The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

BCF thank u for the clarification, I downloaded a Tabata time so I might aim to do the eight reps or whatever it's called. By the way I did imaginary jump rope with the tabata this morning and it was quite heart pumping, I did just the in round but I'm aiming to go further though I do 5 times with the boxing punching bag at my gym.
NFD today and I just had popcorn with black coffee for brunch.

dinkystinky · 06/05/2014 14:26

Hello all - hope you had a good bank holiday and belated happy birthday to Humphrey. Welcome also to the new starters - I'm a relatively recent starter and am loving all the support and great ideas on the thread. Managed a FD yesterday despite it being a bank holiday AND eating out with DH and the kids at lunch time (stuck to small octopus salad and bottled water and it was yummy - didnt even try to eat any of the bread on the table and would usually snaffle a few pieces). And it showed on the bill (as normally DH and I would have a nice bottle of wine between us - yesterday DH just had a glass of house white). Am rather hoping that this WOL helps keep grocery bills and restaurant bills down as am facing expensive moth fumigation work on the house this month as well as damp repair (I dont live in a hovel, honest).

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2014 14:39

I think I'd be happy with my current weight if less of it was fat and more of it was muscle!

Anyway - after DH left, I went for a 4 mile walk/jog as before - my HIIT intervals are 15-20 secs as fast as I can but then need 2-3 times that recovery before I feel ready to go again. Probably should work on cutting that down at least for the first few. Then got home - pint of water with a dash of plj followed by miso (needed that!)and a diet coke in the garden...hope my garden is as un-overlooked as I believe it to be as I changed into shorts and just had my (very decent) sports bra on. More liquid and my second go at 6w6p ... seem to have strained something in one arm so had to miss a couple of moves.

More water, fruit tea - not hungry/ Smile

ColdFeetWarmHeart · 06/05/2014 14:50

Can I just ask, how do all use your calories on FDs? Do you just have a dinner in the evening? Do you have a small breakfast, and then nothing until a small dinner?

I had been planning on just having a dinner when I get home from work (9:30pm), but I just had to have something to eat for lunch! I didn't think I could get through work otherwise!!

SpottyTeacakes · 06/05/2014 14:52

I am not hungry. It's all in my mind.

Spag bol for dinner so I'm having my bolognese stuffed in a pepper with salad Smile

Id be happy with my weight if my stomach wasn't so wobbly Hmm

ColdFeetWarmHeart · 06/05/2014 14:53

My hunger is definitely not in my mind - it's definitely stomach hunger! lol

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2014 15:07

ColdFeet - I spend most of my calories on dinner. I've decided that starting the day without my usual couple of large mugs of milky tea really didn't suit me - and I like one at 'teatime' and another at bedtime - so I've got rather a large allowance for skimmed milk. 'Lunch' is just miso soup. And obv drink lots of herbals, the odd black coffee, plenty of water.

plecofjustice · 06/05/2014 15:55

Just had a salad incident on my fast day!! How many calories in 1/2 a slug?! Shock ewwwwwwwww

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2014 16:11

Ew indeed. Negligible and mostly protein.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/05/2014 17:27

Bleugh at slug!!

Nearly dinner time here, will have done 23 hour LOF which is my longest yet. Feel really good actually :)
Dinner is chicken kiev and a big pile of green veg - courgette, kale and asparagus. Yum yum.

SpottyTeacakes · 06/05/2014 17:33

Yuck at slug!

My dinner is ready but ds isn't very well and won't let me put him down so I can't eat it

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2014 17:41

Spotty - I seem to remember resorting to chopping up food one-handed with scissors and shovelling it in with fork or spoon from a bowl, when I had a clingy LO. Sympathies.

I've got a ready meal (DH bought it for himself but then didn't fancy it) - M&S venison, pot&parsnip mash and a (too small) helping of cabbage. Will have it later with some extra veg.

SpottyTeacakes · 06/05/2014 17:48

He's usually not too bad, only when I'm actually cooking, but he seems a bit under the weather. Dd has made him happy by sharing her chocolate mousse with him Hmm now I want a chocolate mousse! Sad I have enough cals left but I'm going to resist.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/05/2014 17:57

Stash one at the back of the fridge so you can HIT (Have It Tomorrow) Wink.

SpottyTeacakes · 06/05/2014 18:02

There's three in there! Will only have one tomorrow though Wink

HumphreyCobbler · 06/05/2014 18:38

hello again
Am 1 egg and a can of basil infused tuna down. About 340 calories.
Very pleased I managed to stick to it as, unusually for me, I spent the day feeling starving and knackered.

I even managed to resist the cherry cake Smile by putting it in the freezer Grin

Eatriskier · 06/05/2014 19:29

choc twist when I was losing I set a target of BMI 22 just nominally, but getting under 25 was set in stone. I lost more after I hit my nominal goal weight (just an extra half stone) whilst settling into maintaining and I can see losing more won't make me look or feel any better, I'm probably the lowest I can be where I look skinny but not scrawny.

dizhin79 · 06/05/2014 19:34

think it was a day off feeling hungry today! have managed a fd so far but just had to swap with dh putting our lo to bed as my stomach was growling loudly! Grin Made a very hearty soup for tea, scoffing it as we speak Grin

TalkinPeace · 06/05/2014 19:37

Interesting article in New Scientist last week moaning that BMI is too broad a brush for many
and reiterating the height / waist ratio
but more importantly that fitness and exercise are incredibly important

One nice thing with 5:2 is that you lose gradually and do not feel starving every day so can put the effort into getting toned
so that the butterfly that emerges from the caterpillar is toned and healthy as well as slimmer

MazzleDazzle · 06/05/2014 19:45

Well done to the many fasters today!

FD for me here, but feel a bit of a fraud calling it such. Was so busy all day I hardly noticed I hadn't eaten. Had a really small supper of chicken & salmon salad. Then as it was my DM's birthday I had half a cup cake. Yes, I could have had it tomorrow, but her birthday is today! Pretty sure I still came in at under 500 cals though.

So many of you seem to be doing well today! Hopeful the SVs and NSVs will come thick and fast.

Helliecopter · 06/05/2014 19:45

Just checking in at the end of my FD...I've just had a couple of squares of 85% dark chocolate (within cals!) so I'm closing the kitchen and sipping on peppermint and liquorice tea until bedtime, which will be soon because I'm cream-crackered today!
Hope everyone else fasting today has had a good day...and good NFDs as well. Off to check back through the posts.

Not2bObvious · 06/05/2014 19:51

Howdy all. Just kicking back with a cuppa catching up on all the fasting news. Completed my FD at 590, feeling ok, bit tired as it was a hectic day but all round happy in my head. I'm contemplating a tabata workout in the morning, if I can manage it - finally stopped aching from the mega long workout I did last week, anything that hurts that much gotta be good for you rightGrin
Hmm, ideal weight, I think I'm around 11.2-11.4, I need to get to 10.5 to hit healthy bmi, but dream weight is 9.13. I'm coming up to my anniversary of 5:2, I think it was around the 21st of may I started? I'd be super thrilled if I could get down to 10.12 by then (starting weight 12.5) but hey go if I don't, I feel much better and I physically look much better. Never ever stick to anything like I have to this, go 5:2!

MazzleDazzle · 06/05/2014 19:56

Nearly forgot why I came on here!

DD1 had the most almighty tantrum at my DM's house. Had to drag her out under my arm kicking, screaming and digging her nails into my arm. DH is away, so I was on my own with the 2 DC. Youngest is only 2 - she was so scared of her big sister's screaming that she started sobbing her heart out. Had to cut our visit short and come home Blush.

Not long packed them off to bed. Was tempted to reach for the Cake and Wine so thought I'd come on here. Then I read about all the Tuesday fasters slogging away and I felt better straight away Grin.

Oh bloody hell! I can hear footsteps thumping down the stairs.

DD2 has just announced she's wet the bed.

(sigh)

Eatriskier · 06/05/2014 20:28

Have some virtual Cake and Wine instead mazzle

I made the mistake of letting DD pick out a treat and she chose jelly tots. I thought well, they're not so bad. Apparently that was a bad idea. She turned into demon child!

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/05/2014 20:47

Successful FD completed - has come in around 520 calories.

Mazzle sympathies, evenings like that are awful. Hope you've got some peace now!
