The continuing thread for those of us following the 5:2 fast or other forms of fasting such as 4:3, ADF, or daily 16:8

The 5:2 diet was featured on Horizon in August 2012 and essentially requires you to fast for 2 non-consecutive days per week. The other 5 days, you can eat normally - or approximately your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE - see explanation below). 4:3 is the same except you fast on 3 days in the week. Alternate-day fasting (ADF) is just how it sounds; you fast every other day. 16:8 is another form where you stick to only eating in an 8 hour window each day, therefore fasting for 16 hours each day.

By "fasting", we mean that we keep our calorie consumption very low; around 500 calories on average for a woman, 600 for a man, on those days.

You'll find on these threads we use a number of acronyms. If you're new to the threads, or Mumsnet in general, they might not make much sense.

WOE/WOL = Way Of Eating/Way Of Life. We use this term instead of "diet" as many of us see this as something to do in the long term.

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a website or app many use for keeping track of the number of calories they're eating.

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, quantifies the number of calories you burn in a day. This measure is best estimated by scaling your Basal Metabolic Rate to your level of activity. TDEE is critical in tailoring your nutrition plan to desired fitness goals. Here is a link to a TDEE calculator to help you figure out how many calories you should be eating in a day.

NFD = Non fast day

NSV/LSV = Non scale victory/Lifestyle (change) victory

Other links
This is a BBC article regarding Michael Mosley's findings, which was featured on Horizon - link to that programme here.

This Telegraph article comments on the diet and gives a brief overview by Dr Mosley himself, very informative if you're just starting.

This blog post gives some of the scientific explanation for why this way of eating helps you to not only lose weight, but improve your all-around health.

This link nicely demonstrates that there are many body ‘right’ body shapes and types, because what we are actually aiming for is low body fat for fitness and health.

A study discussed here gives commentary specifically addressing the effect of this diet on obese people (both men and women), with regard to both health and weight loss. ("After 8 weeks of treatment, participants had an average 12.5 lbs reduction in body weight and a 4cm decrease in waist circumference. Total fat mass declined by about 12 lbs while lean body mass remained relatively constant. It also mentions "Plasma adiponectin, a protein hormone that is elevated in obesity and associated with heart disease, dropped by 30%. As did LDL cholesterol (25%) and triglycerides (32%).")

If you’ve been researching IF you may have come across this article which is highly negative about women with BMI in the normal range. Here’s our response to that:

  • With a healthy BMI, those who want to be leaner will usually find weight and waist loss to be much slower than for overweight folk, since, less fat and inches are available to lose.
  • The women with healthy BMIs already had healthier blood sugar than the men in the study. Hence nothing really needed improving.
  • Women who have had health problems on IF were NOT doing 5:2, but the
much tougher ADF or 16:8, ^combined with heavy lifting (often multiples of body weight) AND were often starting from already ultra-low BF 12-16% range.^ -Many were already missing periods or had EDs before IF, due to the low BF %, over-training and over-stressing.

5:2 is a gentler form of IF than ADF or Leangains and there’s plenty of anecdotal evidence from longterm 5:2ers, now with healthy BMI, who are continuing to have very positive results and experiences on this WOE.

A BIG THANK YOU to all who have been contributing. Most of us are learning this way of eating as we go along. All of the links above have been posted by others in our previous threads, and they've been very helpful.

A HUGE THANK YOU to Greeneggsandnicht for putting together all this info and resources into one concise OP text, much appreciated by so many 5:2ers!

Come join us, and tell us about your experiences with this way of life!

And lastly, a few FAQs/Healthy tips :

  • WATER: Start each day with a pint of water; and drink plenty during the day.
  • Hot drinks: No limits on tea or coffee any day, just note any milk / sugar calories on FDs.
  • FDs: Concentrate on protein & veg; avoid / reduce starchy carbs & sugar, including juice. Soups & stews are good; ready meals are fine. Old hands skip breakfast & save most cals for supper.
  • NFDs: No rules, but to improve health, try to cut down on added sugar, artificial sweeteners, fizzy drinks, junk food. A few treats per week are good though! Aim to average TDEE over NFDs each week, but you may under-eat by say 20% on 3 NFDs to save calories for weekend.
  • CLENCH for health: Men & women should exercise pelvic floor daily.
  • Do NOT fast: if pregnant, under 21, have EDs, any illness, even a bad cold. When ill, your body usually needs more nutrients and less stress. So don't force yourself to eat, but if hungry then eat nutritious food to TDEE & cut out junk, added sugar, fizzy drinks.
  • Check with your Doctor : if you have diabetes, any other endocrine condition, or if taking ANY prescribed medication (fasting may affect absorption rate)
  • BFers: start with 1000-cal FDs; optionally, reduce to 700 cals gradually. You can return to 1000 if growth spurts or sleep-deprivation require more fuel.
  • SLEEP: Everybody needs enough sleep, or it may slow weight loss.
  • EXERCISE: is healthy & can help weight loss if you do NOT eat back exercise calories. Fasted training can burn more fat. HIIT works well with 5:2/IF.

mamapo Welcome :) I know people who happily do this WOE easting breakfast so as long as it doesn't wake up the hunger monster in you then it is perfectly possible! Structured work days are definitely easier - I'm struggling to do my usual fasts while on Easter break.

Welcome back Lucy! Brilliant that you've been able to maintain without the fasting - you've properly re-trained your eating habits, excellent, well done. Did you miss the fasting at all or is it more a slog in your mind? I miss them when I don't get to do them, though it always feels like it's going to be difficult getting back into it, though usually it's fine.

BetsyBell · 13/04/2014 20:26

Evilherbivore We LOVE talking baking/cooking/recipes here! We all get to be foodies and lose weight - it's why this WOE is AWESOME Grin

Not2 That is EXACTLY what I've been doing, in the sunshine!

Bigchoc A skinny mini who can do really good proper big girl press ups now too Grin

Darkhorsefor1 · 13/04/2014 20:46

I struggle with non work fasts! Second raskova's first FD advice. Tried writing somethin similar before but it rapidly turned into incomprehensible drivel. Got my mum's rambling gene. Why use one word when you can use two hundred?

Evilherbivore that baking fest sounds amazing! I think that choc n beetroot cake needs to be shared if you would be so kind.

betsy that is a lovely nsv, bet you're glad you never changed it. Pretty little fingers can't be beat, very inspiring.

eats Yum. Thats all.

EvilHerbivore · 13/04/2014 21:05

darkhorse its the nigella one, on my phone so can't do a clicky link but this one - www.nigella.com/recipes/view/beetrootchocolate-cake-1273

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 13/04/2014 21:17

Darkhorse I struggle with non work fasts too! So much so I am thinking I might switch Easter Monday's FD to the Tuesday Smile

ErrolTheDragon · 13/04/2014 21:47

Evening all.

Mamapo, in addition to the other tips, I'd add, if you usually have caffeinated drinks do still have them on FDs - but with additional water/herbals to make up for the fluid that otherwise you'd get from food.

I didn't ache at all after my mega weeding session yesterday, and today did the front and a bit of planting. Managed proper sized bags of compost too, I used to have difficulty with anything over 40l.

MrsFlorrick · 13/04/2014 23:48

Evening. Back again after password debacle.

I survived the play date! Yay! No one needed the hospital and none of the children squabbled or cried. Grin And the all had FUN Grin

DS was so happy to see his friend. It's only the second "proper" invitee he has had that he has asked for. So a big deal for a small man. We also bought furniture for DS today. Proper big boy furniture as he is too big for the Mamas & Papas Golden Oak toddler day bed. He was very pleased.
DD wanted to save up pocket money to buy herself a new bed and wardrobe. We had to inform her that it would take her 19 years to save up for what she wanted with her £1 pocket money. Poor DD she was grief stricken.

The play date fruit, crisps and Haribo worked well. I was careful not to store any of the stuff in my food cupboard where the nuts live.

The nut allergy child was picked up by her mum who said "oh I was a bit worried because we forgot to give you her epipen". Aaaaaaahhhhh. That did send me rocking in the corner. Confused What were they thinking!!

That said I have no idea what to do with one if I had one. Confused

Oh well next time google epipen administering in advance, remind parents of epipen and make sure play date is only arranged for when my next door neighbour is at home (cardiac consultant).

Had a fairly monstrous scoffing frenzy Saturday night. Within TDEE today. FD tomorrow.

Planning to take DC to some sort of museum tomorrow.

Raskova · 14/04/2014 07:07

Dark horse, my mums the works biggest rambler. I'm pretty bad but learning Grin

Woke up starving. Think because I didn't have any tea last night. Just demolished a chicken baguette. With only an apple and banana to last me the rest of the day Hmm in all honesty, I'm probably gonna eat those now Shock

lucyintheskywithdinos · 14/04/2014 07:28

betsy I ended up fasting 'naturally'! I do 16:8 every day without thinking about it now, no longer snack and I (without thinking about it) tend to have one or two days a week where I only eat once!

FD here today and I have a big meeting at 6 tonight, won't get home until about 1am as the meeting is a 4 hour train journey away!

Not sure how to play the FD, I think I may take my meal with me, eat on the train on the way there and mainline americanos to keep me awake as I have to walk across Manchester at 11pm.

mamapo good luck for today!

Off to do half an hour of yoga now, then spend most of today 'revising'!

magicalrealistmum · 14/04/2014 07:49

Morning all
Starting today with aim to loose 20lb and improve health after recent scare. Late 40s so my body has changed and it seems much harder to shift.
Will read the thread and hope to have success with all the support and shared info. Intermittent poster - but I will aim for regular check ins and MFP daily
DizziD on MFP and I would love to have some 5:2 friend
Looking forward to it!
X

Helliecopter · 14/04/2014 09:13

Morning all!
Successfully negotiated the password change. Phew.

Mrs F VERY well done on your successful play date and not killing any children! Hurrah! Wink
Betsy Excellent NSVs there. I long for the day I can do a proper press up. I have arms made of actual jelly.

Not at all sure how this weekend has gone food-wise. I've kept track on MFP but I've not really felt in control and I'm not sure why. I've generally been around TDEE, even if I include the things I have pretended I haven't eaten but I think I've been quite upset/emotional this weekend and that's probably added to my negative state of mind.

FD today and I'm actually quite glad about it! Grin
Planning a family BBQ for Easter/my mum's birthday. Got to think about the food and drinks for 14 of us...quite looking forward to it but I must remember not to go crazy. Our family motto is "never knowingly under-catered"!

Good luck everyone else fasting today. I've got to that stage where I am not worried at all about how I'll manage on a FD and it just happens. Brilliant!

Sendintheshiraz · 14/04/2014 09:14

Right hi all, been away from thread as I'm lazy and only just reset my password....

So weighed myself both at the gym on sat after Zumba, and at home this morning and I can proudly confirm I am 4lbs down after my first week on 5:2

Mega proud!!

I don't think I ate anywhere near my TDEE on NFDs during the week, but sure I did over the weekend with the help of my beloved Wine

I have noticed what a carb fiend I must have been, particularly bread, and so made a conscious effort to avoid it on NFDs, and over the course of the week only had it twice (baguette for lunch on fri and whole meal bacon Sarnie on sat) whereas before I would quite happily have something bread based for both breakfast & lunch and think nothing of it. So I think for me, this has helped.

I love the fact that I was able to have a relatively normal week and not feel permanently deprived, and still lose weight.

Experienced posters, what can I expect to lose now, is a pound a week realistic? That'd be fab as off for hols on 12th May and if I could be half a stone down if be thrilled..

Welcome Magical and good luck today, will happily be your buddy on MFP but how you add friends completely illudes me?!?

FD here and feeling a bit meh but on the herbal tea :-D

Helliecopter · 14/04/2014 09:14

welcome Magicalrealist - I'm on MFP as well, so please feel free to add me. I'm sure you can kick that 20lbs.

Helliecopter · 14/04/2014 09:16

Shiraz 4lbs!!! YAY!
Also just had my first cup of herbal tea. Will get through gallons by the end of the day!

tiggermummy70 · 14/04/2014 09:53

Morning everyone, attempting a FD today...
long weekend late nights (worked a duty sat not partying )
DH & Kids off to my Dad's today, joining them Wednesday.

two child free days and I have loads to do sigh.......

BigChocFrenzy · 14/04/2014 09:59

Welcome Magical . I'm sorry to hear about your health scare, but I'm sure 5:2 can help you lose weight.

Some of us here in our 40s & 50s find around menopause we may lose more slowly than other folk, but that would hold for any weight loss WOE.

5:2/IF worked better than conventional daily calorie restriction for many of us, like a reset button.

Well done on your SV, Shiraz, great start !
Smile
The average weight loss is 1lb per week.
Folk who are already within healthy BMI tend to lose more slowly (ntbo: less body fat available to lose) as do middle-aged women, or those with PCOS, thyroid issues etc.
Some folk lose quite quickly.

I agree BigChoc! I wish I had indulged in some debauchery though...
Tiredness has really derailed me over the last few days. I have a baby that does not sleep, usually I cope ok but every so often it catches up with me. Have eaten too much cake so going to do three FD this week.

Attempting one today but have come down with a cold and am STARVING which I NEVER am at this time on a fd. Will just see how it goes and not push myself, if I can't cope I will do 1000 cal day.

EvilHerbivore · 14/04/2014 10:11

Left the baby for approximately 3.5 seconds with no nappy on while i nipped next door to get some clothes ( live in a flat so just the room next door, didn't even need to go upstairs) and came back to find the baby/DS1s beloved cow toy/the carpet/the fireplace/the bookcase etc all absolutely covered in poo!

Absolutely smeared everywhere! Baby picked up at arms length and dunked in the bath and I'm scrubbing the floor now...anyone else keeping a tally for revenge for when their children grow up?!
DS1s include breaking his expensive, less-than-24-hours old gadget (pushed over the TV and smashed the screen the same evening we bought it!) and waking him up at 4am every morning asking "is it Christmas yet?!" in October! Am only sort of joking BTW!

And its a FD!

Degustibusnonestdisputandem · 14/04/2014 10:16

Wow Sendintheshiraz 4lbs is excellent!

I'm signing in for FD today, Smile definitely not going to do any FDs over Easter!

HumphreyCobbler · 14/04/2014 10:20

EvilHerbivore - you have my utmost sympathy! What a pain.
