Fasting / 5:2 diet

Talk about intermittent fasting and 5:2, including what’s worked for others. Mumsnet hasn't checked the qualifications of anyone posting here. You may wish to speak to a medical professional before starting any diet.

The 5:2 Thread number 44: Too big for your britches - or your skinny jeans, bikini, special dress ? Slim those fatted calves and waste that waist with 5:2 / IF

The continuing thread for those of us following 5:2 or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on BBC Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure ( TDEE - see explanation below).
4:3 is similar, except you fast on 3 days in the week.
ADF (Alternate-day fasting) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day.
16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on fast days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

FD = Fast Day

NFD = Non-Fast Day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links:
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMI already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women exercisers who reported health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • HOT DRINKS: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just count any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, over-stressed, have EDs, severe anxiety, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • CHECK with your Doctor: if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)

Sounds like pmt kicking in Fab, not sure what might be stressing you but you're doing great on the 5:2 front, I'm sure you could call today and FD and keeping away from the scales is an nsv for sure. Get your bit of exercise in next week and maybe some feel good endorphins will bubble up?
Helie, I'm with you on needing a restart, which is why I've decided I'm starting again. My new start date was last Friday and I start at 11.8.2, I'll be officially doing a WI on Thursday morning b4 I go on my hols. Managed an alcohol free day, a 16:8 which was 10% under tdee plus a 4 mile walk. I've decided there's no point in constantly referring to my start weight last year. I need to look at it freshly. FD all setup for tomorrow. Be great to get a HIIT session in tomorrow morning but we'll see what the morning brings. See you all for Monday FD.

MetellaEstMater · 25/05/2014 22:43

Aww shucks folks - thanks Blush

Enjoy the bank holiday everyone. In still in for a Monday fast.

vvviola · 25/05/2014 22:53

Monday FD kicking off here.

The petrol station this morning did it's best to derail me: fresh bread baking, coffee smells, hard sell from the guy at the till on deals on coffee and chocolate. Managed to resist, but it made me wish for the old places where you just say in the car and they came to you.

Regular work day here, and plenty of keep me busy, so once I don't succumb too the cold that's starting and want comfort food, I should be fine.

I've decided against tracking on NFDs for my first month. If I keep losing weight steadily then I won't track - partly because tracking brings out the sullen teenager in me (can't make me, this is stupid anyway, oh look I've gone over so I'll just clear out the biscuit tin) and partly because what I want from this WOE is not to have to count, and to retrain myself and my body to make sensible choices.

Obviously if it doesn't work or if things plateau then I'll have to get my inner teenager under control and just get on with it.

Gumblossom · 26/05/2014 00:01

vvviola, I am having a fast day too. I had to skip on Friday, then thought I might do it Saturday, that was a joke - had lunch with my sister at a cafe and succumbed to the hot chips (oh yum!). I actually felt like I might fall into a coma afterwards though - felt very sleepy. But I have been fighting a cold, and it's been making me feel pretty ordinary since Thursday. I'm hoping I'll get through a fast day today, because I like the way it makes me feel and have kind of missed it.

Like you, I have a bit of a problem with putting everything into MFP. My inner teenager behaves the same way! Grin

I've been using my jawbone monitor and have been really pleasantly surprised at how many steps I am doing. I didn't quite make goal (10,000) on Saturday, but yesterday I did 16,000, and most other days it's been close to 12,000. The jawbone also tells me how many calories I've burned (I am guessing it's just a formula based on my age, height and weight, so not exactly a precise science).

I'd love your input Bigchoc.I am not sure how accurate it would be about the calories, yesterday it was 2055, the day before I only managed 9174 steps, but still had a burn of 1796 calories. Would it be accurate? If I want to lose weight, I will obviously need to eat under. My goal was to eat about 1560, which is still goal, but lately I think I've been over (yes, I know, that's why I should log everything...sigh..)

Anyway, I am enjoying the new "toy", I'm sure I won't always be so keen, but right now I am enjoying knowing how many steps etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2014 01:02

Gum All these fitness trackers have accuracy problems measuring activity, except for the times you are doing an exercise that is easy to measure, such as a walk or run.

The problem is when they are not directly measuring something, but making guesses deductions.

They detect hand motion and translate that to physical movement, but can e.g. mistake a gesture, or reaching for a cup, as a step.
Still, daily steps are probably accurate to 10-15% and the tracker shows if you significantly increase / decrease your steps some days.

A few people have done detailled testing, instead of just regurgitating manufacturers' ads.
Results suggest trackers are NOT good at estimating cals, because that is so individual e.g CalsBurnt

So, super-clever software, great fun and many useful features, but do be sceptical about cals.

vvviola · 26/05/2014 01:43

Oh, I'm really struggling with the FD today.

I was actually looking forward to it yesterday, but I'm really finding it hard despite lots of water and lots of coffees. Another hour to go at work (thankfully the chocolate machine is down 4 flights of stairs or I'd have given in already), then grocery shopping to do on the way home, which is a real danger point.

I've a big salad planner for dinner, but that's not til 6 - so over 5 hours to go until then.

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 06:52

It's ok vvv you can have that bar of chocolate tomorrow!

I'm on a NFD today but I'm doing a

nims1981 · 26/05/2014 07:08

Morning everyone. I'm having such trouble checking in as I can't get the app on my phone to work, anyone else having same problem? I managed to skim through some and really hope everyone has better week this week. Lots of stressful days and poorly dc's :-(
I also had really stressful week and blew Thursday's RD out the window then I ate way over TDEE yesterday with 6 biscuits getting crammed in after finding out my parking at the airport wasn't actually booked! I'm travelling to France today with my 2 boys ( pretty nervous as have to drive to stansteard (2 and a 1/2 )on my own!!) going to fast till I ge

nims1981 · 26/05/2014 07:13

Get to France then I think I'll just have to relax and enjoy myself after a long day travelling with dc's.
Does anyone have any pointers for maintaining on holiday? So much food and wine!
I had a SV this week and I was 3 pounds down :-)
Good luck everyone I hope to catch up on thread and see how everyone else is getting on soon x

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 07:37

I'm going on holiday in two weeks (eek!) and plan on completely indulging. I bloody love Greek food. I will make up for it when I get home.

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 08:17

Morning all Smile

I am blue this morning and I think you were right Not2B with you PMT diagnosis Sad. I was hoping for a FD today and I will try.

Another wet bed from DC. I know he can't help it but what is weird is he has had one dry night in between when he stayed at MIL Confused. Mattress is smelly. Put bicarb on it yesterday but I guess it didn't work as it needs to go on when bed is wet? I have protectors but if DH makes the bed then he doesn't put enough on. Had planned to steam it today but it is raining so can't go in the garden to dry.

Good luck today vvv. You have already resisted the evil petrol station man Grin so the rest of the day will be a breeze.

Well done on your SV nims.

SpottyTeacakes · 26/05/2014 08:23

Can't help with the smell but we put a bin liner under dd's waterproof sheet and normal sheet. It really stops it getting to the mattress. She only wets when under the weather though.

almostthereagain · 26/05/2014 08:41

Well done nims see it was worth hanging in there! Good luck with your journey, have a great time. I have always managed ok on hols & only put on a few lbs which have come back off after only a couple of fasts. I eat & drink what I want but don't go crazy. No b'fast if not hungry, only eat croissants/ pastries if they're really good, lots of lovely salad & veg & only eat to fill rather than stuffed. The' I can have it tomorrow' (cheese/pudding etc) wol works really well. If I really want ice cream , say & it's good I'll have it but then only eat lunch when I'm hungry rather than just because it's lunch time. Hope that makes sense. Certainly don't deprive yourself, it's your holiday, enjoy!

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 09:28

DH has announced we need a different sheet Hmm. Given there are 2 waterproof ones I am not sure why he thinks a plastic one would be any better. Have sent him out to get one since he seems to know best. He also wants to put him back in nappies but no way. DC would be upset and feel we were blaming him.

vvviola · 26/05/2014 09:56

Kitchen closed with FD coming in at 550 cal (a slight heaviness of hand with the olive oil tipped me over). Am pleased I managed to resist all temptation. A few rice cakes at the supermarket stopped me going off the rails at the sweet counter. Grin

Shatteredmamma1 · 26/05/2014 10:05

I feel the same vvv - fed up of thinking about food frankly!
Well done nims

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2014 11:16

Well done on your FD, vvv

Nims Over the XMas hols, I did ADF with about 700 cal FDs. I ate LOTS out on the NFDs, but managed to avoid any weight gain.
Would your DCs notice or care ?

BigChocFrenzy · 26/05/2014 11:18

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 11:44

PMT attack averted by doing what always works.

Roast chicken and dauphinoise potatoes in the oven. Apple pie waiting to go in. Dough for chocolate Chelsea buns rising in the airing cupboard. Might have this as a nearly FD given that DH came back with a massive tiger bloomer loaf and medicinal fruit and nut HmmGrin.

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 11:50

Didn't you pretty do an FD yesterday Fab (sympathy in wet bed, my dd was nearly 8 before we cracked it, wet sheets/mattress are depressing) If I were you I'd be nice to myself and eat some if that delicious fare! Why oh why did you have to say what you were cooking, starving here Grin

Not2bObvious · 26/05/2014 11:51

Pretty much do an FD is what I was trying to say! Don't fall into old traps of being too hard on yourselfFlowers

Itsfab · 26/05/2014 12:19

I am confusing myself here as Monday is normally always a fast day. I think I will have dinner but not too much of it.

Sorry for posting my cooking.

DC is 8 and has been dry for about 3 months (both my boys were later than DD) but no idea why he isn't able to do it at the moment.

I have taken your don't be hard on yourself advice and will tell myself it but not use it as an excuse to over eat. I will also claim a NSV. My jeans are falling down a bit and I can't remember if I usually wear a belt with these so will claim anyway Grin.

Before when I said I couldn't be obese, I know I can't be as I was weighing in about 2lbs over my ideal weight according to one chart Confused.

Pannacotta · 26/05/2014 12:22

Hello all am having a FD day today as home alone studying but find it so hard to concentrate when I am hungry.
Have had a boiled egg and about to have soup but I do struggle with hunger pangs....
Hope someone out there can keep me company!
Happy BH everyone.

HumphreyCobbler · 26/05/2014 12:41

Hello Pannacotta, I am having a fd too and currently cooking homemade baked beans and pizza for the kids. I must be mad

MazzleDazzle · 26/05/2014 13:41

I was supposed to be fasting today, but can't really face it. Over-indulged on the booze on Sat, didn't eat enough, just a small meal...hence a terrible hangover yesterday. Was unable to eat until 7pm. DH was having a Chinese takeaway. I had a tiny nibble, but that's it, so I suppose yesterday was a FD?

Went to HIIT this morning, then had whole grain toast and scrambled egg. Was rather yum! I

Good luck to everyone fasting today! I hope you all enjoy the bank holiday, especially if you're on a NFD!
