I only get cross when he doesn't tell me he has wet, doesn't strip the bed and leaves the duvet laid in the wet patch all day when it is too late to get it aired properly.

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 22:03

Ahh - was dry and now wet again Fab, sorry lazy reading on my part, I thought it was constant except for night at pils(where I assumed he might have been a but nervous, on high alert) Maybe he's embarrassed and that's why he's not telling you or just unthinking and not realising impact of leaving wet duvet etc. I'd protect the bed as best I could, reassure him you won't be cross if he wakes you, and take it day by day.
Ok, ate 2 more chewy sweets, god sake, I think I have to banish myself to bed! I have no self control

SpottyTeacakes · 27/05/2014 05:37

Oh no fab don't say it gets worse dd is only 3!

FD today, good luck fellow fasters, I'm just having a coffee then I'm going to jump in the shower before work. Need it to wake me up!

BigChocFrenzy · 27/05/2014 06:31

I'm FDing too, Spotty Happy fasting for us and all others today

AARGH, any clever Mumsnet experts on stains ?
(I'm messier than any DC)

Last night, I was totally soaked for 20 mins in a monsoon, while cycling home after training.
The old brown leather jacket I was wearing has left brown stains on my yellow T-shirt.
Hmm
It is my fav Adidas NEO T-shirt, with cat's meow motif, which is no longer manufactured.
Sad
I scrubbed with washing up liquid and soaked it, but a few brown marks still remain on the shoulders.
Any ideas how to remove stains - WITHOUT a washing machine ?
(wm was short-circuited 3 weeks ago by idiot heating engineer and their insurance is sloooow)
