The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8.

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day.

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory.

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^

-Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • BREASTFEEDERS: Start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: Is healthy & can help weight loss if you you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.
  • Do NOT fast : If pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So eat to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor: If you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate).

Errol - thanks! I mainlined green tea and the pain and ravenous hunger has gone. I have never fasted in my life before so this is all new! I think I can hold out until dinner in three hours now Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2014 16:32

Scarlet - good! One of the things you learn is that its ok to feel hungry, and that it doesn't get worse and worse! Unless you've got a medical problem (like diabetes), so long as you're not dehydrated you can keep going... well, what else is fat for except storing a bit of energy for when you need it?

Positive I've got PCOS... I was relatively lucky in that my main symptoms were problems TTC and acne (esp when off the pill trying to do that) ... while never thin, its only in the last couple of years I've gone over healthy BMI range. I think you will find that once you've lost weight you will find this helps the PCOS - that and developing healthy eating habits, low GI/lowish carb is definitely helpful.

rallytog1 · 01/05/2014 16:42

Well done Scarlet! I wonder if the pain was because of having spicy food on an empty stomach? - that sometimes gives me pains.

I'm on my third ever FD today and I have to tell you that it is getting progressively easier. Today hasn't been too difficult at all, even after being up all night with a 12mo who's apparently allergic to sleep. So fingers crossed you'll find it easier very quickly too.

Southeastdweller · 01/05/2014 16:53

No one should have ready access to biscuits and stuff in the cupboards - it's not good for anyone - not adults or kids. Point them to the fruit bowl instead.

Or/and have a bowl of veg in the fridge with some healthy dips in other bowls for everyone to help themselves when they want to. I used to make my own hummus when I had a blender - much lower in cals and salt than the shop bought stuff and with a refreshing clean taste.

Spices and herbs are great things to add to veg to make the veg more interesting. It never occurred to me until last year to try raw veg but a fave salad last summer was raw broccoli with hummus and chilli seeds.

User989546711 · 01/05/2014 17:07

Yes Rally, I think the pain could have been chilli on an empty stomach. Now it seems obvious! Will save that for dinner next time. So pleased it is getting easier for you to fast. I'm usually up with one of the little ones if not both (two under two) and wondered how it'd be to be hungry on no sleep...

Errol - yep hunger is a new sensation. I've never willingly skipped breakfast before today Shock

MazzleDazzle · 01/05/2014 17:14

Welcome Water. I was 205lb at 5ft 8" when I started, so similar to you now.

Been 5:2ing for 5 months now and I've lost 2 stone. As well as eating healthier, for the last 4 months I've worked out 4 times a week. I can now squeeze into a size 12.

Stick with this WOL and this is where you could be by the end of the Summer!

And welcome Scarlet! How's the first FD going? Hang in there! Remember, you can have it tomorrow!

I have a work out class at 7pm, so had an early dinner. Also had 2 meringue nests with passion fruit and Greek yogurt. Yum! And 100 cals saved for the weekend. Kitchen is now closed!

Not sure if my next FD will be tomorrow or Sat.

I'm walking 15 miles on Sunday, much of it hilly! After that I'm hitting the pub and spending my saved calories!

Eatriskier · 01/05/2014 17:42

Just popping in to say hello. Have fallen off thread as I can't really concentrate much. I did wish mazzle happy birthday but apparently forgot to hit send... Hope it was a good one anyway!

Broke my fast spectacularly - with a giant spoon of chocolate and hazelnut ganache. Turns out I can't resist licking the spoon - though I did make a large tart for my neighbour and 4 mini ones for the kids/guests so I did make it hard for myself. That's it though, and have made it to dinner nearly so am not going to beat myself up.

Anyone else freezing today?

SpottyTeacakes · 01/05/2014 17:44

I've just had the bbc good food chorizo pilaf. I halved the recipe and added extra veg so I reckon it was under 300cals. Not super healthy but nice on a cold rainy day!

FD tomorrow so I'm closing the kitchen now and the first chance I will get to eat tomorrow will be 2pm. Will make sure I drink plenty.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 01/05/2014 17:45

Goodness this thread is moving fast! Wink

Well done to everyone, and hi to new people Smile

I managed to go to the gym and run 10kms today, a FD. My goodness it was tough! Confused

TalkinPeace · 01/05/2014 17:55

Lucy_dinos just looked at your pictures WELL DONE YOU you look so much better.

Raw veg
Courgettes, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, cabbage, celery
lots and lots of veg (basically anything except spuds)
then dunk it in

  • sour cream
  • hummus
  • creme fraiche
  • salsa
  • tatziki
  • bean dip
also grated veg, stirred into creme fraiche with lemon juice is rather yummy
lucyintheskywithdinos · 01/05/2014 19:09

Thank you everyone. I don't have astonishing willpower...I have 5:2 so I don't need it! I'm more happy that 5:2 has sorted out my comfort eating than I am about the weight loss tbh!

I am enjoying the amount of male attention I get now though!

I like my raw veg dressed in soy sauce and Siracha chilli sauce. I usually have that for lunch on a FD.

SpottyTeacakes · 01/05/2014 19:14

Wow lucy, amazing!

rallytog1 · 01/05/2014 19:15

Wow Mazzle that's amazing! I'm just starting out, also 5ft 8 and a similar weight. Can't quite believe a size 12 might be in reach!

Bimblepops · 01/05/2014 19:35

Hello Scarlet and Water

I'm feeling very pleased with myself - made it to dinner time without mucking up my fast day. Had a big bowl of curry, plus two very small slices of gammon, I estimate cals at about 350, so am on target for 500cals for the day.

Off to a meeting now, then bed when I get back, so definitely no more calories going in today

Am weighing in tomorrow morning and have to admit I'm sort of expecting a gain on last weeks 11.11, I've eaten well etc, but just feel bigger for some reason.

I won't be able to 5:2 next week, as I've got two days of low-fibre diet followed by a day of absolute fasting and laxatives (yay for medical procedures!) and I think adding more fasting on top of that would be insane!

Well done to all fellow Thursday fasters!

Blondieminx · 01/05/2014 19:49

Thanks BigChoc will pop over to exercise thread...

dizhin79 · 01/05/2014 19:57

hey all, I'm loving today's fd so far! have treated myself to a skinny latte with a friend, had a 16 hour fast ending this morning and have just really filled up on salad and rice cakes followed by lentil soup. feel stuffed now..... just hope the evening munchies are kept at bay now :)

Well done other Thursday fasters and welcome newer newbies Grin week 2 nearly done for me Grin

BetsyBell · 01/05/2014 20:11

Low calorie dipping sauces: I would go for replacing anything creamy based (sour cream, creme fraiche, mayonnaise etc) with yogurt based stuff - but adding all the same flavours. So could add things like cumin seeds, garlic and fresh coriander and maybe a squeeze of lemon juice. Or garlic, cucumber and mint to make a tsatsiki. Or chili, coriander and lime for a fajita-esque sour cream. Just try things out from your herb and spice collections! Fresh herbs where possible and it's often worth toasting the spices a little. Nigella seeds (not toasted) make a lovely addition to yogurt with a curry as it tastes like naan bread.

I dress my fast day salads with yogurt, lime/lemon juice and pepper. I now can't stomach the oiliness of mayonnaise having got used to the fresh, zinginess of that easy combo.

I often cover/cooked fish and veggies in a sauce/dressing of grated ginger, garlic, pepper, chilli and lime juice, which I never get tired of.

Otherwise, any kind of home made salsa would be low calorie. Humous is great too but chick peas and tahini are quite calorific (but nutritious) so go easy on a fast day, eat plenty on NFD.

SpottyTeacakes · 01/05/2014 20:23

I often freeze my fresh herbs as I can't keep them alive Hmm still good to throw into things though. I LOVE coriander I reckon I could just eat that on a FD Grin

BetsyBell · 01/05/2014 20:24

Southeast Yes to raw veg and dips too! Do you find that cut veg dries out quickly though? I tend to present them as part of a meal, but freshly chopped. I suspect no one except me would help themselves, and I'm really trying to avoid snacking, even the healthy kind.

Yes Bigchoc raw. It's a revelation I tells ya! I didn't believe it could be so.

choctwist Are you wanting some recipe ideas for mushrooms and tomatoes? What sort of things do you already do with them - I'll think of alternatives for you!

Eatriskier I had a mishap with some peanut butter and nutella yesterday Blush. Not proud.

Fab photos lucy What a difference, you look wonderful!

positively I forgot to reply to you - you might have missed the thread where I'd just worked out I'd had a 6 month stall (or as I like to call it maintenance Grin). Don't despair - we can't lose all the time but we can sure as hell not pile it all back on again if you stick to it. I'm still fasting twice a week most of the time as I know it would creep back up if I don't. But I'm happy to have found a way to keep it off simply. And keep healthy of course. I'll bet you'll shift that extra again soon enough, just keep the faith!

rally I've been this weight before and been a chubby, unfit size 14-16. Goes to show that what the scales say isn't the most important thing.

I had a lovely day thank you eat!

Wow Betsy, such wonderful flavours. Yum, yum!

MazzleDazzle · 01/05/2014 20:34

Been invited out for dinner tomorrow to my fav. restaurant, so it'll have to be a Saturday FD. It'll be a tough one after an indulgent Fri night!

Not2bObvious · 01/05/2014 20:50

Evening all, I haven't had a chance to read through today's chat - been a bit busy I think! I did get a look at your pics Lucy, wow, just wow! That's amazing, you look great. Now I just have to read back properly so I can see how you done itGrin
FD2 has gone okay...but on the high side, smidge over 800. I did a HIIT workout from YouTube, 1hr24mins of warmup/HIIT/weights/core/cool down. Optimistically called the 1000 calorie workout, eh not quite when I do it. Fitbit recorded about 340 burn for the workout (pls pls pls no one say fitbit underestimates, I think I'll cry!)
But no matter, I have managed 2 pretty ok fd's and the rest of my days were good enough. Off to catch up and all your news and newbiesWink

Eatriskier · 01/05/2014 20:52

Wow lucy - brilliant work!
