The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

Hello people. How are we all doing?

I'm hopeless at knowing who's who anyway, so throw some name changes into the mix and I've given up trying!

Day 3 of being back on the wagon and I've got 1 FD under my belt and 2 successful NFD too (2 meals, no snacking). Shite. I've just realised I'll have to do a FD on Sat Easter Shock and it's Easter weekend too! Ho hum. Never mind.

Weighing myself every day at the mo after The Holiday Gain. Even after a NFD the scales are going down every day. And today I chucked out 2 pairs of size 14 jeans as they are now baggy and unflattering! Was doing a quick mid-week food shop and out of curiosity I tried on a pair of size 12, non-stretch skinny jeans and after a great deal of effort I managed to pull them up and fasten them! My DH urged me to buy them as "You're shrinking everyday anyway!" Bless him.

3 workouts so far this week and hoping to go out for a run tomorrow morning to try out my new trainers. DH bought them for my bday but gave them to me as soon as they arrived as he couldn't wait. I'm a reformed couch potato and still cannot believe I am excited about trying out a pair of trainers!

BigChocFrenzy · 17/04/2014 22:29

Great NSV with size 12, Mazzle, also in looking forward to exercise.
Your DH sounds lovely and supportive
Easter Smile

Better fasting on Saturday than Sunday through Mazzle? Well done on being back on the wagon well and truly! Sounds like you're totally back in the zone. Great work.

I've just got back from a mammoth shop for Easter. We're hosting a barbecue grill indoors because the weather forecast isn't great for both sides of the family, so we'll have 14 round for lunch. I'm planning a feast but starting to feel the pressure. Haven't done anything like this for a long time and it's a bit of a trial run for Christmas next year. At least with christmas you know what you're doing food-wise. With the bbq there's just so much to do. I've a Simnel cake to make tomorrow, as well as prepare as much ahead as I can. Working all day on Saturday as well. So I'll be having a few glasses of vino on Sunday!

Today's been ok. A few chocolate mini egg thingies (did a little pre-easter egg hunt for dd1! Get her in training for Sunday to beat her greedy older cousins) and just having a few pretzels before bed (Penn State Sour cream and chive are just the most yummy flavour ever) and brought the day in about 1400. Yay. Oh, and SV - another lb off this week. Just over 15 ½ now since starting Grin

Bedtime.

Helliecopter · 17/04/2014 22:46

Oh and I'm loving all the grapefruit discussion Smile

I have a few in the fruit bowl now. Love pink/red ones. And I've made a pink grapefruit cake today! Easter Grin

Megrim · 18/04/2014 08:06

Have been Googling again (all stuff backed up with scientific research papers):

Grapefruit contains a flavonoid which appears to programme the liver to burn fat rather than to store it.

Green tea and vinegar (not mixed together!) can help with burning abdominal fat and can help reduce LDL cholesterol.

Cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar and can reduce LDL cholesterol.

Might try starting my NFDs with a grapefruit or glass of juice Hmm

Not2bObvious · 18/04/2014 08:46

Helie 15.5 pounds is brilliant! How long you been following 5:2 now? Over a stone must be really showing in your clothes. Nice one Mazzle on moving down into a 12. I've thrown out nearly all my size 14's, as they looked sh*t, I found it such a novelty to have clothes too big, who knew clothes in the wardrobe came in more than the standard too small categoryGrin I've kept one pair of Zara size 14's, they are one of the few pairs of jeans I have with no Lycra so there isn't an ounce of forgiveness in them. The day they are loose on my thighs is the day I know I'm truly a size 12. I'm going to WI this morning, I don't want to put it off any longer. In the next 30 mins I'll know whether my efforts paid off, argh scared stupid! I know its only one measure, so I'll check my waist too. I was 31.5 a few weeks ago, down from 35.5 a year ago. Maybe I'll get a quarter inch or something. Best go check on the kids, was wokened at 7.15 with a happy Good Friday shouted in my face! Lovely and sunny, think I'll do a run in a bit

TalkinPeace · 18/04/2014 08:50

Marking place after a week away eating too much!
Back on the wagon for me.

MazzleDazzle · 18/04/2014 09:19

Interesting you say that BigChoc. My DH wasn't particularly supportive in the beginning. I've slowly won him round though!

Thank you Hellie and well done you! You'll be at a stone and a half's loss in no time! Hope all goes well for the BBQ. LOL at practising the egg hunting. Quite right though!

I had a terrible experience in Zara Not2, a couple of years ago now. Went in to try a few things on only to realise that nothing fit. It's a popular shop amongst my friends and I felt bloody miserable. I daren't go in again! Maybe I'll brave it after I shift some more pounds! Oh, and I always measure in cms - it's much more rewarding!

Tip it's always good to hear when the old time skinny-malinks over eat, then get back on it! It gives us all encouragement.

Off for a run now with my sister, who is insisting we drive 4 miles before we begin our run Confused. Then a healthy homemade lunch before out for coffee and CAKE, CAKE CAKE!

Not2bObvious · 18/04/2014 09:21

I think I was hovering between 11.8-11.11 the couple of weeks before I put the scales away. I'm now 11.4.6 and my waist is down to 31 inches. I can't lie and say I'm bit disappointed but I know myself it's cause I was in denial about how much I was ruining my efforts with fd's on nfds with alcohol & junk. Fact always remains, you can't get away with what stuffing/guzzling. Back on track and 1 month to go to 5:2 anniversary, so will have to get back on track and away from 11 stone! Have a lovely day y'all

Megrim · 18/04/2014 09:26

C'mon Not2Be - is it good news?

Well done Hellie and Mazzle on SVs and NSVs.

Lovely day here so off for a quick walk before we head away for the weekend. I have had to buy new trousers, my old ones were ready to fall down (which would be a tad mortifying).

Megrim · 18/04/2014 09:28

Cross post - that's around half a stone off Not2B, pretty darn good!

Not2bObvious · 18/04/2014 10:22

Thanks Megrim - I suppose my woe is me is around the fact that I've gained/lost the same half stone for the last 6-8 months. Time to change the pattern, off out for my run - not walk, not jog - RUNGrin

CiderwithBuda · 18/04/2014 10:47

Morning all.

I appear to have gone from 15st 7.5 on Monday to 15 st 2.5 this morning! 5lbs in 5 days! I have been really good food wise other than two slices of garlic bread last night. Had more wine than I should but not too bad. Very happy! Just need to not go mad over the weekend.

Not2B - that's a good result. And it's good to be reminded that we can't go overboard on NFDs. It's hard to do though. And it's hard to find a balance of foods that don't trigger binges in some people. And a balance of FDs too. I did three a couple of weeks ago and it def triggered something in me and I felt very out of control for a week after.

Happy Good Friday everyone. Lovely day here. Contemplating walking into town for some hot cross buns.

Miffytastic · 18/04/2014 11:33

Hello all, I weighed in after FD yesterday and had stayed the same, well actually 1/4lb up but I'm not going to get that pernickety....

I have decided to do 16:8 for the next week to keep the snacking and stuff at bay whilst away on holiday. Just had late breakfast of porridge with toasted flaked almonds a mix of date and goldensyrup (not loads!) YUM

Miffytastic · 18/04/2014 11:33

Cider that's ace!!

Eatriskier · 18/04/2014 11:34

It's one year today (well tomorrow, but I started fasting on a Friday and shifted pattern so have completed this week) since I started 5:2. Its been fab. Whilst I never really tried much else diet wise before, this has been so easy. Its changed my life totally from the obvious weight loss through to better pain and life management through again to improving my diet and exercise completely. And its been relatively painless. Maintaining has been a doodle, the confidence in knowing I have the tools to lose should I put a bit on is phenomenal. I shall celebrate tonight with a lovely pink rioja, and this afternoon with some hot cross buns!

Eatriskier · 18/04/2014 11:34

cider I often find I lose after a bit too much wine. I reckon it cleans the system Wink

postmanpatscat · 18/04/2014 11:54

Congrats not2b cider and hellie on your achievements.

Yesterday was my first fast day in a long while and I'm down 0.7kg this morning, so about 1.4kg away from where I prefer to hover. I love how easy it is to get back into 5:2 when a few pounds have crept on.

Congrats too on your one year anniversary eat - I completely agree that 5:2 is brill (I started in Feb 2013 and have found the same re maintaining).

CiderwithBuda · 18/04/2014 12:13

Thanks Miffy. I'm chuffed but I think it's a bit of a false result in a way as the higher number was after a week away where I ate loads of bread. Stop eating bread and whoosh!

Your breakfast sounds yum! I had a green smoothie again.

Miffytastic · 18/04/2014 12:27

Ah take it anyway Cider! I'm going off my highest number when I moved my scales to their current position on the stone floor downstairs.

ErrolTheDragonsEgg · 18/04/2014 12:28

Morning all - weight static (I think, I'd had 3 large mugs of tea before I got round to weighing). Post-FD unhungriness... just about starting to fancy lunch.

What I actually feel like is a grapefruit, can't think why Wink... would it be mean of me to get some when DH likes them but can't have them? Hm, maybe grapefruit with cinnamon accompanied by green tea... Grin.

vieenrose · 18/04/2014 13:06

Hello everyone
Just popping in after weeks of being awol.
I'm very busy preparing for our move to Hong Kong plus juggling work and children like many of you on this thread. Plus DP and I have decided to get married after 14 years and 2 children together and that involves quite some organising too.
On the 5:2 front, I've been hovering since November between 56 and 58 kilos (8.11 and 9.1) which is pretty much where I want to be.
For all the newcomers, I've been doing this since Jan 2013, I have stopped during each holidays, I enjoy lots of good food and wine at the weekends, and I still managed to loose between 16 and 18 kilos.
Keep on the good work everyone !

MetellaEstMater · 18/04/2014 13:08

Funny reading about too much wine. I went to see Elbow at the O2 on Wednesday night and went a bit a lot heavy on the booze. Fasted yesterday and hey presto 5.5lbs off this week, my best loss to date. Felt like hell in the gym this morning though - still hungover two days later! Not good.

Looking forward to the long weekend. Friends over for a barbecue tonight. How times have changed. Not a burger bun in sight. Kettle chips banished. But a huge salad, steak and prawn kebabs to enjoy.

We will have a mini splurge on Sunday though. I may even but myself an egg.

Hope you all have a super few days. Happy Easter!

MetellaEstMater · 18/04/2014 13:11

Oh and I'm another one who has a DH who can't eat grapefruits. He has meds for an arthritic condition at the grand old age of 34. He's very sporty and apparently years of not warming up, stretching etc can bring the condition on Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 18/04/2014 13:30

Megrim I've read many such papers, plus others stating the effects are not measurable. We know junk food buggers up the metabolism, so clearly some foods are better than others.

Any substance that was proved to burn significantly more calories than it contained would be shouted from the rooftops.
However, substituting them for other higher calorie foods must assist weight loss.
Grapefruit for breakfast, plus maybe a "green drink", sounds very good.

For several years, I've consumed cinnamon , green tea, veg juice with vinegar. I judge these substances to be slightly beneficial longterm to the metabolism, but I personally can't measure any weight loss benefit.

I also take: grapefruit enzymes, fish oil, CLA, grape-seed, olive-leaf plus several other supplements for health.
Some scientists in nutrition/ aging / disease fields supplement like mad; others don't. No consensus.
