The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Thanks, Betsy, very interesting link.
Smile
The 5:2 stork has been a busy bird, but sounds like you are doubly safe, naicesex ^^

naicesex · 03/05/2014 17:29

Yeah that is interesting Betsy. I've been googling ankles and 5:2 and havnt found much either. I did find a case of a woman who experienced it only for it to disappear suddenly much like the woman in the link.

Bloods will tell for sure.

naicesex · 03/05/2014 17:30

Sorry - typo in original message 16:21 - its suspected protein in blood not urine.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2014 22:02

naice - no idea as to the cause, but elevating the feet can help swollen ankles - really elevating, so that when you're sitting your feet are at least as high as your seat (not just a low footstool), and at night either a pillow under the ankles or raise the bottom of your bed on blocks.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2014 22:15

Just worked out that if I get to mid-range BMI (21.5), that'd be 8st 2 which would give me a sedentary TDEE of 1271. Blimey. Better not be sedentary then, huh?!

BigChocFrenzy · 03/05/2014 23:03

Healthy Body Fat Percentages at Different Ages:
HealthyBF

Errol Don't aim for a particular BMI:
aim for a % body fat in the "fit" range or the waist you want and build more muscle. This will give you a more sustainable TDEE.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2014 23:11

BC - that was exactly the conclusion I'd come to! Grin

dizhin79 · 03/05/2014 23:46

so I've done 2 weeks, am down 7lb, this is also from my pre pregnancy weight too Grin

My first goal was to lose a stone, which is very much within reach Grin Grin
I'm actually really excited about doing more fasts next week! I am obviously a very reward motivated person lol.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/05/2014 23:50

dishun, that's great, well done!

Goodnight ... past time I was abed. Smile

dizhin79 · 03/05/2014 23:52

and betsy that post is really interesting! having just been pregnant and experienced water retention for the first time ever during my last couple of weeks. I can vouch for the dramatic exit of it.

Not2bObvious · 04/05/2014 08:07

Well done Dishin! 7 pound in 2 weeks is fantastic and to have got below pre-preg weight, you must be thrilled. I have no idea where I am weight wise as my scales is banished at the min, but I feel good, clothes are fitting well. I did a tabata workout yesterday and while it was tough, I did it!! So proud of myself, I managed some burpees- they were the worst looking burpees ever but I did them, that's an nsv for me for sure. Bit of a head this morning, had a great night out with dh but drank a bit too much damn cocktails I'm mainlining tea/water, no real hunger yet so I'll see can I manage a 16:8 as I did have quite a big meal and lots of sugary cocktails. I'm taking a rest day from exercise as I've done a lot this week and dh who is massively supportive instructed me too. I think I've entered that rare state of exercise addiction - my legs are hanging of me though so time to listen. So, anyone fasting today?

SpottyTeacakes · 04/05/2014 08:46

The waist measurement for the body fat calculator, is that actual waist of around belly button. The area where my belly button is is full of lumpy scar tissue Sad so adds quite a few inches on

BetsyBell · 04/05/2014 09:48

spotty Waist measurement on women is usually at the narrowest point - often to be found a few cm up from the bellybutton.

SpottyTeacakes · 04/05/2014 10:33

Thanks. That puts me in the very upper end of normal...

BigChocFrenzy · 04/05/2014 12:21

Well done, dizhin79. Great start
Smile
We're at a little wine festival in a lovely Rhine village.
Wine somehow tastes quite different when only a few hundred yds from the grapes and served directly from the winehouse that oressed them.

We've explored the castle with its glorious rose gardens. Lunch was sitting on the quayside wall in the lovely sunshine.
Just polished off a flammkuchen with bacon, goats cheese, walnut, balsamico dresssing, plus frozen yoghurt with grated white choc for pud.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/05/2014 12:23

My reports should be entitled "stuffed & sozzled along the Rhine"
Smile

Southeastdweller · 04/05/2014 14:05

Great result dizhin Flowers

bbcessex · 04/05/2014 14:45

well done dizhin79 - that's fantastic.. half a stone, woo hoooo!!!

I'm a bit miserable today; after my 4lbs SV yesterday, had a NFD.. it was a Saturday so was happy to relax TDEE a bit, but kids drove me bananas so ending up having half a bottle of wine, half a really not worth it easter egg and some crisps... didn't enjoy it, just stuffed all in gob. Pah. no willpower.

Having an extra FD today instead... note to self: only eat / drink when enjoying it.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 04/05/2014 15:05

BigChoc your holiday sounds amazing! We do quite a lot of wine tasting when we're in France and you are so right about the wine tasting better when you drink it where it is 'born'. Am Envy of your lunch today. Yum yum.

Well done dizhin! Grin

16:8 for me again today - just been for a lovely walk in the woods. Family coming for a roast later - will definitely go over TDEE!

dizhin79 · 04/05/2014 15:06

mmmmm all this talk of wine and chocolate...... thanks for the congrats all Grin have been gardening all day going to take the dog out now to work some different muscles and get out of doing any more strimming

veryseriousgirl · 04/05/2014 16:43

Congratis dizhin! And good avoidance strategy on strimming. Smile I'm sure the dog is seriously grateful.

Am despairing here - weighed in at 4lbs down from last week on FD on Thu but had guests over the weekend and am now terrified to get on the scale (wine and puddings!). I cooked it all, so it's my fault but feeling really bad about having reversed the good work I did last week.

Also, not fasting again till Tue as DH is away overnight and it's easier when he's gone (I can eat with kids, load the dishwasher and then kitchen is closed until morning). Wish I were fasting tomorrow.

How do you get back on track after a mad weekend? I feel like hanging my head in shame... Sad

Megrim · 04/05/2014 18:54

veryserious have a sensible day tomorrow with lots of healthy stuff (veg and protein), try to stick to a bit below TDEE, and feel virtuous going into your FD on Tuesday.

You would have to have consumed an extra 12000 calories to have undone your 4lb loss (which would be pretty impressive eating and drinking over a weekend!).

MetellaEstMater · 04/05/2014 18:57

Good work dizhin!

veryserious I guess the beauty of this WOL is the fact you can have an indulgent weekend with minimal damage. Just think had you not fasted lat week the damage would be much worse. And you never know, the scales may surprise you! If the wort happens and you gain you now know exactly how to fix it.

I'm not fasting tomorrow but Tuesday and Thursday instead this week ahead of a weekend away with DH, followed by joining our DDs and my parents on holiday. Our weekend will probably be quite indulgent (all a surprise so no idea where we are going) but the holidays with DPs will involve lots of walking, swimming, weights and at least two mini fasts. I'm running the London 10k three weeks today so have to stay on track!

Tiredemma · 04/05/2014 18:57

Ive really fallen off the wagon.

Not gained any weight though- just maintained for the past few weeks.

Im having a chinese tonight and then tomorrow I am going to make a very concerted effort to shift these last 7lbs.

Someone inspire me for a FD tomorrow.

ChocolateTwist · 04/05/2014 20:16

Emma 7lbs is really really close! Just think of the past few weeks as getting your second wind for the final push, you want the weight gone and you want to eat nice stuff and you can have both, you just need to postpone the food occasionally. I'm going to be fasting with you tomorrow and lots of other people will too. You have got this :)
