The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Michael Mosley has a website to accompany his book on the subject. Please go check it out, as he's the whole reason most of us are here!

Lurkers and new starters: please just jump in and post - you'll find a lot of support here and we’re a friendly bunch.

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Hi all and welcome wishes and chicaboo. Nice to have you on board. My DC have flown the nest so I don't have any advice, but I'm sure one of the 'younger' mums will be here soon with helpful tips.

I've had two very bad days. Tuesday I was set for an NFD. But there was a huge box of chocs at work, left in the kitchen for anyone to help themselves unseen, so I thought to myself at mid-morning that I could have just one as it was an NFD and all would be fine. Of course it wasn't. I spent the rest of the day in and out of the kitchen getting more chocolates. Then I did that thing you shouldn't do, and thought 'Now I've blown it I may as well binge' so I nipped out and bought a packet of chocolate digestives (a large one) and a giant Milky Bar and ate the lot. Yesterday I didn't make it past first thing in the morning. I'm ashamed to admit that on the way to work I broke in to my 'emergency' tenner in the sealed envelope and bought two bagels and two croissants which I ate straight away. I had a lunchtime meeting in another building, where I ate biscuits provided by work, and on the way back I bought another two bagels and two croissants.

Well, that's the bad news. The good is that I managed to walk on past the gazillion supermarkets, newsagents and cafes that I pass on the way to work this morning. I was planning today as an NFD because an FD felt impossible when I left the house. I have NFD food with me, but I'm feeling quite positive now for some reason so I may turn it into an FD instead, I'll see how it goes.

Morning all! I am also on my first ever fast day today and have already been scuppered by waking up with a horrible headache, which is related to the time of the month.

Can anyone recommend a low-calorie snack I can have to line my stomach so I can take some painkillers?! I can't take anything on an empty stomach.

I'm excited about finally doing something about my excess weight - I've never been skinny but I would like to get back down to a size 12-14 before we ttc again. Fortunately dh is joining me in trying 5+2 so at least there is moral support at home!

Helliecopter · 24/04/2014 09:02

Hello! Back after my very exciting day yesterday.
The famous chef I met was....drumroll please....
Nigel Slater!
He's absolutely lovely. Quite shy. Quite scruffy! He is making a documentary about cake (following the ones he did on sweets and biscuits) and he came along to one of our cake club events. He baked us a gorgeous cake (I got to eat cake baked by Nigel Slater in his own kitchen!) and he ate a big wedge of my cake too! Photo sorry is of his cake. Lemon with a passion fruit drizzle.
It'll be on tv sometime after September. I'll be on it for all of 3 seconds I'm sure. But a very fun day.

B&W I don't mind being outed a little bit. It's not like I'm famous or owt!

Errol From Preston but I live in Manchester now. Filming was in Leeds :)

Food...well,considering the even I think I did quite well! I didn't eat a scrap all day until cake club and then we didn't get to eat cake until about 5:30pm. I'd gone totally beyond hunger by then. Managed a piece of Nigel's and a few teeny tastes of others and I hit the cake wall. Train back to Manchester and went for a burger with my cakey friends. Much needed, although weirdly I had gone totally beyond hunger. It was a lovely, proper burger though and I needed it more than I thought! So I'm not sure what to do today. I'm ridiculously tired and feel really hungry this morning. Late night burger clearly the culprit there. I could really do with brekkie but I'm not sure if I should soldier on and try to fast or not. Hmm.

Chica - my DD is a teen, but DH and I both work from home so there's always food around - just try to be mindful on FDs 'do I really want this?' and 'I can have it tomorrow' may help.

If your mouth is bored, giving your teeth an extra good clean, and chewing gum may help. Actually, having some gum in probably helps avoid absentmindedly scarfing a kiddy nibble. Good luck!

Angie - I don't do fast5 but I think all those restricted hour things are NFD (some people do it every day instead of actual FDs I think).

WeShouldOpenABar · 24/04/2014 09:22

I was doing slimming world for the first couple of months of the year with no luck, but its healthy eating so no harm anyway.
moved to ADF which I had success with before and was on it 8 weeks trying not to let the scales deter me and sticking with it hoping for results.
small losses here and there kept me going but its very frustrating to only eat 400 calories a day three days a week and still not lose any weight. I gave up for the long weekend and ate what i wanted but didnt binge and actually only missed two fast days and I'm back up to where I started the year. its not just water my clothes got tighter my hips got bigger.

I could cry I started in January thinking slow and steady so I could lose for my holiday next week and now im going away falling out of my bikinis and despairing of the answer. If will power wont help me I dont know what to do.

Bimblepops · 24/04/2014 09:36

Thanks, Errol.

Hellie - I'm rather jealous, I love Nigel Slater. Sounds like a wonderful afternoon.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/04/2014 09:47

rally - not ignoring you, but I'm not sure what would be best (rarely get a headache that isn't sorted by caffeine and hydration). Isn't something with a bit of fat best for 'lining the stomach' - so maybe some full-fat yogurt? If today turns into a mini-fd for you that's still a good start. You have to work with your body, not against it.

rallytog1 · 24/04/2014 10:32

Thanks Errol. I was wondering about jacking it in altogether for today, but I've made excuses for so long that I think I just need to get on with it! Just cracked and had a boiled egg for late breakfast, so hopeful that is enough lining. Black coffee and a lot of water are also helping. Onwards and upwards!

Helliecopter · 24/04/2014 10:42

WeShouldOpenABar

With 400 calories 3 days a week, you should be creating a calorie deficit to give you a weight loss. Are you keeping track of what you're eating on the other days? You should really only be eating around 1800 calories or so, depending on your size and how much you have to lose. 5:2 isn't a speedy weight loss programme...it's more long term with other health benefits but if you do it right, you should be losing.
Sorry you're so disheartened. But talk to us and we can probably help you...with willpower you CAN do it, if you're doing it right Smile

Writingitdown · 24/04/2014 10:48

Hello everybody,

I would like to join your group !
A few months ago Breadandwine introduced me on his blog to your thread (s !) here on mumsnet. A big thank you for that ! And ever since I really enjoyed reading here. and found a lot of inspiration, information, support and fun here. And I couldn"t find such a group in Holland where I am from.
My experience with the Fasting diet is a bit going very high up and a little down. The first time of 5:2 I was really enthousiastic. And lost 2 kgs in 5 weeks time. I felt fantastic. But after several weeks my hair was in bad shape Shock and I suffered from insomnia now and then (not always). I stopped in december (how convenient Smile and restarted in january after having regained a couple of pounds. And I started suffering from insomnia again, googled for information about this effect and...read the article on paleo women.
"Ok", I thought,"I am fitting this profile she writes about, so 5:2 is not good for me". (weight 60 kg/9st 6,28lb/ length: 1.64/BMI 22,3)
But I simply cannot believe this fasting is ''bad'' for me. And that's why I have decided to give it another try.
Reading closely all the information here, rereading the book, I have come to the conclusion that:

  • I was not in a positive mindset anymore
  • I ate my green smoothies and fruits on a FD (I am a veggie)
So ! Stick to the protein and vegetables. Is there anyone else here on the thread who suffered (suffers) from insomnia while Fasting ? Any information and tips about this subject are welcome. I am ready to start again. On monday. And will stick to he protein and vegetables on FD's, preparing my menu's, and not completely by myself this time. Hoping to find and give support in your group, that is, indeed, a very friendly bunch !
WeShouldOpenABar · 24/04/2014 10:56

Thanks Hellie , I dont keep track on the other days but thats two weekdays where i stick to the slimming world recipes and I really am not eating enough on the weekends to keep me where I am.

I'm actually beginning to think it might be the coil I had fitted last year. I've done ADF before and lost weight but my body just seems to want to cling on to any extra padding it can right now.

It is very frustrating to think I have no control over this.

EvilHerbivore · 24/04/2014 11:07

God, this is not going well! I just seem to have lost all motivation and direction from the beginning

Hello all - I'm checking in at the end of my 4th FD. It was a hard one! Someone was leaving at work and there were PILES of food everywhere - cakes, crisps, cheese, salami, a BBQ chicken for goodness' sake! I avoided the common area and hid out in my office (eking out my little pot of porridge) but eventually everyone gave me so much stick for not eating anything that I caved and had a little bit. But very little! About 3 crisps, one gummy bear and a small cake. Much, much less than any other day (when I would have just hung about eating all day).

Dinner was a stir fry of cabbage, broccolini and tofu in a chill soy vinegar sauce. We didn't bother weighing anything out and used a small block of tofu that was 78cal per serve - given everything else was vegetables, and the sauces added up to about 25cal, do you reckon that would be ok?

Final question to the experts here - any concerns with 5:2ing when TTC? We will probably start next month.

chica, I'm like you! Have to restrain myself from finishing off my toddler's dinner etc. I only do FDs when I'm at work - not sure how I'd manage an FD at home!

TulipOHare · 24/04/2014 11:50

Morning all. Checking in for my Thursday fast (I am here every day but mostly lurk). Thanks for the replies to my question about calorie-counting; I feel slimmer already so am going to continue playing it by ear until / unless it stops working.

So far today I have had a coffee and a glass of water and am about to go and make myself up a mug of matcha. Have a pheasant in the fridge for dinner and will be off for a brisk walk to the supermarket to buy some greens to go with it Smile

DP has expressed an interest in 5:2 after seeing me do it. He agrees with the principles of it. I'm surprised as I wasn't aware he had any concerns about his weight, but I guess he's the same as me in that he's not overtly overweight, but we've both just sort of spread a bit, got a bit too comfortable, portions a bit too big, snacks a bit too plentiful...anyway I suggested he do a FD with me today but he wants to wait till Monday because apparently Mondays are good days for starting things Grin

Someone mentioned insomnia. I have noticed this a bit, actually, but I don't know how much is 5:2 and how much is just the fact I've been a bit out of whack because it's been the Easter hols - later nights and later getting up than in term time.

Eatriskier · 24/04/2014 12:03

WTAF happened here last night? Barely any posting all day and then as soon as I go to bed (early Blush) you all come out of hiding.

Happy birthday for yesterday tip

Welcome all newbies. Its very nice here, if not busy and very fast paced!

Somehow my scale have dropped again, I've not even done a full fast and have had a lot of chocolate so I'm not sure how but heyho. Both my babes are at nursery all day today - its the first time I've had a full day on my own (even DH is at work which nastily I'm quite grateful for today as I can bimble about with my music on loud without worrying about bothering his work). I've exercised, got the kids ready to leave with DH, showered, styled my hair, baked bread and scrubbed the kitchen and bathroom already today. Off to Nandos for a treat salad in a bit.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/04/2014 12:13

Welcome Chickaboo, Wishes, WritingItDown and any other newbies.
Lovely to see you
Smile
HellieOnTheTelly You look lovely ! Well done, what a fantastic experience for you. I bet his cake wasn't as yum as yours, even if it was a bit fancier.
Flowers
Angie Fast 5 is just an eating window of 5 hours, nothing to do with how much you eat, just when. Personally, I do it daily, so for both FDs and NFDs. You choose which days to try.

Alternatively, you can Fast5 most days just to get the health benefits of fasting without doing 500-cal FDs.
However, to lose weight, you still need the weekly 3000-cal deficit, so that would mean averaging a 430 cal daily deficit.

Reducing my eating window seems to make my waist slimmer, even when the total calories and overall weight don't change.
So, it improves the body composition of a post-meno gym bunny - we need a larger sample size to judge if this works the same for other folk.

Chica Before starting to prepare dinner for anyone else on FDs., I recommend:
. Drink a pint of water
. Thoroughly brush your teeth and swish 30 secs with Listerine

While the food is there, recite a motivating mantra that appeals to you, e.g.
"We have a rubbish bin and I'm NOT that bin"
"Eat rubbish, look rubbish"
"I do NOT steal my DCs / DH's / the dog's food"
.......

Writing - welcome! I wouldn't say 5:2 gives me insomnia exactly but maybe sometimes don't sleep as well ... TBH all I do is try not to get wound up about it, which would only make it worse. (sorry, probably not helpful!). Protein and veg on FDs definitely a sound plan. Smile

Herbivore - wossup?

MamaPo - that dinner sounds great! (interested in the sauce...). Pretty sure people have dropped off this thread because of successful TTC so good luck!

We've got a workman in, boarding the loft and putting in a ladder and I hadn't got my exercise done before he arrived and I just can't do it quietly... so went for a run instead. (with quite a bit of walking as before). Lovely day, two sets of ducklings on the canal, lots of butterflies and birdsong. Smile I'm a bit warm now though! Drank quite a bit before I went and a lot when I got back (water, and some sainsbo's no-sugar lime squash with a dash of PLJ ... that hit the spot), need to get some more.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/04/2014 12:25

Insomnia

From many anecdotal reports, some people may experience sleep disturbance in the first few weeks.
Most people, including IIRC those in the various Varady studies, find sleep return to normal once their bod is used to the WOE.

Reasons it can persist:

. Increased intake of caffeine in coffee, tea, coke etc. So change to herbal tea in say the last 5 hours before bed. Also, for a few weeks, try restricting yourself to 1 cup of coffee at breakfast, then no more.

. Increased intake of water. So, start the morning with a pint of water and keep drinking, but taper off in the last 3 hrs before bed.

. Nothing to do with 5:2, but avoid any electronics (phone, tablet, PC, TV, even a bright alarm clock) for the last hour before bed, as this is becoming a significant cause of insomnia.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 24/04/2014 12:40

OpenAbar, anyone else not losing Several possible reasons:
. hormonal changes
. medications
. longterm dieting slowing metabolism and lowering REAL TDEE
. BUT usually is due to serious over-eating on NFDs.

I recommend for 1 week:
. log EVERYTHING on mfp. All those little nibbles can add up to a mountain.

For 3 weeks:
. Increase exercise, especially HIIT
. Restrict sweets, baked goods, alcohol etc to say one moderate portion on 2 days only per week. Try to cut out sugar from hot drinks. Eat clean.
. Calculate TDEE for sedentary at your GOAL weight, not your current weight
. Aim for this on NFDs and do NOT eat back any exercise cals

OP posts:
MaMaPo · 24/04/2014 12:46

Errol - sauce is about 1 tbsp black vinegar, a little less of light soy and about a teaspoon sugar. Very good with lots of chili and Sichuan pepper.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/04/2014 12:56

I only drink coffee in the morning, and nothing caffeinated after about 5-6pm.

Thanks MaMaPo - I'd not heard of black vinegar, is it like balsamic?

Doris - how about 'actually, I may as well not binge' on that envelope?

MaMaPo · 24/04/2014 13:04

No, it's quite different. Don't use balsamic, that would be awful! You can find it in asian (Chinese) supermarkets, it's also called Chinkiang black vinegar and usually comes in a bottle with a yellow lid. I love it!

AngieM2 · 24/04/2014 13:05

Thanks bigchoc i like the sound of Fast5. writing i dont so much get insomnia but i wake a few times and have very weird dreams on FD.
